The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Mendozagonzalez avoids the head kick by James.

James throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Mendozagonzalez tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. James is in Mendozagonzalez's guard.
James missing there with some ground and pound from the guard.
James tries to stand but Mendozagonzalez is controlling from the bottom.
James is looking to work some ground and pound but Mendozagonzalez has wrist control.
James really is a fat lump.
Mendozagonzalez looks winded!
James engaging in some classic timewasting tactics.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
James wants to control from the top but Mendozagonzalez keeps moving.

James thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.

The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up.

James is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
Mendozagonzalez fails to land the takedown.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.

Mendozagonzalez gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows James to score an easy takedown into full guard.
Mendozagonzalez is looking to stand back up but James counters by passing into half guard. Oops... bit sloppy there by Mendozagonzalez.

Mendozagonzalez takes a big shot right to the temple there but he's taken it well.

Mendozagonzalez seems a little lost for a moment, as James dominates the positioning.

James decides to take the fight back to the feet.

James shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Mendozagonzalez napping and manages to drive through into side control!
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
James lands a nice forearm strike.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

James tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.
A lull in the action here.

James stands up.
James lands with a thumping leg kick.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
James defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Mendozagonzalez.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Erich James dominated that round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.


A slapping leg kick lands for James.
Mendozagonzalez fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
James is looking to counter with head kicks.

Mendozagonzalez moves into the clinch.

James has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Mendozagonzalez uses from the top position.

James is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Mendozagonzalez defends well.

James is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Mendozagonzalez is aware though and is defending well.
Mendozagonzalez really doesn't want to stay on the ground with James. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Mendozagonzalez is posturing up here but James has hold of an arm and he's gone for an armbar! Mendozagonzalez tries to roll out but it's too tight and Mendozagonzalez has to tap! Slick submission there by James!
