PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Joshua Brown (ranked 4209 p4p, 441 weight class) and Johnny Winkle (ranked 22926 p4p, 611 weight class). Brown kept the crowd waiting but all that was forgotten when his ring entrance music started. The incomparable musical genius that is Hail Mary Tupac. Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 5 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Joshua Brown!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Johnny Winkle!
The judges for this bout are Jorge Garcia, Russell Pearce and Anthony Taglia.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Brown manages to get an easy takedown there - catching Winkle on his heels. He'll look to pass Winkle's guard now, I'm sure.
Brown slips effortlessly into side control - very nice.
Brown misses with a strike but at least he's keeping busy, looking to cause some damage - that will still help him when it comes to the judges scorecards.
Winkle tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Brown wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.

Brown with some aggressive grappling here. He's looking for submissions here, rather than waiting for the opportunity to counter.

Brown takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.

Brown has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
The crowd growing excited in anticipation of a finish here! Right on cue, Brown cracks his opponent with a massive right hand that draws loud cheers!
Winkle sneaks a leg back under and regains half guard and is working straight away to try and get back to guard. He hasn't managed just yet though.

Winkle is not content to let Brown control the position.

Brown is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Winkle has managed to free his arm - good work.

Winkle really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Brown. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Brown is on top in guard.

Brown has gone for a leg lock! Winkle slips out almost immediately though and dives into Brown's guard.

Joshua Brown overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Brown is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Winkle is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.

Winkle got a little sloppy there for a moment and Brown has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Winkle has managed to get both his arms back between Brown's legs - danger averted.

Brown working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Winkle doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Winkle manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Brown wants to sweep here but Winkle controlling him for the moment.

Winkle stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Brown swivels though and keeps the full guard.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

That was a close second round but I would say that Joshua Brown will probably get the nod.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business. This is the final round!


Winkle defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Brown.
Brown goes for a double leg but Winkle avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Winkle continues to drive forward.

Brown shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Winkle as he jumps to the side.
Brown closes the distance and clinches up with Winkle, looking for a takedown. Brown pushes Winkle against the cage but Winkle circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.

Well, if Brown is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.

Brown seems to be working for a kimura but Winkle defends the submission attempt.
Brown is nestled in close to Winkle, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Brown moves nicely into side control.
Brown wants to lay and pray for a moment but Winkle keeps working.
Brown is pausing for a moment. What's he doing? It looks like he's clearing his nose. Oh dude! He's shot a load of snot all down Winkle's shoulder. That is not cool.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Joshua Brown is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

Well I reckon that's a shut out for Brown, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.

After the fight, Joshua Brown was humble in paying tribute to his opponent but made it clear he wants to go on to bigger and better things. It seemed to go down well with the crowd who cheered him loudly.
