PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Chris Buchanan (ranked 2256 p4p, 284 weight class) and Hoaka Kalama (ranked 2473 p4p, 310 weight class). Well, the cameraman is lingering on a pretty young lady for a bit too long there. Keep your eyes on the prize buddy or you'll miss the fighter intros!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 4 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Chris Buchanan!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Hoaka Kalama!
The judges for this bout are Dirk Anderson, Daniel Franklin and David Hoff.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Kalama throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Buchanan's waist but Buchanan gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Kalama off to one side.
Kalama jabbing away but nothing is landing.
Buchanan fails with a takedown attempt from distance.
Kalama drops down looking to force a counter takedown but Buchanan defends it well.
Buchanan tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Kalama was well out of range. Poor timing from Buchanan.

Buchanan shoots in for a double leg but Kalama sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.

Kalama shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Buchanan as he jumps to the side.
Chris Buchanan has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Hoaka Kalama.

Buchanan has been talking about how he's improved his wrestling in the run up to the fight so let's see if that's enough to sway the balance.

The fighters circling - Kalama throws out the jab but it was never going to land.
Kalama bobs and weaves well there to avoid the strikes.

Kalama fails miserably with a takedown attempt.

Buchanan manages to get an easy takedown there - catching Kalama on his heels. He'll look to pass Kalama's guard now, I'm sure.
Buchanan is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Kalama is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Buchanan is aware though and is defending well.

Kalama had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Buchanan defends it easily.
Kalama lands a beautiful sweep and he's now moved into his opponent's guard.

Kalama has gone for a leg lock! Buchanan slips out almost immediately though and dives into Kalama's guard.

Buchanan has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.

Kalama working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Buchanan doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Buchanan manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Kalama has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Buchanan can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

That was a close round but I would say that Chris Buchanan will probably get the nod.

Kalama tries to score a power double leg takedown but Buchanan sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Kalama somewhat.

Kalama tries a counter takedown but it's more of a dummy move, and he uses it to push himself away.

so Buchanan counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.

Buchanan is posturing up here but Kalama has hold of an arm and he's gone for an armbar! Buchanan tries to roll out but it's too tight and Buchanan has to tap! Slick submission there by Kalama!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:50 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Armbar). Hoaka Kalama!
An out of breath Hoaka Kalama thanked his loyal fans in his post fight interview, giving them credit for his success over the course of his career.
