PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Gerry Hodge (ranked 6757 p4p, 0 weight class) and Konor McGregor (ranked 5943 p4p, 0 weight class). Rumors backstage are that the fighters have been paid to keep it standing but we know that would never happen in MMA!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Gerry Hodge!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Konor McGregor!
The judges for this bout are Aafke Stam, Paul Aken and Saam Ante.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Hodge with a poor takedown
and Hodge takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles.

McGregor tries to keep at a distance but Hodge has taken the fight into the clinch.
Hodge tries a knee to the head but McGregor blocks it.
Hodge misses with a hook to the ribs.
McGregor wants to break free. God knows he wants to breaaaak freeee.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Hodge jumps guard and drags McGregor to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back.
Hodge has McGregor pulled in close to control his posture.
Hodge will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.

McGregor gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent.

Hodge tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but McGregor paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Hodge tries to grapple but his opponent circles
and McGregor counters with a quick right hand to the jaw.

Hodge rushes McGregor and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.
McGregor wants to stall.
Hodge tries to pull guard but McGregor holds him up against the cage and eventually Hodge drops back down to his feet.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Hodge has McGregor pushed against the cage.
Hodge keeps the fight in the clinch, despite McGregor's efforts to push away.

Hodge pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Hodge fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Gerry Hodge. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Hodge scores with a takedown into McGregor's guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
McGregor wants to stand and escape but Hodge is having none of it.

Hodge gets to his feet - McGregor follows without any prompting.

Hodge has McGregor up against the cage in a clinch.
Hodge jumps guard but McGregor turns him against the cage and keeps the fight standing.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Hodge has McGregor pressed against the cage, preventing McGregor from circling away and getting back to striking at range.

McGregor breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
McGregor catches Hodge with a nice straight right. He seems pissed - ooooh, it's on now! On like donkey kong!

Hodge has McGregor up against the cage in a clinch.
Hodge is trying to pull guard but McGregor has him pressed against the cage.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Hodge tries to land a shot to the body but it's blocked.
Hodge tries to pull guard but can't drag his opponent to the mat. McGregor just stands there and leans against the cage.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Gerry Hodge will probably get the nod.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!



Hodge fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with McGregor, pushing him back against the cage.
Hodge lands with a right to the head.
Hodge really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
Hodge misses with a punch to the body.
Hodge throws an elbow but it's blocked.
Hodge jumps guard but McGregor stands there with Hodge around his waist. Hodge gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.
McGregor is trying to break free.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Hodge has McGregor pressed against the cage, preventing McGregor from circling away and getting back to striking at range.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Hodge tries to score a body lock takedown but McGregor shows good agility there to stay on his feet.
McGregor has had enough of the clinch and is looking to separate.

Hodge manages to break the clinch.

Hodge throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. McGregor was covering up waiting for the punch and Hodge finishes the takedown easily into guard.

Hodge throws an elbow that misses. McGregor uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Hodge's guard. Nice move by McGregor!

Hodge looking to hit a scissor sweep but McGregor is one step ahead there.

Hodge seems keen to control rather than go for a submission, at least for now.
McGregor must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
Hodge is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Hodge lands strikes from half guard.
McGregor blocking the ground and pound attempt from Hodge.
Hodge content to control rather than advance.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Hodge winds up and cracks McGregor with a swinging punch to the side of the head.
Hodge perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.
McGregor is looking to control Hodge's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can McGregor avoid being mounted?
McGregor looks like he's trying to stand up.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

Hodge postures up and decides to stand up, from the half guard. The ref calls for McGregor to stand up.

Hodge closes the distance and clinches.
McGregor tries to circle away but Hodge has him pinned against the cage.
Hodge keeps control of McGregor as he tries to wriggle out of the double underhooks.

Hodge breaks from the clinch.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
A head kick misses from Hodge.
And an attempted straight right on the counter from McGregor! But no joy.
Hodge is looking to clinch.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Gerry Hodge dominated that second round.
That's time! Hodge's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. This is the final round!


Hodge takes one on the button.

Hodge darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.

McGregor kicks off Hodge and gets to his feet.
Hodge misses the body punch
and McGregor counters with a nice uppercut.

Hodge instigates a clinch.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.

Hodge turns his hips and lands a very nice judo throw into side control!
McGregor struggling a bit here.

McGregor defending against the ground and pound.
Hodge scoring with punches from side control.
Hodge staying calm.
Hodge throws a knee to the body but it doesn't do much damage.

Hodge stands up and we're back to a striking position.
Hodge tries to clinch but fails miserably
and McGregor counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw.
McGregor tries a head kick but it misses.
Konor McGregor is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

Hodge scores with a nice takedown into half guard. Let's see what he's got on the ground.
Hodge controlling the pace.
Hodge throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.
Hodge controlling the action here.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
McGregor wants to get back to full guard.
Hodge controlling the action here.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.

Hodge feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
McGregor wants to get back to his feet but he's too absorbed in his own little project and Hodge manages to pass to side control.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Hodge stalling.
Konor McGregor has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

And that's the end of the fight!
I would just about give that final round to Konor McGregor.
I think Hodge has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
