PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Ze Mane (ranked 5382 p4p, 493 weight class) and Manfred Schmidt (ranked 3580 p4p, 382 weight class). Schmidt has chosen Riders High as his entrance music, which hasn't gone down very well with the crowd. The crowd giving both fighters a great reception on their way into the arena. That's good to see.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Ze Mane!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Manfred Schmidt !
The judges for this bout are Steve Erwin, Ben Hemmingworth and Donatello Bradman.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Excellent takedown into side control there by Mane.
Schmidt struggling a bit here.
Schmidt might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Mane haven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.
Schmidt is trying to escape and get back to his feet.
Schmidt tries to get back to half guard but can't.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Schmidt tries to bench press Mane off him but Mane keeps the position.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Schmidt can't do much from the bottom here.
Mane wants to control but Schmidt is keeping him busy.

Mane tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Mane has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!

Mane stands up and we're back to a striking position.
Mane definitely looks more muscular than last time we saw him fight.
Mane goes for a double leg but Schmidt avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Schmidt continues to drive forward.
Mane closes this distance looking for a takedown but Schmidt circles away.
Schmidt is loading up here, looking for a big counter of his own.
Schmidt throws a nice head kick!

Schmidt clinches with his opponent.
Mane blocks an uppercut.
Schmidt wants to get back to striking at distance but Mane won't allow it.

Schmidt pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Schmidt has been working on his striking defense in training and it's paying off as Mane is landing a low percentage of strikes.

Schmidt darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.
Mane is looking to control Schmidt 's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Mane avoid being mounted?
Schmidt seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Mane does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
Mane wants to control but Schmidt is keeping busy.
Schmidt prevents Mane from improving his position.

Mane trying to keep hold of his opponent's head but Schmidt manages to pass to mount!
Schmidt takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.

Schmidt is standing up, even though he is in mount.

Schmidt closes the distance and clinches.
Schmidt is trying to push Mane away but Mane has him pressed against the cage, so he's going nowhere.
Schmidt gets an overhook and lands an elbow to the side of the head.
A frustrated look appears on Schmidt 's face as he tries to break the clinch.
Mane keeps control of Schmidt as he tries to wriggle out of the double underhooks.

Schmidt pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.

Schmidt rushes Mane and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.
Schmidt wants to break free. God knows he wants to breaaaak freeee.

Schmidt breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Schmidt throws a sloppy head kick

and Mane counters with a shoot takedown. Schmidt fights it but they end up in guard.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Schmidt looking to sweep here. No luck so far.

Schmidt is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Mane shoots in and drives through. Schmidt sprawls well.
Mane misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from Schmidt .
Schmidt throws out a counter right but Mane avoids it with no problem.

Mane gets tackled into the cage by Schmidt . Schmidt maintains the clinch.

Mane changes levels and goes for a takedown here. Schmidt fights it off and pushes away nicely.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Ze Mane. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Mane gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.

Schmidt gets to his feet - Mane follows without any prompting.

Schmidt drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.

Mane is edging up against the cage. He's using the cage to get back to his feet. Nice work there - the fighters are clinched.
Schmidt 's corner are urging him to control the action in the clinch for a moment, rather than mount any serious offense. I'm sure the crowd appreciate those instructions... not.

Schmidt breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.

Schmidt is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Mane's half guard.
Schmidt is keen to just control but Mane is a slippery customer.

Schmidt is working for a kimura but Mane is defending it quite comfortably.

The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Mane wants to get back to full guard but Schmidt has passed into side control.

Schmidt is looking to take a break and control but Mane is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Mane is trying to control Schmidt 's posture but Schmidt avoids it.
Schmidt has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

Schmidt decides to take the fight back to the feet.
Schmidt throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
Schmidt lands with a shot to the body.
Mane looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Schmidt is fending him off so far but Mane persists. Nope, Schmidt circles away and we're back to standing.
Mane chopped to the floor by a nice leg kick but he springs right back up before Schmidt can pounce on him.
Mane shoots in looking for a takedown but Schmidt manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Mane's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.

Mane gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Schmidt to score an easy takedown into full guard.

Mane looking to control the pace of the fight rather than finish it.

Schmidt stands and steps away. Mane gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.

Mane shoots in and bounces Schmidt off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.
Schmidt trying to strike from the bottom but really, it's not the best position to be doing that from!

Manfred Schmidt showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.



Schmidt shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Mane napping and manages to drive through into side control!

Mane is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Schmidt is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.
A lull in the action here as Schmidt stalls from top position.
Mane is looking for a sweep.
You can see the frustration on Mane's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.
Schmidt throws a head kick that looked like it stung.


It looks like Ze Mane has been cut.
Schmidt lands with a kick to the ribs.
Manfred Schmidt seems to be getting the better of the standup.

Schmidt gets in close and instigates a clinch.
A head punch on the inside from Schmidt fails to land.
Mane tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.

Schmidt escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Manfred Schmidt seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Mane shoots in but Schmidt avoids the takedown attempt easily.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Mane fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Schmidt avoids it really well and circles away.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Ze Mane. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Mane takes a body punch but keeps moving.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Mane enables Schmidt to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Mane manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.

Schmidt stands and steps away. Mane gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.
Schmidt throws a sloppy head kick and Mane moves out of range easily.

Schmidt has closed the distance and engaged Mane in a clinch.
An uppercut on the inside fails to land for Schmidt .
Schmidt is looking to break free of the clinch but Mane has double underhooks.
Schmidt wants to push off and get back to the center of the mat but Mane has him pressed against the cage.
Schmidt wants to strike at distance but he can't break free of the clinch.
Schmidt is trying to break free.
Schmidt tries a knee to the head but Mane blocks it.

Mane is trying to trip Schmidt . He has hold of a leg but Schmidt is hopping around, keeping his balance for the moment. Mane persists though and gets the takedown into guard.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Manfred Schmidt comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Schmidt has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
