PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Crack Head (ranked 3571 p4p, 376 weight class) and Al Swearengen (ranked 3126 p4p, 335 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 13 - 12 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Crack Head!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 6 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Al Swearengen!
The judges for this bout are Frank Antenori, Timothy Bukovac and Jack Bonds.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Swearengen connects with a jab.
Swearengen keeps his opponent at a distance with a nice jab.
Head moves his head to the side to avoid a jab but walks straight into a cross.
Head is looking to clinch but Swearengen is avoiding it.
Swearengen connects with the punch.
Swearengen swats away the attempt to clinch by Head.
Swearengen looks to land a left hand but Head moved out of range nicely.

Head closes the distance and clinches.
Swearengen drops down looking for an ankle pick but Head pulls his leg out and moves away.
We can't be sure of the tactics at this early stage but we have heard that Swearengen has been working on his takedowns a lot in the buildup to the fight and we can only assume he's going to look to take this to the mat.
Swearengen looks to land a right hand but Head moved out of range.
Swearengen stooping low to avoid any incoming strikes and then lunges in with an uppercut come cross that lands flush.
Swearengen cracks Head with a good jab.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Head misses with a jab, cross combination.
Head tries to clinch up but Swearengen circles away and keeps his distance.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Swearengen lands a body shot.
Head throws a big shot that misses.
Swearengen throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
Head defending well as Swearengen loads up on a big left hand.
Head is trying to close the distance and clinch up, after that failed offence from Swearengen.
Swearengen is using his reach advantage to land shots from outside his opponent's range.
Head fakes a couple of low kicks, before throwing one on the third attempt. It connects and Swearengen has to reset his feet before getting ready to engage.

Head moves into range and clinches up with Swearengen.
Swearengen has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. Head is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet.
Head tries to pull guard but can't drag his opponent to the mat. Swearengen just stands there and leans against the cage.
Head using the Thai plumb to throw knees but Swearengen has his back arched nicely, preventing the strike.
Swearengen drops to a knee looking for a takedown but Head gets the underhooks and prevents it.
Crack Head has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Al Swearengen.

Head pulls Swearengen into guard.

Head looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Swearengen stands and throws Head's legs to the side, diving into side control.
Swearengen throws a strike aimed at the side of Head's head but Head avoids it well.
Swearengen wants to control but Head is keeping him busy.
Head is trying to get back to half guard.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Head is not content to let Swearengen control the position.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Swearengen has knee on belly and moves into mount.
Swearengen can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Head is looking to escape.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Head is working to get back to half guard.

Swearengen is looking to secure an arm. He's managed it! He's pivoting for an armbar - that looks tight! But Head has managed to get out of it and now he's in a dominant position. Nice work from Head!
Head has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.

Swearengen working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Head doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Head manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
We've been hearing that Head has been drilling a lot of ground and pound in training, so let's see if he get the finish.
Head wants to stand but Swearengen is controlling his posture from full guard.

Swearengen has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Head can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Swearengen looking for a guillotine here but Head defends easily.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Swearengen working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Head doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Oh but Swearengen is tightening it up a little... Head has to be careful here... He's got his foot tucked under now, this looks tight! Head reacted too slowly and this one could be over in a matter of seconds! YES! Head taps out! Nice BJJ there by Swearengen!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:22 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Triangle Choke). Al Swearengen!
An out of breath Al Swearengen thanked his loyal fans in his post fight interview, giving them credit for his success over the course of his career.
