Backlund comes to the cage accompanied by Dance Fucker. Gracie has chosen Jiu Jitsu by Smoke Serpent as his entrance music. Both fighters really staring each other down here, as Royce Gracie enters the cage!

And in the blue corner, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, with a TWGC record of 1 wins and 1 losses; Royce Gracie!
The judges for this bout are Yukihiro Yamamoto, Yuuki Gou and Shigeki Sano.


The fighters bow as they face eachother in the middle of the mat and we are under way.

Gracie closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Backlund to the mat! Backlund manages to get full guard.

Gracie wants to pass the guard but Backlund is keeping the position.

Backlund working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Gracie doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Gracie manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Gracie pushes down on Backlund's leg and manages to get into half guard.

Gracie is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Backlund defends it well.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Backlund is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Gracie's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Gracie's back!

Backlund is persistently looking for the submission but Gracie is defending it well.
Gracie trying to control but not successfully.
We've been hearing good reports from Backlund's training camp. Apparently he has been rolling around with some good quality BJJ practitioners and has been sharpening his skills. Let's see if that has an impact on the fight today.

The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now.

Gracie is trying to defend against the choke here but Backlund has an arm under his chin. This one might not last much longer. Backlund Tightens the hold and Gracie taps out furiously! Backlund displays superior BJJ to win the fight.

Bob Backlund decided to go for the less than humble approach in his post fight interview, telling everyone how he is going to conquer the world. The crowd seemed to like it when really that sort of approach could have gone either way.
