PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Jake Butler (ranked 1792 p4p, 241 weight class) and Aksel Stenger (ranked 1870 p4p, 248 weight class). The crowd seem to be enjoying Stenger's choice of entrance music: Hit2face - Ain't it nice to get hit to the face?. I can't wait for this one - let's get the fighter introductions out of the way and get this one started!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 15 - 8 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Jake Butler!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 25 - 17 - 3, fighting out of Helsinki, Aksel Stenger!
The judges for this bout are Robert Douchet, William Peck and Steve Smith.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Stenger stuns Butler with a nice body shot, before stepping back out of range.
Butler slips a jab from Stenger.
An attempted straight right counter from Butler misses the target.
Stenger feints with a shoulder and throws a nice leg kick to Butler's calf.
Butler takes a body punch that cleary hurt but he's trying not to show any weakness.
Butler shoots and misses
and Stenger counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head.
No luck for Butler with that takedown attempt.
A chopping leg kick lands by Stenger.
Stenger misses with an uppercut

and Butler counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Butler.
Stenger can't keep his opponent in guard - Butler advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Stenger has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Butler is working away from the top position though.

Stenger seems keen to control rather than go for a submission, at least for now.

Butler has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Butler stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Stenger swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Butler loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.

Stenger escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Butler gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.
We've been hearing good reports from Butler's training camp. Apparently he has been rolling around with some good quality BJJ practitioners and has been sharpening his skills. Let's see if that has an impact on the fight today.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Butler stands up over Stenger, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Butler chopped to the floor by a nice leg kick but he springs right back up before Stenger can pounce on him.
Stenger lands a jab to Butler's midsection.
Stenger looks to land a left hand but Butler moved out of range nicely.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Jake Butler will probably get the nod.
Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin!

Stenger scores with a knee to the head.


It looks like Jake Butler has been cut.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Stenger is pressed up against the cage. Butler has hold of a leg and is looking to drag Stenger down to the mat. Stenger avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance.
Aksel Stenger seems to be getting the better of the standup.

and Stenger counters with a stiff right hand.
Stenger is the aggressor but that punch slipped nicely by Butler.

Butler bobs and weaves well there to avoid the strikes.
Butler is looking to counter punch.
Stenger feints and then cracks Butler's leading leg with a nice low kick. He's obviously looking to slow Butler down.
Stenger lands a nice looking body kick.
Stenger misses with an uppercut. Butler saw that one coming.
A slow jab from Stenger misses its intended target.
Stenger scores with a slapping inside leg kick.
Like a baseball bat into the meat of his leg there - nice leg kick by Stenger.
Stenger has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Butler misses with a lunging right hand
and Stenger counters with a straight right hand.
Stenger throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land.
Butler looks to land a right hand but Stenger moved out of range.
Butler doesn't succeed with the takedown
and Stenger counters with a quick right hand to the jaw.
Butler doesn't react quick enough there as he takes a shot to the body.
Butler misses with a lunging right hand
letting Stenger counter with a right hand.

Butler takes a head kick and keeps coming.
This has been an exciting period of action!

Butler is really head hunting here, hardly looking to strike to the body at all.

Butler misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Jake Butler. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Butler throws a knee to the body but it doesn't do much damage.
Stenger taking punishment in the form of punches.

Stenger manages to land a sweep and he's now on top! Lovely Jiu Jitsu!

Stenger trying to stand up but can't free himself from Butler's guard.
Stenger looking to sit in guard and control but Butler gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Stenger is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Butler won't allow Stenger to get back to his feet.
Stenger is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Aksel Stenger showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. This is the final round!

Stenger with a nice looking leg kick. You could hear that one land in a back row.
Stenger looks shocked there as he takes a right hand to the temple.
Stenger goes to the watering hole and comes back with a big thumbs up from the judges as he scores a three punch combo.

Stenger loads up on a big right hand but Butler slips the punch.
Stenger punishes Butler's body with a nice straight punch.
Butler misses with an uppercut
and Stenger counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head.
Butler misses with a takedown attempt
and Stenger counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw.
Stenger misses with a jab, cross combination.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Stenger lands a leg kick. The shin dug right into the meat of the thigh.

Butler takes a shot to the body in his stride.

Stenger moves into the clinch successfully.
Butler is looking for a takedown.
Stenger lands a left hand that snaps the head of Butler backwards.
Stenger misses with the head strike.
Stenger lands on the inside with an uppercut.
Stenger with an attempt at a knee that misses.
Butler is hobbling a little on that front leg after taking quite a few leg kicks so far in this fight.
Butler has dropped down and is looking to force the takedown but it's defended by Stenger after a bit of a struggle.

Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
A right hook to the body lands for Stenger.
Butler can't get the takedown.

Stenger scores a nice knee to the body.

Stenger is fighting off a takedown attempt but Butler is just too persistent for him and manages to trip Stenger to the mat. Stenger regains guard as soon as the fighters hit the mat.
Stenger is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Stenger tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Stenger wants to control but Butler passes easily into half guard.
Butler blocks the strikes from Stenger.
Butler is thwarting Stenger's attempts to control the position.
Butler looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Stenger with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.

The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Butler connects with a nice short shot to Stenger's temple.
Stenger is looking to improve his position.
Butler winds up and cracks Stenger with a swinging punch to the side of the head.

Stenger pushes Butler off and gets back to his feet.
Stenger misses with a straight right.
It looked like Butler wanted to counter with a hook but didn't fully commit.
Stenger ducks under a wild hook from Butler.
Good exchange - Stenger coming out on top.
Butler lands with a cross to side of his opponent's head.
Butler throws a lazy right hand but Stenger sees it coming a mile off and sidesteps it easily.
Stenger moves into range and lands a nice body kick.

Butler misses with a takedown
and Stenger counters with a shot to the ribs. That looked like it hurt.
Stenger works the jab nicely.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Stenger fakes the leg kick and cracks Butler in the body.
Butler takes a really solid shot there but just smiles back and shrugs his shoulders.
Stenger throws a right hand that misses

and Butler counters with a nice double leg into side control. Stenger won't be happy with that.

Butler working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.
Stenger is looking for a sweep.

And that's the end of the fight!
Aksel Stenger comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Stenger has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
