Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Lei Makana (ranked 2288 p4p, 259 weight class) and Shawn Griffin (ranked 2311 p4p, 262 weight class). Griffin has chosen Medicate - Flaw as his entrance music. Shawn Griffin has the power to score a knockout today if he connects clean with Lei Makana's chin.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 5 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Lei Makana!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 11 - 10 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Shawn Griffin!
The judges for this bout are Phil Schofield, Sam Margolis and Paul Tew.

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

The fight moves into the clinch position.

Griffin breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
The fight stays on the outside here - Makana looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
We've been hearing reports that Makana has been drilling takedowns in recent sessions so let's see if that has an impact on the result of this fight.
Makana shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Griffin but Griffin pushes him off and we're back to square one.
Griffin now looks to counter with a shot at the body.
Makana goes for a double leg but Griffin avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Griffin continues to drive forward.
As Makana backs off Griffin throws a huge counter combo but Makana manages to avoid it all.
Makana shoots in looking for a takedown. Griffin tries to sprawl out of it but Makana keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Griffin manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Lei Makana. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Makana will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
Griffin rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Makana moves out of range and avoids them all easily.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Makana is defended easily by Griffin.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Griffin throws a 1-2 combo that connects squarely on Makana's jaw, knocking him onto his back! Griffin dives in looking to finish as Makana flails his arms in a desperate attempt to block Griffin's strikes! Griffin is raining down hammerfists and the ref stops it! Makana's desperate flailing just didn't constitute intelligent defence. Some people will probably question the ref's decision but Makana was definitely hurt and the ref saved him from taking unnecessary punishment. A fighter's safety is paramount in this sport.
