PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Billy The Bastard (ranked 399 p4p, 62 weight class) and Joel Romero (ranked 550 p4p, 92 weight class). The Bastard comes into the arena with King of Kings - Motorhead blaring out of the sound system. Well, I have no idea who's going to take this one!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the light heavyweight championship of the world!
Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 5 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Billy The Bastard!
And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 10 - 1 - 0, fighting out of New York, Joel Romero!
The judges for this bout are Richard Clark, James Glass and Sam Margolis.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
The Bastard throws a right hand that misses

and Romero holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.

The Bastard manages to break the clinch.
The Bastard misses with a hook. Romero ducked under it nicely.

Romero clinches with his opponent.

The Bastard escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
The Bastard throws an ugly left hook that misses

and Romero counters with a takedown into side control! That could mean trouble for The Bastard!
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
The Bastard tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Romero wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
Romero looking to punish the body of his opponent here but The Bastard is avoiding damage well.
An elbow from Romero crashes against the mat.
Romero creates some space and throws a big elbow, but The Bastard sees it coming and moves his head just enough to avoid the strike.
Romero trying to control the action but The Bastard is working from the bottom.
Romero content to control the pace. The referee will try and keep them active though.

That's one minute gone in the round.
The Bastard wants to get back to his feet.
Romero slows the pace down.
Romero works to advance to full mount. The Bastard defends for a few seconds but eventually he succumbs.

It looks like Billy The Bastard has been cut.
The Bastard's coaches at Far-Q Fight Club have been working on his defensive grappling in preparation for this fight so let's see if he can get out of this tricky position.
Romero tries to control but The Bastard wriggling away.

Romero is thinking about an arm triangle here, looking to tighten it up before moving to side control. The Bastard can see it coming though and defends well with a couple of strikes to the head and some good arm positioning.
Romero landing punches.

The Bastard is working to get back to half guard.
The Bastard is in a horrible position here, under a barrage of strikes, he's managing to avoid any damage.
Romero avoids the attempt from The Bastard to control.
The Bastard tries to reverse the position but Romero maintains control.
Romero lands an elbow that was bordering on illegal but the referee lets it go with a warning.
Poor strikes thrown by Romero there. More accuracy and less frantic strikes would help!
The Bastard tries to hold on but Romero postures up.

Romero goes for an armbar but he's not got it… The Bastard turns into him and now he's in Romero's guard.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Romero is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Romero has a closed guard, preventing anything of note from happening. Perhaps he's looking to stall.
The Bastard preventing the sweep.
Romero is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

Romero looking for submissions from the bottom but instead The Bastard passes into half guard.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
The Bastard prevents Romero from improving his position.
Romero has found himself in a tricky position here. He's been working his transitions in training so let's see if he can work his way out of it.
The Bastard is figuring out what he wants to do next.
The Bastard wants to stand but Romero has hold of a leg and an arm, so he's trapped for now.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Romero is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Joel Romero dominated that round.
The cut man is working on Billy The Bastard's cut.
That's time! The Bastard's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.


No luck with that takedown attempt from Romero.
The Bastard misses with a looping right.
The Bastard misses with an uppercut.
Romero drops down looking to force a counter takedown but The Bastard defends it well.
The Bastard throws a left and a right that both miss

and Romero counters with a nice double leg into half guard.
The Bastard is trying to stand back up but Romero is controlling him

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
The Bastard is looking to improve his position.
The Bastard is concentrating on defense, preventing Romero from advancing position.

Romero is working hard to pass the guard. He's done it - he's now in full mount! Trouble for The Bastard!
Romero tries to control but The Bastard wriggling away.
Romero has his opponent pinned against the cage, landing some nasty ground and pound that is really making a bit of a mess out of The Bastard's face.
Romero postures up and cracks his opponent a couple of times before moving back into close ground control. The Bastard looks a forlorn figure.
Joel Romero has got the better of the ground game so far.
The Bastard holding onto his opponent's waist for dear life, as Romero tries to land some strikes to get him to release his grip.
The Bastard tries to reverse the position but Romero maintains control.
Romero wants to control the pace but The Bastard is squirming around nicely.
Romero lands a couple of nice shots there from mount.


Billy The Bastard's cut is getting worse.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

Romero thuds his fist into the canvas! Oooouch!
The crowd growing excited in anticipation of a finish here! Right on cue, Romero cracks his opponent with a massive right hand that draws loud cheers!
Romero can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as The Bastard is looking to escape.
The Bastard is really trying hard to get back to his feet.
Romero avoids the attempt from The Bastard to control.

Jeez, Billy The Bastard's cut is really nasty now. The referee must be thinking about getting that checked.

The referee calls the doctor in to look at Billy The Bastard's cut. Oh no, the doctor has called an end to the bout!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:23 of round 2, we have a winner by way of TKO (Cut). Joel Romero!
Joel Romero is the new light heavyweight champion!
Joel Romero seemed lost for words in his post fight interview but he remembered to thank his fans and directed everyone to his website.
