Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Olin Baxter (ranked 23211 p4p, 0 weight class) and Gary Effen (ranked 5577 p4p, 0 weight class). Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Olin Baxter!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Gary Effen!
The judges for this bout are Alec Ball, Gregory Folan and Steve Smith.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Effen looking for a takedown here - he's got it.
Effen slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.
Effen missing there with some ground and pound from the guard.
Effen trying to control the position from guard on top but Baxter is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Baxter throwing his legs up looking for a triangle.
Baxter will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Effen not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.
Baxter wants to sweep here but Effen controlling him for the moment.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Baxter is looking for a triangle but Effen pushes his legs off easily.

Effen is trying to control the action in half guard but Baxter is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.
Effen throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.

Effen is looking for a kimura here.

Effen trying to control the position from guard on top but Baxter is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Baxter looking for a sweep. Not yet Baxter, not yet.
The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now.
Effen loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.
Effen trying to control but Baxter is working from the bottom.

Baxter escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Effen gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Effen with a flurry of punches that miss.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Baxter is on top in guard.

Effen working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Baxter.
Effen is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Baxter throws a strike but Effen rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.

Baxter looking for a guillotine here but Effen defends easily.
Baxter keeping moving, preventing Effen from controlling successfully.
Baxter is trying to control the position but Effen postures up.
Baxter looking to hit a scissor sweep but Effen is one step ahead there.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

Baxter is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.

Baxter not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Baxter trying to strike from the bottom but really, it's not the best position to be doing that from!
Baxter has a closed guard, preventing Effen from standing up.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.

Effen feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Baxter is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Effen shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in side control! That's better than Effen was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!
Baxter is trying to improve his position.
Baxter parries the strikes from Effen easily there. Effen is wary of posturing up too much because it might enable Baxter to escape.
Baxter tries to get back to half guard but can't.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
An elbow from Effen crashes against the mat.
Baxter is looking to regain half guard here but Effen keeps moving and retains side control.
Effen takes advantage of some sloppy striking from Baxter to pass into mount.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

Effen is working on an americana here. Ooh, that looks pretty nasty! Nope, Baxter has managed to escape the submission attempt.
Baxter is in all sorts of trouble here.
Effen wants to control the pace but Baxter is squirming around nicely.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Baxter gives up his back whilst trying to strike.

Baxter is staying cool under pressure, defending well against the rear naked choke attempt from his opponent.

Baxter really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
Effen is breathing heavily.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Baxter is very frustrated here, being controlled quite effectively by Effen.

Effen looking for the choke from the back.
Baxter manages to reverse the position and now he's in Effen's guard. Nice work there by Baxter.
Effen looking to control.
Effen is in a good position here but he's just trying to control... And he's not even managing to do that successfully.
Effen has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

Baxter postures up and lands some nice ground and pound.

Gary Effen showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Baxter throws a knee to the body but it doesn't do much damage.

Effen is sneaking out the side here. He's bucked Baxter off and has taken his back!
Effen has the hooks sunk in and you can see the will to fight slowly draining out of Baxter's body.

Effen working for a RNC but it's not happening just yet.
Baxter turns into Effen and is now in his guard.

Effen looking for a guillotine here but Baxter defends easily.
Baxter cracks Effen with a solid left hand.

Baxter decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow.

Effen gets a double leg takedown into Baxter's guard.

Baxter manages to wriggle out and sneak his way back up to his feet, so the fighters are now clinched up against the cage.

Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Baxter effectively controlling the action here.
Effen blocks a couple of punches on the inside.

Effen manages to break the clinch.
Baxter walks into a straight right hand from Effen.
Effen tries to clinch but Baxter moves away
and Baxter connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.
Olin Baxter has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Gary Effen is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.
Baxter scores with a shot to the body.

I would just about give that final round to Gary Effen.
I've got Effen winning every round here. Surely the decision will go his way and he'll pick up a well deserved decision victory. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
