Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Carlos Ruas (ranked 1375 p4p, 176 weight class) and Maikel Fortuyn (ranked 1189 p4p, 152 weight class). The atmosphere really building for this one as we go over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 11 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Carlos Ruas!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 12 - 6 - 0, fighting out of New York, Maikel Fortuyn!
The judges for this bout are Franklyn Lucas, Dean Styles and Anthony Taglia.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Ruas tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Fortuyn swivels and escapes.
Fortuyn steps in looking to clinch after the strikes miss from Ruas.

Ruas uses good head movement to avoid the hook from Fortuyn.
Fortuyn stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Fortuyn wants it to stay on the feet.
Fortuyn looked like he wanted to counter with a punch but didn't throw it.
Ruas defending well as Fortuyn loads up on a big left hand.
Ruas appears to be looking for a counter takedown.

Fortuyn felt the need to train up his defensive grappling in the buildup to the fight. Presumably he was expecting to be in a difficult position like this, so let's see if he can get out of it.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

The step up in weight doesn't seem to be a problem for Fortuyn. He's performing admirably here against the bigger man.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

Fortuyn is looking for a sweep. Ruas is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Fortuyn really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Ruas. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Ruas shoots in looking for a takedown but Fortuyn manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Ruas's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.

and Fortuyn holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.
With the fighters up against the cage, Fortuyn throws an elbow but misses.

Carlos Ruas overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Ruas wants to control from the top but Fortuyn keeps moving.
Fortuyn controls Ruas momentarily but Ruas frees himself.

Fortuyn is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Ruas throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Fortuyn's waist but Fortuyn gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Ruas off to one side.

Ruas has his front leg slapped to the side - a nice low kick landing there from Fortuyn.
A looping hook to the body misses from Fortuyn. Ruas does a little dance to reset his feet.

And an attempted straight right on the counter from Fortuyn! But no joy.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Horrible takedown attempt by Ruas or perhaps it was just good defense by Fortuyn, which made it look bad.

Fortuyn wings a very wild body shot but it does the job and lands to the midsection.
Ruas will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.

Carlos Ruas spoke after the fight, saying 'No one likes seeing their opponent's hand raised, but that just means that they were the better man today. My team at 3Band MMA and I will break down this match and make the proper changes for my next camp.'.
