PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Jackson Avery (ranked 4241 p4p, 413 weight class) and Mauricio Macri (ranked 3630 p4p, 356 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Jackson Avery!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Mauricio Macri!
The judges for this bout are Damien Edna, Ron Honeybunn and Eliza Hachem.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Macri rushes in with a sloppy looking punch
and Avery counters with a right hand to the body.
Macri shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Jab, jab by Macri - just one landing.
Macri throws an overhand right that lands on Avery's shoulder, as Avery tries to avoid the shot.
Avery has been talking about how he's improved his wrestling in the run up to the fight so let's see if that's enough to sway the balance.
Macri tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
Avery was looking to counter that last move with a shot to the body but he didn't commit.
Avery avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
Macri throws a jab, cross combination which is slipped
letting Avery counter with a right hand.
Macri defending well as Avery loads up on a big left hand.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Macri takes a jab on the nose there. A little bit of blood seems to be coming out. Hopefully that won't affect his breathing.

Macri drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

Avery working for a triangle but Macri defends it easily.

Avery is looking for a triangle here but Macri uses the submission attempt to pass into side control.

Avery can't do much from the bottom here.
Macri wants to take a breather but Avery manages to regain guard - a lesson learnt for Macri.

Avery has his foot on Macri's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Macri works his way back into a safe position though.
Macri postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

Avery is pulling down on Macri's head. It's preventing any offense from Macri, at least for the moment.
Macri wants to control from the top but Avery keeps moving.
Macri wants to pass the guard but Avery is keeping the position.

Macri slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.
The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.
Macri wants to control from the top but Avery keeps moving.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Macri tries to clinch but Avery moves away
and Avery counters with a stiff right hand.
Macri tries to close the distance and clinch but Avery swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
Macri lands with a right hand.
Macri on the wrong end of a nice hook.

Macri clinches.
Macri is working for takedown but Avery is calmly controlling the position for now.
Avery gets double underhooks to prevent a takedown attempt from Macri.
Jackson Avery has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Mauricio Macri.
Still in the clinch, Avery scores with a nice short uppercut.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Macri is trying to pull guard but Avery turns him against the cage and we stay in the clinch.
Macri is looking for a takedown up against the cage. Avery gets underhooks though and prevents the takedown attempt.
A head punch on the inside from Avery fails to land.

Macri breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Macri throws a nice looking combination but Avery bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.
Macri lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Avery circles away quickly and effectively.
Avery swung with a counter right hand that didn't connect.
Avery ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Macri moves away.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Macri throws a nice hook to the body that draws an oooh from the crowd.
Avery tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Macri was well out of range. Poor timing from Avery.
Macri fakes a head shot and lands one to the body.
Macri fails with an attempt to clinch.
Macri fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Mauricio Macri will probably get the nod.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!

Macri scores with a nice head shot.
The fighters circling - Avery throws out the jab but it was never going to land.
Avery avoids the clinch attempt nicely.

Macri fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Avery, pushing him back against the cage.
Macri prevents a body shot from Avery.
Avery is using his height advantage well here, landing a good percentage of his punches.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Avery works for underhooks and lands a body shot in the process.
Macri is trying to work for a single leg takedown but Avery pulls him back up using the underhooks.
Macri pushes off an throws an elbow but Avery leans to the side and avoids it. We're back to clinching against the cage.
Avery prevents the takedown attempt.
Avery fails to land with a short punch on the inside.
Avery scores with a shot to the side of Macri's head.

Avery lands a hook to the side of the head.
Avery scores with a hook to the body.
Avery doesn't land with the attempted body shot.
Macri is trying to stall.
Avery lands a hook that snaps the head of Macri backwards.
Avery is leaning against Macri and scores with a nice uppercut to the body.

Macri is trying to pull guard but Avery turns him against the cage and we stay in the clinch.

Macri shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Avery's guard.

Avery working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Macri doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Macri manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

Macri might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Avery haven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Avery pulls Macri in close to prevent any damage.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
Macri takes a shot right to the bread basket.
Macri tries for a takedown but Avery circles away easily
and Avery counters with a straight right hand.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Avery lands a pitter patter jab to the forehead of his opponent.
Avery keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Jackson Avery dominated that second round.
Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin! Let's hear some noise people - this is the final round!


Macri closes the distance but Avery moves to the side
and Avery counters with a massive hook, right on the button! He's out cold! Damn, that was naaaaaasty! Hopefully he'll be OK.
