PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Cheik Imbula (ranked 173 p4p, 21 weight class) and Lao Shin (ranked 202 p4p, 29 weight class). Imbula's ring entrance music is that housewives' favourite, ~Apache~. Shin has chosen Shaolin Chamber of Death as his entrance music. The atmosphere really building for this one as we go over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 25 - 13 - 2, fighting out of Las Vegas, Cheik Imbula!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 40 - 16 - 2, fighting out of London, Lao Shin!
The judges for this bout are , Don Winkell and Jack Bonds.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Shin on the wrong end of a decent looking cross there.
Shin lands an overhand right.
The fighters circle momentarily. Shin darts into range and connects with a nice straight punch.
Shin throws an ugly left hook that misses
and Imbula counters with a nice body shot.
Imbula scores with a nice right hand.
Shin's coach down at Dr Hatsumi's Clinic was telling us pre-fight that they have been working on Shin's balance. Obviously they view that as a key factor in the outcome of this fight.

Imbula takes one on the button.
Shin scoring well with a low kick there.
Shin moves out of range as Imbula throws a body kick.

A little jabbing left from Shin on the counter but it doesn't find it's target.

Imbula swung with a counter right hand that didn't connect.

Imbula shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Shin is trying to defend but Imbula finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.

Well, if Imbula is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.

Shin escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Imbula gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Imbula has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

Imbula trying to control the position from guard on top but Shin is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Imbula stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Shin swivels though and keeps the full guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Cheik Imbula will probably get the nod.

and Shin cracks him with a counter punch right on the button.
Shin moves out of range as Imbula throws a body kick.

and Shin counters with a nice kick to the body.
Shin missing with a left hand there. Imbula was out of range so wasted energy throwing that one.

Shin avoids a low kick by using good footwork.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Imbula was looking to counter that move with a punch but didn't quite pull the trigger.
Lao Shin seems to be getting the better of the standup.

Imbula drops his hands momentarily and Shin takes advantage with a crisp shot to the head.

Shin scores with a sloppy punch to the body. Not much technique there but it did the business.

Good leg kick by Shin there. It's the ones that make that thud noise that hurt and that was an almighty thud.

Imbula tried to score with a low kick but Shin checks it.
It seemed like Shin was going to counter with the hook but didn't fully commit to it.

and Shin makes him pay by landing a nice hook to the body before moving out of range.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Shin fakes a jab and throws a low kick but Imbula checks it well.
Shin slips in close and lands a nice hook before moving back out of range.

Shin turns his hip over beautifully as he lands a nice leg kick.

Shin connects with a looping left hand that seems like it dazed Imbula momentarily.
Imbula throws a leg kick but he was too far away and it doesn't land.
Shin looks to land a left hand but Imbula moved out of range nicely.
Imbula quickly followed up with a counter body kick but doesn't connect.
Shin looks for the body kick but Imbula saw that one coming.
Shin takes a step back and watches a body kick go sailing past his mid section.
Imbula tries to land a front kick but Shin steps back. That was a bit too telegraphed.
Shin throws out a counter right but Imbula avoids it with no problem.

And an attempted straight right on the counter from Shin! But no joy.
Shin looks to throw the jab but Imbula is out of range.
Imbula displays some good footwork, moving neatly out of range as Shin throws out the jab.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.

Lao Shin showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. This is the final round!

Imbula throws a solid leg kick but Shin takes the impact on his shin and smiles at Imbula.

Shin is the aggressor but that punch slipped nicely by Imbula.

Imbula uses good head movement to avoid the hook from Shin.

Imbula stumbles momentarily as he takes a strong leg kick from Shin.
Shin throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land.

Shin rushes in with a sloppy looking punch
and Imbula makes him pay by landing a nice hook to the body before moving out of range.
Shin swings for the body but Imbula moves out of range.

Shin replies with a solid counter kick to the body but Imbula blocks it well.
Imbula throws a low kick but his opponent is out of range.
Shin is clearly trying to counter these attacks from Imbula with a body shot.
Imbula dips down and scores with a jab to the body.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Shin moves forwards but Imbula connects with a nice, crisp jab.
Imbula uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Shin.

Imbula jabs Shin right on the nose. Shin blinks but takes it well.
Imbula throws a big shot that misses.
Imbula scores with a jab to the jaw of his opponent.
Imbula tries a low kick but Shin avoids it.
Shin on the wrong end of a nice low kick. He's acting like it's no big deal but he doesn't want to take many more of those.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Imbula throws a lazy right hand but Shin sees it coming a mile off and sidesteps it easily.
Shin getting the better of the striking in that exchange.
Imbula throws a mid kick that lands with a slap.
Imbula avoids a kick to the body.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Cheik Imbula.
I think Imbula has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
