PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Boyd Clark (ranked 2361 p4p, 269 weight class) and Al Swearengen (ranked 3333 p4p, 356 weight class). Al Swearengen told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 8 - 15 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Boyd Clark!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 5 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Al Swearengen!
The judges for this bout are Jack Bonds, Frank Antenori and Don Winkell.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Swearengen decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.

Clark manages to escape and get back to his feet!
Swearengen dodges the punch combination from Clark.
Clark fails to land with a series of punches.

and Clark counters with a two punch combo.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Clark stalks Swearengen and leaps in with a furious combination of punches. Uppercuts and crosses smash into Swearengen's face. Swearengen staggers backwards, shaken.


It looks like Al Swearengen has been cut.
A head kick misses from Clark.

Swearengen closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.

Swearengen looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything.
Clark tries to bench press Swearengen off him but Swearengen keeps the position.
Swearengen throws a strike aimed at the side of Clark's head but Clark avoids it well.
Swearengen is looking to take a break and control but Clark is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Clark regains half guard.

Clark is trying to get back to full guard.
Swearengen throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.
Clark is looking for a sweep. Swearengen is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Swearengen is figuring out what he wants to do next.

Clark makes his way to full guard, as Swearengen worked for a kimura.
Swearengen pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Clark is keeping the position for now.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Clark not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Swearengen stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Clark swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Clark keeping moving, preventing Swearengen from controlling successfully.
We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.
Clark tries to land a sweep but no joy.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
Swearengen shoots in but no luck this time.
Swearengen shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Clark sprawls well. Clark wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Swearengen gets slowly back to his feet.
Boyd Clark has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Al Swearengen.

Swearengen shoots in but Clark avoids the takedown attempt easily.

Clark forces Swearengen back against the cage and clinches.
The fighters are starting to get sweaty, which will make takedowns a bit more tricky.
Swearengen wants to take the fight to the mat but Clark manages to get underhooks and keep the fight in the clinch.
Clark struggles to land a body shot inside as Swearengen controls his hands.
Still in the clinch, Clark scores with a nice short uppercut.
Clark tries to land a knee to the head but Swearengen blocks with his arms.

Clark is refusing to be controlled, as Swearengen sits in half guard.
Swearengen tries to pass to full mount but Clark defends it.

Swearengen thows a huge punch but Clark dodges it nicely.

Swearengen is trying to work for a kimura but Clark is defending well.
Clark gets back to full guard.
Clark bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Swearengen's guard.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Swearengen is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.

Swearengen has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Clark can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Swearengen shoots in and drives through. Clark sprawls well.

Swearengen shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Clark's guard.
Clark is wriggling around but Swearengen manages to pass to half guard.

Clark tries to get to full guard but Swearengen has control of the leg.
Clark is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Swearengen can do to turn this around?
Swearengen stops Clark from getting back to his feet.
Swearengen is trying to advance to mount but he's lost his balance and Clark reverses the position - he's now on top in Swearengen's guard.

Swearengen is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Clark defends well.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Swearengen gets one leg under and gets the fight to half guard.

Swearengen felt the need to train up his defensive grappling in the buildup to the fight. Presumably he was expecting to be in a difficult position like this, so let's see if he can get out of it.

Clark seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Swearengen does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Swearengen doesn't succeed with the takedown
and Clark counters with a nice low kick that buckles Swearengen's knee momentarily.

Swearengen changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Clark looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.
Clark manages to work his way to half guard, despite Swearengen's best efforts.

Swearengen looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
Swearengen is breathing heavily.
Swearengen wants to pass the guard but Clark is defending well.
We've been hearing good reports from Clark's training camp. Apparently he has been rolling around with some good quality BJJ practitioners and has been sharpening his skills. Let's see if that has an impact on the fight today.

Swearengen uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Clark.

Swearengen is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! Clark is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! Clark has escaped and now he's on top!


Swearengen has his foot on Clark's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Clark works his way back into a safe position though.

Swearengen takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Swearengen is active off his back here, looking for submissions.

Swearengen escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Clark gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Clark's corner is telling him to maintain position.
Clark advances to half guard.
Clark content to sit in half guard and control for a moment.
Clark is trying to control the action in half guard but Swearengen is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.
Al Swearengen has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

Swearengen is looking to improve his position.
Boyd Clark overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Clark keeping composed on the top, looking to control the action.
We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.
Clark wants to lay and pray for a moment but Swearengen keeps working.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Clark throws a right high kick that is partially blocked by Swearengen.

Swearengen feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
Clark is adopting a defensive guard.
Clark lands a beautiful sweep and he's now moved into his opponent's guard.

Well Clark has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.

Boyd Clark decided to go for the less than humble approach in his post fight interview, telling everyone how he is going to conquer the world. The crowd seemed to like it when really that sort of approach could have gone either way.
In defeat, Al Swearengen stepped up to the mic, saying 'Pussy got lucky'.
