PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Danny Page (ranked 4450 p4p, 500 weight class) and Ralph McGucken (ranked 4732 p4p, 527 weight class). Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 12 - 23 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Danny Page!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Ralph McGucken!
The judges for this bout are Alec Ball, Elvis Blanc and Steve Smith.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

McGucken closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.
McGucken jumps guard but Page turns him against the cage and keeps the fight standing.
Page creates a bit of distance and throws an elbow that only just misses.
McGucken tries to land a knee to the body but he is off balance and Page avoids it.
With the fighters up against the cage, Page throws an elbow but misses.

Page breaks the clinch.
Page throws a sloppy head kick and McGucken moves out of range easily.

Page shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches McGucken napping and manages to drive through into side control!
McGucken can't do much from the bottom here.
McGucken is letting Page control him for a moment.
McGucken is positioning himself to get back to half guard.
McGucken gives up the full mount - oops, sloppy defensive grappling there!
Page lands a couple of good shots and McGucken has given up his back, trying to escape the position!

Page tries to keep control of the position but McGucken is staying busy.

Page is staying calm and holding on to the back position, whilst working on a rear naked choke. McGucken is defending well though. Page let's go of the attempt for now.

Page tries to get the hooks in deep but McGucken pushed the leg off.
Page controlling well, preventing McGucken from escaping the position.
McGucken prevents Page from getting a body triangle.

Page working for a choke but McGucken is defending well.

McGucken is in bad spot here.

Page goes for a risky armbar from back mount and it's not paid off. McGucken escapes and is now in half guard on top.

McGucken decides to stand up and try his luck on the feet.
Page rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but McGucken moves out of range and avoids them all easily.
Page leaves McGucken with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Page fakes a head shot and lands one to the body.

McGucken instigates a clinch.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Page gets double underhooks to prevent a takedown attempt from McGucken.
Danny Page has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Ralph McGucken.

Page managing to block the knees to the body from McGucken.

Page has clasped his hands together around McGucken's back... aaand, he's got a takedown into side control. Nicely done.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
You can see the frustration on McGucken's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
Page controls the position.
McGucken is looking to reverse the position.
The strikes coming from Page are missing the target in this wave of attacks.
McGucken is trying to get back to half guard.
Page controls the position from side control.

McGucken sneaks back into half guard.
McGucken gets full guard.
We've been informed that McGucken has been working hard on his conditioning in the buildup to the fight.
McGucken wants to stand up but Page is controlling him.
McGucken is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
McGucken wants to sweep but no luck.
McGucken keeping full guard, as Page tries to pass.
Page slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.
Page trying to control but McGucken is working from the bottom.
If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Danny Page dominated that round.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.



The fight moves into the clinch position.
Page tries to break the clinch but McGucken is controlling the position.
McGucken tried to land a shot to the body but connects with Page's elbow.
McGucken drops down for a takedown but doesn't get it.
McGucken scores with a shot to the side of Page's head.
A head punch on the inside from McGucken fails to land.
McGucken throws a head punch that misses.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
McGucken lands a shot to the body.
McGucken misses with a hook from the clinch.
A short left from Page.
McGucken has a couple of punches blocked by Page.
McGucken putting his Muay Thai to good use. He has Page in a tight clinch and is doing some damage with knees to the body.

Page works for the underhooks and manages to get a trip takedown into guard.
McGucken pulls Page in close to prevent any damage.
Page trying to control but McGucken is working from the bottom.
McGucken can't keep his opponent in guard - Page advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount.
Page working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that.
Page trying to pass the guard but McGucken defending well.
McGucken on the receiving end of some nice ground and pound.
Page wants to control but McGucken is keeping him busy.
Page is pressing down on McGucken's thigh, looking to free his foot. McGucken is holding on for now.

Page looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.

McGucken is looking to improve his position.
Page perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.

Page wants to work for an arm triangle but McGucken is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.

Page is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, McGucken has managed to free his arm - good work.
Page seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but McGucken does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.

Page throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.
Page is thwarting McGucken's attempts to control the position.
Danny Page overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
McGucken holds on for dear life, maintaining half guard for now.
Page is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that McGucken can do to turn this around?

Page is figuring out what he wants to do next.
McGucken manages to get to full guard.
Page forces his way into half guard.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
McGucken is staying active underneath Page, who seems content to just control the action from this position.

Page perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.
Ground and pound from Page.
McGucken has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Page is working away from the top position though.
McGucken tries to get to full guard but Page has control of the leg.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Page seems to be looking for submissions.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Danny Page dominated that second round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. This is the final round!



McGucken moves into range and clinches up with Page.

McGucken tries to roll over but Page keeps him under control.

Page thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed McGucken's head.
Page with a momentary lay and pray from half guard.

McGucken trying to hold on to Page's head to control him but Page postures up.
Page trying to control the action but McGucken is working from the bottom.
McGucken keeping hold of Page's head, controlling as best he can.
Page lands with an elbow from half guard - that looked like it hurt.
McGucken tries to get to full guard but Page has control of the leg.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Page perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.
McGucken is trying to get back to full guard.
McGucken is refusing to be controlled, as Page sits in half guard.
Page is really struggling to control McGucken but he's trying to hold on to the position.
Page performing his best blanket impression for a moment.
Page thows a huge punch but McGucken dodges it nicely.
McGucken tries to kick Page off but Page keeps his base steady and stays in half guard.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
McGucken paws at his opponent with the jab and then lunges in with a straight, right on the button.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Page tries to keep at a distance but McGucken has taken the fight into the clinch.

McGucken has double underhooks and is working for a body lock takedown. He's got it. The fighters land in half guard but Page regains guard immediately.

Page manages to escape and get back to his feet.
McGucken takes a hook to the side of the head. I wonder if that's got his ears ringing.
McGucken takes a shot right to the bread basket.
Ralph McGucken has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Page takes a punch to the jaw and another one to the bread basket.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
McGucken takes one on the chin but seems OK.
McGucken throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.

McGucken rushes Page and presses him up against the cage.
McGucken lands a left hand that snaps the head of Page backwards.
McGucken tries a knee to the head but Page blocks it.

Page pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Page lands with an overhand left.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Page listening to his corner there, landing a nice uppercut.
Page throws a leg kick that misses.

McGucken fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Page, pushing him back against the cage.

Page is trying to trip McGucken. He has hold of a leg but McGucken is hopping around, keeping his balance for the moment. Page persists though and gets the takedown into guard.
Danny Page is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
Page is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.
Page stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. McGucken swivels though and keeps the full guard.

McGucken isolates an arm and boxes in a triangle. Page stacks McGucken on his neck as he steps over and passes to the side. He's now in a much more dominant position where he can look to do some serious damage. Nice move by Page!

Page stands up and beckons McGucken to his feet.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Danny Page.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Page, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
