PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Jonathan Davis (ranked 628 p4p, 25 weight class) and Xing Pugberg (ranked 691 p4p, 31 weight class). Davis comes to the cage accompanied by Imperial March (L.O.D. Rage Mix). Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 13 - 9 - 1, fighting out of New York, Jonathan Davis!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 12 - 7 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Xing Pugberg!
The judges for this bout are Steve Montenegro, Russell Pearce and John Kavanagh.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Davis looks to land a combination but Pugberg avoids it well.
Pugberg feints the counter takedown.
Pugberg avoids a punch combination nicely.
Pugberg lunges in with an uppercut that skims his opponent's chin.
Davis jabs Pugberg to the body, keeping him at a distance.
Pugberg closes the distance and takes a jab right on the nose as he does so.

Pugberg looking to score a takedown here. Davis is defending well but Pugberg drives through and ends up in Davis's guard.
Davis tries to land a sweep but no joy.

Pugberg won't allow Davis to sweep him here.

Pugberg postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Davis is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Pugberg, into his guard.

The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Davis looking to control the position here, rather than advance.

Pugberg wants to sweep here but Davis controlling him for the moment.

Pugberg is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Pugberg is on top in guard.

Davis wants to control here, rather than go for any submissions from the bottom. At least for now.
Davis is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Davis is looking for a sweep. Pugberg is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.

Pugberg seems to be working for a kimura but Davis defends the submission attempt.
Davis is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Davis has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Pugberg is working away from the top position though.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Davis keeping hold of Pugberg's head, controlling as best he can.
Pugberg looking to pass the half guard. Not this time.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Davis is trying to get back to full guard.

Davis moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.

That was a close round but I would say that Jonathan Davis will probably get the nod.

Pugberg closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.

Pugberg is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Davis knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.

Xing Pugberg has got the better of the ground game so far.

Pugberg is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Davis is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.

Davis wants to improve position but instead he's given up his back.

Pugberg is staying calm and holding on to the back position, whilst working on a rear naked choke. Davis is defending well though. Pugberg let's go of the attempt for now.

Pugberg is looking to finish the fight by rear naked choke. Davis knows exactly what he's got planned though, so he's defending well. Maybe a few strikes would soften Davis for a finish.

Well, with Pugberg on his back, surely it's only a matter of time before Davis is tapping out... Can he escape the position?
I really don't envy Davis right now.

Pugberg is persistently looking for the submission but Davis is defending it well.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.

Pugberg has his hand under the chin of his opponent looking for the choke. He's nearly got it! This one could be all over! But no, Davis has freed his hand and lives to survive another… well, another couple of seconds at least!

Xing Pugberg showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's time! Back to the action! The crowd applaud as we get ready to start the final round!


Davis throws a couple of head shots and lands with the final one - a decent hook, which struck Pugberg on the side of the head.
A jab from Pugberg finds it's way through Davis's defenses.
Pugberg goes for a double leg but Davis avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Davis continues to drive forward.

Davis just misses with a punch to the body.
Davis misses with a wild body shot.
Davis throws a series of punches but Pugberg avoids them all with ease.
Wow, both these guys are really going for it!
Pugberg throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Davis.
Jab, jab by Pugberg - just one landing.
Davis takes a shot right to the bread basket.

Pugberg shoots in and bounces Davis off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.
Davis will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Davis is on top in guard.

Davis looking to sit in guard and control but Pugberg gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Pugberg is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! Davis is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! Davis has escaped and now he's on top!

Davis is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Davis is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.
Davis wanted to stand there but Pugberg had control of the position.
Davis content to stall in guard here.
Davis wants to stand but Pugberg has a closed guard, so he can't escape.

Davis got a little sloppy there for a moment and Pugberg has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Davis has managed to get both his arms back between Pugberg's legs - danger averted.

Pugberg is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Davis defends well.
Pugberg has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

Pugberg is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
Pugberg is trying to control the position but Davis postures up.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Davis slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.

Pugberg is looking for a triangle but Davis pushes his legs off easily.
Davis controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.

Pugberg wants to sweep here but Davis controlling him for the moment.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.

I would just about give that final round to Xing Pugberg.
I think Pugberg has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
