Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Arthur Menezes (ranked 601 p4p, 81 weight class) and Mauro Carnera (ranked 1956 p4p, 260 weight class). Carnera has chosen Bad Religion - Infected as his entrance music. Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 12 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Arthur Menezes!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 9 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Mauro Carnera!
The judges for this bout are Damien Edna, Steve Erwin and Ben Hemmingworth.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Menezes lands a nice hook to Carnera's body. Carnera takes it in his stride and looks to land his own strikes.

Menezes misses with an uppercut
and Carnera counters with a nice body shot.
Menezes lands the left hand.
Menezes tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.

and Carnera counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head.

Menezes is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Carnera's half guard.
Menezes trying to mount his opponent but Carnera defends it.
Carnera has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Menezes is working away from the top position though.
Carnera makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Carnera.
Carnera has control of Menezes's left arm, preventing Menezes from doing any damage.

Menezes stands up over Carnera, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head.
Menezes wants to pass the guard but Carnera is keeping the position.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Menezes accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
Carnera looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
We've been hearing good reports from Menezes's training camp. Apparently he has been rolling around with some good quality BJJ practitioners and has been sharpening his skills. Let's see if that has an impact on the fight today.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Menezes wants to pass the guard but Carnera is keeping the position.
Carnera avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.

Carnera is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.

Menezes drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Menezes jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.

Menezes is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Carnera has managed to free his arm - good work.
Menezes is trying to control the action in half guard but Carnera is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.
Menezes lands a big shot. The thud that echoes around the arena is like music to the fans' ears.
Carnera is looking to control Menezes's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Carnera avoid being mounted?

Menezes stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Carnera swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Menezes is fighting to break Carnera's control of his arms but Carnera is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.

Menezes has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Carnera avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
Menezes trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
Menezes is working hard here to advance position.
Carnera controls Menezes momentarily but Menezes frees himself.
We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.

Menezes drops back looking for a leg! Carnera is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Carnera manages to kick Menezes off! Menezes jumps back into Carnera's guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Menezes slips nicely into half guard.
Menezes is pressing down on Carnera's thigh, looking to free his foot. Carnera is holding on for now.
Carnera is trying to get back to full guard.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.

Menezes looks to land a right hand but Carnera moved out of range.
Menezes throws a jab but it's blocked by Carnera.
Carnera appears to be waiting to throw a counter punch to the body.
Menezes defending well as Carnera loads up on a big left hand.
Menezes appears to be looking for a counter takedown.
Menezes darts in looking for a takedown but Carnera gets double underhooks and turns Menezes into the cage.

Carnera throws a low kick, looking for Menezes's leg but Menezes calmly moves out of range.
Arthur Menezes seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Carnera uses decent footwork to sidestep a right hand from Menezes.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Nice uppercut lands for Menezes. That snapped Carnera's head back.
Carnera takes a jab right on the nose. That must have hurt but he shrugs his shoulders and looks to return the favor.

Carnera gets caught flat footed, as Menezes shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.

Carnera has momentary wrist control but Menezes slips an elbow through the middle.

Menezes stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Carnera swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Menezes tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Menezes has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!

Menezes is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Carnera is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.
The strikes coming from Menezes are missing the target in this wave of attacks.
Menezes has knee on belly and now moves to full mount! Trouble for Carnera!

Menezes looking for a guillotine from mount but Carnera is having none of it.
Carnera is in all sorts of trouble here.
Carnera is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.
Menezes wants to take Carnera's back but he can't do it this time.

Carnera really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Menezes. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Menezes with some aggressive grappling here. He's looking for submissions here, rather than waiting for the opportunity to counter.

Menezes is working for a guillotine from mount but Carnera frees his head quite easily.

Menezes is going oldschool here, as he tries to force Carnera to tap using a forearm choke. This isn't 1993 though, so Carnera shrugs it off.

Menezes is working on an americana here. Ooh, that looks pretty nasty! Nope, Carnera has managed to escape the submission attempt.
Carnera tries to hold on but Menezes pushes him away.

That's time! Menezes's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. The crowd applaud as we get ready to start the final round!

Carnera uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Menezes.
Menezes throws a hook but Carnera blocks it.
A telegraphed right hand from Menezes misses the target.
Menezes tries to clinch but Carnera moves out of range.
Carnera was about to counter that last move with a leg kick but changes his mind.
Carnera looks to land a combination but Menezes avoids it well.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Menezes shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Carnera pinned against the cage. Carnera gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
Carnera lets it all go there with a big combo counter but none of the punches connected.
Jab, jab by Menezes - just one landing.

Menezes misses the shot to the body.
Carnera throws a counter combo.
Menezes closes the distance and lands a one-two.
Menezes misses with a takedown
and Carnera counters with a quick right hand to the jaw.
Carnera walks straight into an uppercut. Luckily it didn't land flush.
Menezes is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Carnera can do to turn this around?
Menezes comes forward and lands a shot to the body, then darts back out of range.
Menezes looks to land a right hand but Carnera moved out of range.
Menezes throws a jab to the body, straight down the pipe. Boom. That sent Carnera stumbling backwards but he manages to regain his composure quickly.
Menezes lands a nice hook to Carnera's body. Carnera takes it in his stride and looks to land his own strikes.
Mauro Carnera has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

Menezes lands a right hook to the body.
Menezes lands a vicious shot with the stealth of a sniper and the strength of a viper. Are vipers that strong? I can think of lots of things that are stronger than a viper - not many rhyme with sniper though.
Carnera throws a series of punches but Menezes moves out of range.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

Menezes is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.
Menezes wants to free his trapped foot but Carnera is holding on for dear life with his legs.
Carnera is trying to maintain the position but Menezes is very close to passing his half guard.
Arthur Menezes is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

Well Menezes has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
