PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Rex Ruger (ranked 1526 p4p, 61 weight class) and Dan Sergeant (ranked 1987 p4p, 90 weight class). Dan Sergeant will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 17 - 10 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Rex Ruger!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 20 - 16 - 1, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Dan Sergeant!
The judges for this bout are Edson Gomes, Paulo Santos and Emerson Jorge.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
The crowd cheers as Sergeant lands an impressive looking overhand right. Ruger doesn't seem phased though.

Ruger shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Sergeant holds on and takes a little breather.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Sergeant can do anything to dispel that myth.

The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Ruger got a little sloppy there for a moment and Sergeant has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Ruger has managed to get both his arms back between Sergeant's legs - danger averted.

Ruger lands with an elbow from half guard - that looked like it hurt.

Sergeant makes some distance and scrambles quickly back to his feet. Nice work!
Ruger shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Sergeant but Sergeant pushes him off and we're back to square one.
And Sergeant tries to counter it with a takedown but Ruger pushes his down on his head and steps out.

Ruger fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Sergeant to the ground. Ruger is now in Sergeant's guard.

Sergeant manages to wriggle out and sneak his way back up to his feet, so the fighters are now clinched up against the cage.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Ruger wants to take the fight to the mat but Sergeant manages to get underhooks and keep the fight in the clinch.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Rex Ruger dominated that round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.



Ruger shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Ruger showed some decent athleticism there.

Sergeant is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Ruger's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Ruger's back!

Sergeant can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Ruger is looking to escape.

Sergeant has control of Ruger's right arm, working for a kimura. It's a bit of a token attempt though and Ruger regains control of the situation pretty easily.

Sergeant takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.

Dan Sergeant showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! The crowd applaud as we get ready to start the final round!

Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

Ruger throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Sergeant was covering up waiting for the punch and Ruger finishes the takedown easily into guard.
