PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between AC Slater (ranked 858 p4p, 139 weight class) and Neil Gilas (ranked 672 p4p, 110 weight class). Slater kept the crowd waiting but all that was forgotten when his ring entrance music started. The incomparable musical genius that is Stop What Ya Doin. The crowd seem to be enjoying Gilas's choice of entrance music: Remember The Name - Fort Minor. Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 26 - 16 - 1, fighting out of Montreal, AC Slater!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 24 - 17 - 1, fighting out of Hilo, Neil Gilas!
The judges for this bout are Yves DeLean, Robert Douchet and Alec Ball.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Slater slips a jab from Gilas.
Slater tries to counter with a takedown but Gilas is quick to defend against it.
Slater scores with a jab to the jaw of his opponent.


It looks like Neil Gilas has been cut.
Slater looks to score with a combo but nothing lands.
Gilas ducks under a wild hook from Slater.
Slater fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Gilas with a nice looking leg kick. You could hear that one land in a back row.
Slater has a nice red mark on his side after a thudding body kick by Gilas.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Gilas fakes the leg kick and cracks Slater in the body.

Slater chopped to the floor by a nice leg kick but he springs right back up before Gilas can pounce on him.
Gilas moving in and out of range nicely, whilst landing the scoring shot.
Gilas's coach down at mickeyharts the greatest was telling us pre-fight that they have been working on Gilas's balance. Obviously they view that as a key factor in the outcome of this fight.

Gilas is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Slater's half guard.

Slater pushes Gilas off and gets back to his feet.
Gilas stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Gilas wants it to stay on the feet.

Slater shoots for a takedown but Gilas saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.

Some bone on bone action there as Slater checks a low kick. Luckily it wasn't a particularly hard one.
Slater was looking to counter that move with a punch but didn't quite pull the trigger.

The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

Gilas closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Slater did well to prevent Gilas getting side control.

Gilas throws a strike but Slater avoids it easily and moves to full guard.

Gilas looking to sit in guard and control but Slater gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Gilas wants to get back to his feet but Slater is in a dominant position and won't allow it.
If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
Gilas throws a solid leg kick but Slater takes the impact on his shin and smiles at Gilas.
Slater on the wrong end of a nice low kick. He's acting like it's no big deal but he doesn't want to take many more of those.
Good leg kick by Gilas there. It's the ones that make that thud noise that hurt and that was an almighty thud.
Gilas feints with a shoulder and throws a nice leg kick to Slater's calf.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Slater.
And an attempted straight right on the counter from Gilas! But no joy.
Gilas scores with a slapping inside leg kick.
Gilas motions for Slater to come forward. Gilas throws a leg kick but it misses it's target.
Slater shoots in for a double leg but Gilas sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Gilas lands with a cross.

Slater changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Gilas looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.
Gilas tries to get back to his feet but has found himself mounted instead. Damn, that's gotta suck.
Slater can't control as he wanted to and Gilas manages to get the fight back to his half guard.
Slater thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Gilas is looking for a sweep. Slater is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Slater will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Gilas regains full guard, whilst avoiding punches from Slater.
Slater wants to control from the top but Gilas keeps moving.

Gilas looking for a sweep. Not yet Gilas, not yet.
Slater postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
Slater lands a nice shot whilst sitting in his opponent's guard.
Slater postures up and scores with a shot to the body and a follow up elbow to the head.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Slater accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

Slater stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Gilas swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Gilas looking to hit a scissor sweep but Slater is one step ahead there.

Gilas is avoiding any damage by keeping wrist control.
It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.
Slater is working Gilas over from the guard. He should look to pass the guard and do a little more damage with these strikes.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.

A looping hook to the body misses from Gilas. Slater does a little dance to reset his feet.

That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business. This is the final round!


Horrible takedown attempt by Slater or perhaps it was just good defense by Gilas, which made it look bad.
Slater shoots in looking for a takedown. Gilas tries to sprawl out of it but Slater keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Gilas manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
And Gilas responds with a good body kick, but Slater manages to step out the way in time.

AC Slater is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

Slater throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Gilas tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Slater is in Gilas's guard.

Slater shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Gilas but Gilas pushes him off and we're back to square one.

Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

I think Gilas has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
