PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Billy Beretti (ranked 6938 p4p, 0 weight class) and Long John (ranked 3379 p4p, 0 weight class). Beretti kept the crowd waiting but all that was forgotten when his ring entrance music started. The incomparable musical genius that is Mambo Italiano by Dean Martin. Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Billy Beretti!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Long John!
The judges for this bout are Trevor Gratis, Alec Ball and William Peck.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Beretti with a poor takedown

and John moves into the clinch.

John has hold of one of Beretti's legs. Beretti is fighting the takedown attempt but John gets the trip and lands the takedown into guard.
Beretti pulls John in to control the position.
Beretti manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. John manages to get himself to full guard.

Beretti stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. John swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Beretti looking to sit in guard and control but John gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

John controls the pace of the fight for a moment.
John trying to control but Beretti is working from the bottom.
John must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Beretti is trying to control the position from the bottom.

Beretti has his foot on John's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. John works his way back into a safe position though.

Beretti isolates an arm and boxes in a triangle. John stacks Beretti on his neck as he steps over and passes to the side. He's now in a much more dominant position where he can look to do some serious damage. Nice move by John!
John in side control, just content to control the action for now.
John fails to land a wild elbow strike.
John tries to advance to mount but can't.
Beretti managing to avoid any damage from the strikes thrown by John.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
John is looking to take a break and control but Beretti is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Beretti wants to control but John postures up.
Beretti looks to be in better condition than last time we saw him fight. Obviously he's been working hard on his cardio.
Beretti is trying to get back to half guard. He's pushing on John's leg. He's managed it. Nice work.

A bit of a lull in the action here.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Beretti tries to get back to half guard but can't.

Beretti moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.
John engaging in some classic timewasting tactics.

Beretti throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around John's waist but John gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Beretti off to one side.
Beretti misses with a takedown attempt - John sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
Beretti shoots in looking for a takedown but John manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Beretti's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Billy Beretti. That's going to take a lot out of him.

John clinches up against the cage.

Beretti pulls guard successfully.

Beretti working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. John doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. John manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
John wants to control from the top but Beretti keeps moving.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
John wants to take a breather but Beretti is having none of it.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

John looking to pass the half guard. Not this time.
Beretti is doing well to avoid being mounted. He's controlling the position at the moment.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.

Beretti shoots in for a takedown but John shows good takedown defense.

John closes the distance and clinches.

John works for the underhooks and manages to get a trip takedown into guard.
John has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Beretti keeping moving, preventing John from controlling successfully.
John stopping the sweep attempt from Beretti.
John trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.

John got a little sloppy there for a moment and Beretti has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, John has managed to get both his arms back between Beretti's legs - danger averted.
Beretti controls John momentarily but John frees himself.

John is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! Beretti is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! Beretti has escaped and now he's on top!

John wants to sweep here but Beretti controlling him for the moment.

Long John showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! This is the final round!

John is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Beretti had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. John defends it easily.
John content to strike from guard, landing some decent shots.
John scores with a decent looking elbow strike.
John is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.

John drops back for a leg but he's not going to get it - he lets go and Beretti dives on top into guard.


Beretti is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.

Beretti sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed John's guard.
John avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Beretti.
Beretti trying to control the action but John is working from the bottom.

Beretti is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so John is just riding it out for now. Beretti eventually gives up the hold.

Beretti looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.

Beretti thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed John's head.

Long John comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well John has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.

Our winner, Long John, made sure he spent some time buttering up the crowd during his post fight interview, which will no doubt bring him a few more fans.
