PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Alexandre Cassel (ranked 5302 p4p, 0 weight class) and Tommaso Carsara (ranked 4536 p4p, 0 weight class). Both these guys have solid standup skills and neither is particularly fantastic on the ground, so let's hope for a nice standup war!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Alexandre Cassel!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Tommaso Carsara!
The judges for this bout are Frank Dennis, George Francis and Robert Twigg.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Carsara has Cassel up against the cage in a clinch.

Carsara manages to pull guard. Let's see whether he can land a sub off his back.
Cassel is fighting to break Carsara's control of his arms but Carsara is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.
Carsara throws some sloppy strikes off his back.
Carsara trying to punch from his back but it's not doing any damage.
Cassel wants to control from the top but Carsara keeps moving.
Carsara seems keen to control rather than go for a submission, at least for now.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Carsara lands a beautiful sweep and he's now moved into his opponent's guard.

Carsara told us pre-fight that he has been working on his escapes in training. Let's see if he can call on some of his new skills to get back to his feet.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Cassel can't keep his opponent in guard - Carsara advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount.

It looks like Carsara might be adopting somewhat of a lay and pray gameplan here, which I'm sure won't go down too well with the paying fans in attendance... Or the ring announcers come to think of it.
Cassel knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Carsara on the ground.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Carsara is continuing to stall.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Cassel shoots in for a takedown but Carsara shows good takedown defense.

Carsara fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Cassel to the ground. Carsara is now in Cassel's guard.

Carsara got a little sloppy there for a moment and Cassel has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Carsara has managed to get both his arms back between Cassel's legs - danger averted.

Carsara gets to his feet - Cassel follows without any prompting.

Carsara closes the distance and gets a trip takedown into side control. Cassel quickly recovers to half guard.
Cassel pushes Carsara off but Carsara dives into side control.
Cassel is breathing heavily.
Carsara just content to control the position.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Carsara thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.

Carsara stands up and beckons Cassel to his feet.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Cassel misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Cassel misses with a takedown attempt - Carsara sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
Carsara throws a fast counter high kick but Cassel manages to duck under it in time.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Cassel misses with a wild combination.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Tommaso Carsara dominated that round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.



Carsara drives through with a takedown into guard.

Carsara stands up.

Carsara shoots in and gets a takedown into Cassel's guard.
Cassel is looking to stand back up but Carsara counters by passing into half guard. Oops... bit sloppy there by Cassel.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Carsara's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.

Carsara seems to be looking for submissions.
Carsara has freed up his trapped foot and advances to mount.

Carsara is working on an americana here. Ooh, that looks pretty nasty! Nope, Cassel has managed to escape the submission attempt.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

Carsara has good solid back control here.
Carsara punches Cassel on the ear.
Cassel can't escape the position.

Carsara is looking to finish the fight by rear naked choke. Cassel knows exactly what he's got planned though, so he's defending well. Maybe a few strikes would soften Cassel for a finish.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Carsara has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Cassel is defending well here and trying to improve his position.
Carsara has the hooks sunk in and you can see the will to fight slowly draining out of Cassel's body.
Cassel can't escape the position.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Cassel is covering up but some of the strikes from Carsara are getting through and doing damage.
Carsara loading up with punches from the back mount - how long can Cassel hold on?

Carsara is cranking Cassel's head sideways - that looks painful. He's managed to get his other arm under the chin and this looks bad for Cassel! He's tightened the choke and Cassel is tapping out!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:40 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (RNC). Tommaso Carsara!
