Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Elroy Barry!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Canelo Avila!
The judges for this bout are Kenichi Hosakawa, Shirou Masuda and Tatsuya Matsuyama.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Avila misses with a head kick.
Avila throws a half hearted mid kick.
Barry appears to be looking for a counter takedown.
Avila lands with a kick to the temple. Barry shrugs as if to say "is that all you've got?"
Avila fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
Barry changes levels looking for a counter takedown but doesn't commit.
Avila looks winded!
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Barry is defended easily by Avila.
Barry sets himself, and Avila steps forward looking for the clinch! Barry avoids it this time.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Avila enables Barry to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Avila manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Avila is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Barry thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
Barry tries to clinch there but Avila circles away.
Avila throws a head kick that misses.
Barry appears to be looking for a big counter.

Barry is trying to work for a single leg takedown but Avila pulls him back up using the underhooks.
Barry wants to take the fight to the mat but Avila manages to get underhooks and keep the fight in the clinch.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Elroy Barry. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Avila is defending well against a takedown attempt.
Barry tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Avila smiles and moves away.
Barry goes for a double leg but Avila avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Avila continues to drive forward.

Avila is loading up here, looking for a big counter of his own.
Avila tries a head kick but it misses.
Well, he's not going to score with shots like that. A lazy body kick attempt from Avila.

Barry has a takedown stuffed.

Barry clinches.
Avila tries to circle away but Barry has him pinned against the cage.
Avila wants to break free. God knows he wants to breaaaak freeee.

Avila manages to break the clinch.
Avila throws a right and a left that both miss.
Barry was looking to counter that last move with a shot to the body but he didn't commit.

Avila throws a right hand that Barry ducks under and follows up with a left that Barry also avoids with ease.

Barry closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.
Avila tries to get back to his feet but has found himself mounted instead. Damn, that's gotta suck.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Barry with some aggressive grappling here. He's looking for submissions here, rather than waiting for the opportunity to counter.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Avila really trying hard to get back to half guard here.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Canelo Avila dominated that round.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!



Barry has managed to clinch.
Barry is looking for a takedown up against the cage. Avila gets underhooks though and prevents the takedown attempt.
Avila wants to break free but Barry has control.

Avila pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.

Barry shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in side control! That's better than Barry was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!
Avila can't do much from the bottom here.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Barry tries for a kimura but Avila is defending well.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Avila is breathing heavily.

A lull in the action here as Barry stalls from top position.

Barry is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Avila is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.

Avila manages to get one leg in to regain half guard.

Barry is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Avila has managed to free his arm - good work.

Barry is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Avila doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Barry.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Avila is looking to get back to full guard here but Barry has managed to pass to side control instead.

Barry thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.
Barry gets to mount! Avila was on the offensive and wasn't defending properly.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Barry will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.

Barry wants to clinch up but Avila keeps it at a distance.
Barry checks a low kick. Bone on bone - not my idea of a good time.
Elroy Barry is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Avila misses with a combination
and Barry counters with a shot to the ribs. That looked like it hurt.

Avila trying to control the position but instead, Barry has worked for underhooks and has pushed Avila into the cage.
Avila takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Barry really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.

The fight stays on the outside here - Barry looks like he's thinking about clinching though.

Barry is trying to pull guard but being pressed up against the cage enables Avila to keep the fight standing.
Barry keeps the fight in the clinch, despite Avila's efforts to push away.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Avila stops a takedown attempt from Barry.
Avila lands a nice uppercut.

Avila pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Canelo Avila is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Avila bobs and weaves and then throws a good body kick.
Barry walks into a straight right hand from Avila.
Barry tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Avila manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
Avila digs a good hook to Barry's body.
Avila throws a right and a left that Barry avoids nicely.
Barry fails with an attempt to clinch.

Avila misses with a jab, cross combination.

Barry drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.
Avila is looking to stand back up... there's a bit of a scramble and Barry dives into side control.

Barry slows the pace down.
Avila is looking to get back to his feet here but Barry is keeping cool and he's managed to take Avila's back.

Barry has the rear naked choke here! This is very bad for Avila! Can he survive? No! He's out! Barry gets to his feet and celebrates with his cornermen. He looks absolutely delighted. In the post fight interviews he takes time to thank his parents and everyone who has believed in him from the start. How sweet.
