PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Elgin Turner (ranked 864 p4p, 108 weight class) and Tom McGettigan (ranked 2044 p4p, 220 weight class). Turner comes to the cage accompanied by Wu-Tang Clan - Da Mystery Of Chessboxin'. Tom McGettigan told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 13 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Elgin Turner!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 14 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Tom McGettigan!
The judges for this bout are Anni Minnemäki, Matti Vanhoillinen and Marco Blurström.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Turner swings wildly with a hook that is half blocked by McGettigan.

Turner manages to get an easy takedown there - catching McGettigan on his heels. He'll look to pass McGettigan's guard now, I'm sure.

McGettigan is edging up against the cage. He's using the cage to get back to his feet. Nice work there - the fighters are clinched.
Turner goes for a body shot but it's blocked.
Turner tried to land a shot to the body but connects with McGettigan's elbow.
Turner throws a blind hook that connects with the side of McGettigans head.
Turner lands with a right to the head.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
McGettigan misses with the head strike.
McGettigan lands a hook to the side of the head.
Turner lands a left hand that snaps the head of McGettigan backwards.
McGettigan swings wildly with an uppercut but Turner uses good head movement to avoid it.

Turner tried to land a shot to the body but connects with McGettigan's elbow.

Turner is keeping good posture, landing some ground and pound.
Turner looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if McGettigan can do anything to dispel that myth.

Turner has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Turner throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.
Turner is taking a breather. McGettigan says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.
McGettigan really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Turner. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.

Turner seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but McGettigan does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

Turner wants to control but McGettigan is keeping him busy.

McGettigan is trying desperately to improve position.
Turner throwing strikes here but McGettigan is writhing around nicely and avoiding any serious damage.

The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!


Turner throws out a token jab with nothing on it.
McGettigan takes a jab on the nose. He smiles like he loves it and keeps coming.
Turner uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by McGettigan.
The fighters circling - Turner throws out the jab but it was never going to land.
Turner fakes a head shot and lands one to the body.
McGettigan tries to clinch but Turner moves out of range.
McGettigan with poor footwork there. He got himself in a bit of a tangle, enabling Turner to score with a decent uppercut.
Turner lands with a thumping leg kick.
McGettigan's hands are dropping dangerously low here and Turner connects clean with a right hook that sends him down to one knee! McGettigan scrambles back to his feet.
McGettigan ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Turner moves away.
Turner throws a shot from downtown. McGettigan moves away and avoids it.
McGettigan fails with an attempt to clinch.
Turner appears to be looking for a counter takedown.
Turner misses with an uppercut. McGettigan saw that one coming.
Turner sets himself, and McGettigan steps forward looking for the clinch! Turner avoids it this time.
McGettigan walks straight into an uppercut. Luckily it didn't land flush.
McGettigan moves in looking to clinch but Turner pushes him off.
McGettigan takes an uppercut right on the jaw but it doesn't phase him.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
McGettigan clobbers Turner with an overhand right that has the crowd gasping. That made a horrendous noise.
McGettigan is looking to clinch.
Turner lands a straight punch to the body, keeping McGettigan at a distance.

Elgin Turner is winning the standup battle so far.
McGettigan is looking to clinch but Turner is avoiding it.
Turner keeps the fight on the outside.
Turner shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has McGettigan pinned against the cage. McGettigan gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.

Turner closes the distance and after a bit of a stuggle, scores a takedown into McGettigan's guard.

Turner takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.
Turner sends his fist crashing into the mat - the crowd let out a collective ooooooh. Let's hope he's not broken it!

Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin! So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.


A nice leg kick lands there from Turner.
Turner uses decent footwork to sidestep a right hand from McGettigan.
Turner shuffles to his left behind two crisp jabs. McGettigan eats them both and turns towards Turner to reposition himself and eats a stinging right hand-left hook combo.
McGettigan is looking to clinch.
Turner half commits to a counter takedown before pushing away, out of range.
McGettigan throws a hard body shot but it just misses.

Turner feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

McGettigan takes a big shot right to the temple there but he's taken it well.

McGettigan is in a horrible position here, under a barrage of strikes, he's managing to avoid any damage.
Turner is landing with some decent strikes but McGettigan is trying to advance his position so the referee is letting the fight continue.
Tom McGettigan has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Elgin Turner is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
Elgin Turner overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Turner has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.

Turner's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.

Well Turner has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.

Elgin Turner spent the whole post fight interview bigging himself up. It didn't go down that well with the fans after a while as they thought it was a bit arrogant.
