PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Joe Gatsby (ranked 4215 p4p, 400 weight class) and Johnny Vegas (ranked 2887 p4p, 320 weight class). Vegas has chosen Ace Of Spades by Motorhead as his entrance music. Johnny Vegas told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 18 - 7 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Joe Gatsby!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 12 - 16 - 1, fighting out of Las Vegas, Johnny Vegas!
The judges for this bout are Frank Dennis, Chris Downing and Cecil Peabody.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Gatsby showing good head movement there, avoiding the strikes from Vegas.
Gatsby changes levels looking for a counter takedown but doesn't commit.
Vegas on the wrong end of a decent looking cross there.
Vegas pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Gatsby lands with a cross.
A lazy body kick from Gatsby

and Vegas counters with a shoot takedown into half guard.

Gatsby actively working from the bottom here.
Gatsby wants to get back to full guard.

Vegas is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Gatsby has managed to free his arm - good work.

Vegas is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Gatsby doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Vegas.
Gatsby is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.

Gatsby is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Vegas pulls his head out easily.
Gatsby is not content to let Vegas control the position.

Vegas is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.

Gatsby looking for submissions from an awkward position here.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.

Gatsby is defending against the submission attempts here by Vegas.
Ground and pound from Vegas.

Gatsby is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Vegas pulls his head out easily.
Gatsby is doing well to control the position and prevent Vegas from advancing to side control.

Vegas is working for a kimura from half guard. He's really concentrating on the hold and it's allowed Gatsby to slip a leg under and get back to full guard.

Vegas throws a big right hand that misses.
Gatsby looking for a sweep. Not yet Gatsby, not yet.
Vegas throwing strikes from guard but Gatsby blocks nicely.
Vegas throws an elbow that misses. Gatsby uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Vegas's guard. Nice move by Gatsby!


Vegas is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Gatsby is aware though and is defending well.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Gatsby stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Vegas swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Gatsby advances position into side control!
Vegas is not content to let Gatsby control the position.

Vegas manages to get one leg in to regain half guard.
Vegas manages to get to full guard.
Gatsby is stalling in the full guard.
Gatsby seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Vegas for as long as he can get away with.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Vegas not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Johnny Vegas will probably get the nod.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.


Gatsby throws a lazy uppercut
and Vegas connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.
Vegas tries to bum rush Gatsby with a series of wild strikes but Gatsby uses good footwork to avoid the assault.
A jab lands there for Gatsby.
Gatsby throws a body shot but no joy.
Gatsby misses with a few strikes there.
Gatsby bobs and weaves well there to avoid the strikes.
Vegas misses with a double jab.
Gatsby swings widly with a right hand
and Vegas counters with a left and a right that stings Gatsby.
Gatsby lands a nice hook to Vegas's body. Vegas takes it in his stride and looks to land his own strikes.
Joe Gatsby seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Gatsby looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Vegas is fending him off so far but Gatsby persists. Nope, Vegas circles away and we're back to standing.
Vegas slips a jab and a cross from Gatsby.
Vegas looked like he wanted to counter with a punch but didn't throw it.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Gatsby looks to land a left hand but Vegas moved out of range nicely.
Gatsby avoids the body shot from Vegas.
A big left from Gatsby misses.
Vegas works the jab nicely.
Gatsby throws a hook but Vegas avoids it easily.
Vegas swinging wildly here.
Gatsby was looking to counter that last move with a shot to the body but he didn't commit.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Vegas dodges the punch combination from Gatsby.
Vegas throws a right and a left that Gatsby avoids nicely.
Gatsby jabs Vegas to the body, keeping him at a distance.
Gatsby just misses with a punch to the body.
Gatsby lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Vegas circles away quickly and effectively.
Gatsby throws a body shot but no joy.
Gatsby looks to score with a combo but nothing lands.
Vegas takes an uppercut right on the jaw but it doesn't phase him.
Vegas misses with a wild combination.
The fighters circling - Vegas throws out the jab but it was never going to land.
Vegas goes to the watering hole and comes back with a big thumbs up from the judges as he scores a three punch combo.
Vegas pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Gatsby misses with a kick to the body.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Vegas throws the kick towards the body but Gatsby avoids it.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
A head kick misses from Vegas.
Gatsby's corner calls for a 1, 2 combination and Gatsby duly obliges.
Vegas lands with an overhand left.
Vegas swinging wildly here.
Gatsby is the aggressor but that punch slipped nicely by Vegas.
Gatsby misses the jab.
Vegas throws a counter combo.
Gatsby jabs Vegas right on the nose. Vegas blinks but takes it well.
Gatsby misses with a right hand
and Vegas counters with a three punch combination, finished off with a leg kick. Nice work.
Gatsby throws an overhand right that lands on Vegas's shoulder, as Vegas tries to avoid the shot.
Vegas slips under a jab from Gatsby.

Vegas is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Gatsby's half guard.
Gatsby keeping control of the leg, stopping his opponent passing to mount.

Vegas is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Gatsby defends it well.

Johnny Vegas has got the better of the ground game so far.
Gatsby trying to control but Vegas postures up.

Vegas is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Gatsby doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Vegas.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.

Vegas seems to be looking for submissions.
Vegas is looking to take a break and control but Gatsby is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Gatsby wants to get back to his feet.
Gatsby makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Gatsby.

Vegas is trying to tuck his arms in to keep them safe but Gatsby has managed to isolate one of them and has got a loose triangle. Vegas is looking to defend but Gatsby has done well to lock his legs together - this could be big trouble for Vegas! Gatsby pulls down on the head and a little smile comes across his face - he knows he's got it. Yep, Vegas taps out and this one is all over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:56 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Triangle). Joe Gatsby!
