PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Terry Bogard (ranked 2693 p4p, 310 weight class) and Yen Askren (ranked 3279 p4p, 381 weight class). Askren has chosen Hello from the Askren Side as his entrance music. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 12 - 12 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Terry Bogard!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 11 - 10 - 1, fighting out of Sydney, Yen Askren!
The judges for this bout are John Roberts, Russell Pearce and Chad Campbell.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Askren missing with a left hand there. Bogard was out of range so wasted energy throwing that one.
Askren tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Bogard was well out of range. Poor timing from Askren.
Bogard throws an overhand right that lands on Askren's shoulder, as Askren tries to avoid the shot.
Askren shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Bogard as he avoids it easily.
Askren with a hook.
Bogard connects with a leg kick. He turned his hip over nicely there.
Askren throws a body punch but Bogard moves out of range.
Askren takes a nice looking leg kick right on the meat of his thigh there.
Some bone on bone action there as Askren checks a low kick. Luckily it wasn't a particularly hard one.
Bogard blocks a jab.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Askren misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
Bogard swung with a counter punch to the body but it didn't connect.
Yen Askren seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Bogard connects with a leg kick. Askren looked like he was expecting something else and didn't defend it.

and he gets countered with a snapping leg kick.
Askren tries to check a leg kick but that clearly hurt him.

Bogard swings for the body but Askren moves out of range.

Askren cracks a nice hook into Bogard's ribs.

and Bogard makes him pay by landing a thudding low kick.
Askren lands with an overhand left.
Askren changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Bogard tries to avoid it but Askren manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Bogard to the ground. Bogard escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Askren doesn't react quick enough there as he takes a shot to the body.
Bogard uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Askren.

Bogard slips a straight right by Askren.
Askren takes one to the chin there.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Bogard lands a lovely overhand right.
Terry Bogard is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.

Askren throws a shot to the body.
Askren misses with a straight right.

Bogard lands a nice hook to Askren's body. Askren takes it in his stride and looks to land his own strikes.
Askren connects with a hook to the side of his opponent's head.

and Askren counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head.
A looping hook to the body misses from Askren. Bogard does a little dance to reset his feet.
Bogard tries a head kick but it misses.
Bogard takes a really solid shot there but just smiles back and shrugs his shoulders.

Bogard finds nothing but air with that leg kick attempt.
Askren goes for a double leg but Bogard avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Bogard continues to drive forward.
Terry Bogard has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Yen Askren.
Bogard keeps his opponent at a distance with a nice jab.

Askren uses good footwork to get in and out and land a nice right hand before Bogard has time to react.
Askren lands a jab, followed by a cross and another cross, as Bogard backs up against the cage.

Like a baseball bat into the meat of his leg there - nice leg kick by Bogard.
Askren fakes and then throws a beautiful body shot. Bogard looks a bit winded and takes a step backwards to take a breath.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Askren loads up on a big right hand but Bogard slips the punch.
Bogard fakes with a right hand and throws a good leg kick, right into the thigh. That had to hurt Askren.
Bogard delivers a nice body kick.

Askren scores with a one two! Bogard had his feet all tangled up there and couldn't avoid the strikes.

Askren avoids the head kick by Bogard.
Askren works his jab well there, keeping his opponent at a distance.
Bogard throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Askren lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Bogard circles away quickly and effectively.
Bogard throws a low kick but Askren moves out of range easily.
Bogard takes a body punch but keeps moving.
Bogard wants to slow Askren down by chopping away at his legs.
The crowd applaud the fighters' efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Bogard throws a right high kick that is partially blocked by Askren.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Yen Askren will probably get the nod.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!

Bogard motions for Askren to come forward. Bogard throws a leg kick but it misses it's target.

Askren closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

The crowd are loving this. Great action here.

Bogard has hold of Askren's hands but Askren slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow.

Askren must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

Bogard had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Askren defends it easily.
Bogard lands a beautiful sweep and he's now moved into his opponent's guard.

Askren is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

We've been hearing good reports from Bogard's training camp. Apparently he has been rolling around with some good quality BJJ practitioners and has been sharpening his skills. Let's see if that has an impact on the fight today.

It looked like Bogard wanted to counter with a hook but didn't fully commit.

Askren dives in and grabs Bogard's left leg, looking for a takedown. Bogard pushes down on Askren's head and hops out.

and Askren counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw.
Bogard uses good head movement to avoid the hook from Askren.
Askren lands with a shot to the body.
Askren throws a hook to the side of Bogard's head but Bogard sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Terry Bogard.
Well Bogard has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
