PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Denis Patrick (ranked 23741 p4p, 0 weight class) and Shingoke Shoryu (ranked 7027 p4p, 0 weight class). The crowd seem to be enjoying Shoryu's choice of entrance music: Soothsayer. Shingoke Shoryu will no doubt be looking to use his reach advantage to good effect.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Denis Patrick!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Shingoke Shoryu!
The judges for this bout are Roosa Järviläinen, Johanna Lukiainen and Marco Blurström.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Shoryu closes the distance and pushes Patrick back into the cage.
Patrick tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Shoryu smiles and moves away.
Patrick looks for a takedown but Shoryu sprawls well.
Shoryu is trying to avoid his opponent's strikes and get into the clinch.

Patrick clinches up against the cage.

Shoryu has dropped down and is working for a takedown. Patrick is trying to keep an underhook but Shoryu manages to get the takedown into half guard.
Patrick tries to roll over but Shoryu keeps him under control.
Patrick is looking to escape.
Patrick is looking for a sweep. Shoryu is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Shoryu stands up from half guard... He's had enough of that ground malarky for the time being.

Patrick closes the distance and clinches.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Patrick lands with a left to the head.
Patrick tries to pull guard but Shoryu won't allow it.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Denis Patrick. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Patrick is trying to pull guard but Shoryu turns him against the cage and we stay in the clinch.

Patrick breaks the clinch.

Shoryu drives through with a takedown into Patrick's guard. Let's see what he can do from the top position.
Patrick is wriggling around but Shoryu manages to pass to half guard.

Patrick tries to regain full guard. Instead though, Shoryu has advanced to mount. Uh oh.

Shoryu misses with a series of strikes from mount. He'll no doubt be working on his ground and pound when he gets back to the gym.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Patrick avoids a series of strikes thrown by Shoryu.
Shoryu can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Patrick is looking to escape.
Patrick could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.
Patrick keeping his composure momentarily, calmly looking to get back to half guard.
Patrick trying desperately to get to his feet.
Patrick is squirming around, avoiding Shoryu's attempts to control the action.
Shoryu is stalling here but it's allowed Patrick to get half guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Patrick is trying to maintain the position but Shoryu is very close to passing his half guard.
Shoryu trying to mount his opponent but Patrick defends it.
The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Shoryu connects with a nice short shot to Patrick's temple.
Patrick knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Shoryu on the ground.
Shoryu is looking to take a break and control but Patrick is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Patrick wants to improve his position but Shoryu is controlling well.
Shoryu content to control rather than advance.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

Patrick pushes Shoryu off and gets back to his feet.
No joy there for Shoryu, who threw a few shots but didn't land.

Patrick closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Shoryu to the mat! Shoryu manages to get full guard.
Patrick controlling from the top position.
Shoryu not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Shoryu wants to stand and escape but Patrick is having none of it.
Shoryu is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Shingoke Shoryu will probably get the nod.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!



Shoryu looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into side control! Oh, that's bad for Patrick!
Patrick struggling a bit here.
We've been informed that Shoryu has been working hard on his conditioning in the buildup to the fight.
Patrick is trying to get back to his feet.
Shoryu wants to control but Patrick is keeping him busy.
Patrick manages to get one leg in to regain half guard.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Patrick is looking to improve his position.

Shoryu stands, ready to strike. The ref makes him back up and allows Patrick to get to his feet.
Patrick really is built like a bowling ball. I wonder if he'd roll if you pushed him down a hill...

Shoryu gets caught flat footed, as Patrick shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.
Shoryu wants to get back to his feet but Patrick passes into half guard.

Shoryu has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Patrick is working away from the top position though.
Patrick is taking a breather. Shoryu says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.
Patrick working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that.

Patrick tries to stand but can't do so whilst Shoryu controls his leg.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Shoryu is trying to maintain the position but Patrick is very close to passing his half guard.

Patrick is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.

Patrick seems to be looking for submissions.
Shoryu wants to get back to full guard.
Shoryu trying to control but Patrick postures up.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Patrick sitting in half guard, looking to land shots. Shoryu defending well though.
Shoryu is not content to let Patrick control the position.
Patrick not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

Shoryu decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.

Patrick kicks Shoryu off and gets back to his feet.

Shoryu shoots in and scores a nice double leg takedown into half guard.

Patrick has one foot on Shoryu's thigh - he pushes off and manages to get back to his feet.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Patrick looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Shoryu is fending him off so far but Patrick persists. Nope, Shoryu circles away and we're back to standing.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
A shot to the liver by Shoryu. Beautiful body shot.

Shoryu has closed the distance and engaged Patrick in a clinch.
Patrick prevents a body shot from Shoryu.
Patrick is trying to push Shoryu away but Shoryu has him pressed against the cage, so he's going nowhere.
Patrick tries to pull guard but Shoryu forces him back to his feet, against the cage.

Patrick jumps guard and drags Shoryu to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Patrick looking to hit a scissor sweep but Shoryu is one step ahead there.
Patrick keeping moving, preventing Shoryu from controlling successfully.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Denis Patrick dominated that second round.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! And we move into the final round!


Patrick gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily
and Shoryu counters with a stiff right hand.
Shoryu scores with a nice body kick.
Shoryu throws a head kick but Patrick moves out of range.

Shoryu scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice.
Patrick tries to escape but Shoryu is in control.
Patrick tries to buck Shoryu off but Shoryu is having none of it.
Shoryu wants to lay and pray for a moment but Patrick keeps working.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Shoryu tries to move into full mount but can't pass Patrick's legs.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Patrick wants to control but Shoryu postures up.
Patrick keeping his opponent close.
Patrick is not content to let Shoryu control the position.
The ground and pound from Shoryu seems to be hitting the mat more than his opponent.
Shoryu trying to control the action but Patrick is working from the bottom.

Shoryu stands up and we're back to a striking position.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Shoryu lands with a thumping leg kick.

Shoryu dives in and scores a takedown into Patrick's guard.

Patrick manages to wriggle out and sneak his way back up to his feet, so the fighters are now clinched up against the cage.
Patrick tries to pull guard but Shoryu holds him up against the cage and eventually Patrick drops back down to his feet.
Patrick fails to pull guard.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Denis Patrick. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Patrick is trying to pull guard but being pressed up against the cage enables Shoryu to keep the fight standing.

Patrick ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Patrick no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.
Patrick is looking to stand back up... there's a bit of a scramble and Shoryu dives into side control.
Patrick is trying to improve his position.

Shoryu wants to lay and pray for a moment but Patrick keeps working.
Shoryu advances nicely into full mount.
Patrick wants to control but Shoryu is having none of it.
Shoryu thowing strikes but they're hitting the gloves, not doing any damage.
Shoryu looking to control but Patrick is working nicely, looking to advance position himself.
Patrick is really trying hard to get back to his feet.

Patrick tries to hold on but Shoryu pushes him away.
Shoryu trying to control but Patrick is having none of it.
Denis Patrick overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Patrick tries to lock up and control but Shoryu gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Patrick can't escape the position.
Patrick tries to hold on but Shoryu pushes him away.

And that's the end of the fight!
Shingoke Shoryu comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Shoryu has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.

A relieved looking Shingoke Shoryu thanked the fans for their support and gave the usual line about them being amazing. They seemed to believe that he actually meant it.
