PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Brian Jones (ranked 558 p4p, 64 weight class) and Timur Frunze (ranked 817 p4p, 100 weight class). Jones comes to the cage accompanied by Take my hand. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 26 - 21 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Brian Jones!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 14 - 8 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Timur Frunze!
The judges for this bout are Jack Bonds, and Don Winkell.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Jones drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.
Jones trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
Jones trying to control the position from guard on top but Frunze is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
We've been hearing that Jones has been drilling a lot of ground and pound in training, so let's see if he get the finish.
Frunze really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Jones. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Frunze looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
Jones trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
Jones slips effortlessly into side control - very nice.

Jones wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Frunze, who protects the arm well.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Jones is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Frunze knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.

Jones wants to lay and pray for a moment but Frunze keeps working.

Jones swings around for an armbar but Frunze sees it coming a mile off and turns beautifully into Jones's guard.
Frunze told us pre-fight that he has been working on his escapes in training. Let's see if he can call on some of his new skills to get back to his feet.
Jones has a closed guard, preventing Frunze from standing up.
Frunze won't allow Jones to sweep him here.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

Jones working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Frunze doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Frunze manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Frunze is looking to stand up but Jones won't let him.

Frunze avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Jones had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Frunze defends it easily.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.


Jones has a takedown stuffed.
Jones shoots in looking for a takedown. Frunze tries to sprawl out of it but Jones keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Frunze manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Frunze looks to land a left hand but Jones moved out of range nicely.
Jones appeared to be looking to counter that last move with a leg kick.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Frunze throws a low kick but it's checked well by Jones.
Jones on the wrong end of a nice jab.
Frunze dips to his left and cracks Jones with an uppercut!

Jones wants to land a leg kick but Frunze is out of range.
And Frunze responds with a good body kick, but Jones manages to step out the way in time.
Jones drops his hands momentarily and Frunze takes advantage with a crisp shot to the head.
Jones shoots in for a double leg but Frunze sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Brian Jones. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Frunze displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Jones.
Both fighters are looking to counter, which isn't making for the most exciting fight in the world.

Jones needs to keep his hands up - Frunze had a free shot at his head there.

Jones walks straight into a jab right on the nose. That one stung - he's blinking and trying to clear his head.

Jones shoots in looking for a takedown. Frunze tries to sprawl out of it but Jones keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Frunze manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.

Frunze works his jab well there, keeping his opponent at a distance.

Brian Jones seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Frunze swings and misses with a hook to the body.

Jones shoots and misses
and Frunze connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Frunze turns his hip over beautifully as he lands a nice leg kick.
Jones takes a thudding leg kick, right into the meat of the thigh.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Timur Frunze showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's time! Jones's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. This is the final round!


Jones looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.

Jones dives in and grabs Frunze's left leg, looking for a takedown. Frunze pushes down on Jones's head and hops out.

Jones throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Frunze's waist but Frunze gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Jones off to one side.
Jones goes for a double leg but Frunze avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Frunze continues to drive forward.
Frunze is clearly trying to counter these attacks from Jones with a body shot.

Horrible takedown attempt by Jones or perhaps it was just good defense by Frunze, which made it look bad.
Frunze has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Frunze lands with a hook. Jones tried to avoid it but it clipped the top of his head.

and Frunze counters with a lovely straight right hand!
Timur Frunze seems to be getting the better of the standup.
Frunze throws a jab but it's blocked by Jones.

Frunze fakes and then throws a beautiful body shot. Jones looks a bit winded and takes a step backwards to take a breath.
Frunze lands a really nice looking cross but Jones seems unphased.
Jones darts in looking for a takedown but Frunze gets double underhooks and turns Jones into the cage.
Frunze throws a solid leg kick but Jones takes the impact on his shin and smiles at Frunze.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Jones is defended easily by Frunze.

And that's the end of the fight!
Timur Frunze comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Frunze has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
