PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Burt Shaffer (ranked 24814 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jesse Aldo (ranked 5152 p4p, 0 weight class). On his way into the cage it seems that Burt Shaffer has been attacked by a crazed fan! It looks like it might have been the just bleed guy! Luckily Burt Shaffer seems to be OK! I thought that lunatic was in prison!?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Burt Shaffer!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Jesse Aldo!
The judges for this bout are Alexandre Firmino, Matheus Silva and Luis Engracia.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Shaffer scores with a nice head shot.

Aldo changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Shaffer looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.

Shaffer sneaks out the side door and pushes Aldo away - he's back to his feet. The crowd show their appreciation for the escape.

Jesse Aldo seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Shaffer has closed the distance and engaged Aldo in a clinch.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Aldo drops down for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Aldo is defending well against a takedown attempt.
A frustrated look appears on Shaffer's face as he tries to break the clinch.
Shaffer tries a shoulder strike but it doesn't do any damage.
Shaffer lands a hook that snaps the head of Aldo backwards.
Shaffer throws a knee to the head but misses.

Aldo pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.

Shaffer drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.
Shaffer wants to stand but Aldo has his arm trapped.

Aldo pushes Shaffer away and creates a bit of space to escape. He's almost out here... but no, Shaffer gets a good hold of his legs and remains firmly in side control.
Aldo throws a couple of strikes even though he's not really in a good position to do so.
Aldo is moving his hips around well on the bottom and has managed to get back to half guard.
Aldo is trying to stand up here but Shaffer is controlling him well.

Shaffer is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.
The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.
Shaffer is controlling the pace.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Aldo keeping control of the leg, stopping his opponent passing to mount.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.
Shaffer throws a feint and then finishes with a kick to the body.

Shaffer instigates a clinch.
Shaffer wants a takedown but no success here.

Shaffer jumps guard and drags Aldo to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back.
Shaffer wants to stand up but Aldo is controlling him.
Shaffer trying desperately to get back to his feet here but he's not having any joy at all. He's going to tire himself out if he's not careful.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

The fight stays on the outside here - Shaffer looks like he's thinking about clinching though.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

Aldo gets to the clinch - let's see what his plan is here.

Shaffer has clasped his hands together around Aldo's back... aaand, he's got a takedown into side control. Nicely done.

Shaffer seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Aldo for as long as he can get away with.
You can see the frustration on Aldo's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.

Shaffer closes the distance and clinches up with Aldo, looking for a takedown. Shaffer pushes Aldo against the cage but Aldo circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Despite the aggression on Aldo's face he doesn't fully commit to the counter.

Shaffer shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat.
Aldo is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Aldo has a butterfly guard looking to sweep but Shaffer has passed into side control.
Aldo is looking for a sweep.
Shaffer remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while.
I wouldn't like to be where Aldo is right now.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Shaffer wants to stand but Aldo is controlling his arm.
Aldo is trying to improve his position.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.

Shaffer drives through and clinches with Aldo against the cage.
Aldo is pressed up against the cage. Shaffer has hold of a leg and is looking to drag Aldo down to the mat. Aldo avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance.

Aldo closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Shaffer did well to prevent Aldo getting side control.

Aldo is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Shaffer is just riding it out for now. Aldo eventually gives up the hold.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
The referee calls for the fighters to work.
Aldo wants to take a breather but Shaffer is having none of it.

Aldo misses with a body kick.
It looked like Shaffer was looking amped, ready to throw a big counter but didn't commit.
Aldo looks to land a combination but Shaffer avoids it well.
Shaffer fires out a quick counter leg kick but Aldo just manages to avoid it.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Aldo is defended easily by Shaffer.

That was a close second round but I would say that Burt Shaffer will probably get the nod.

Aldo closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.
Shaffer shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Aldo as he jumps to the side.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Aldo shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Shaffer manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.

Shaffer has scooted to the edge of the canvas and used the cage to get back to his feet. Aldo has stuck on his opponent and is forcing him back against the cage.

And that's the end of the fight!
Burt Shaffer showed his dominance in that final round.
Well Shaffer has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
