PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Romeo Harris (ranked 5413 p4p, 524 weight class) and Ho Hek (ranked 5418 p4p, 408 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Romeo Harris!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Ho Hek!
The judges for this bout are Valeri Chadov, Sergei Dronov and Vladimir Khabensky.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Hek closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.
Hek wants to control but Harris is keeping him busy.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Hek is in a good position here but he's just trying to control... And he's not even managing to do that successfully.
Harris is trying to improve his position.
Harris tries to strike but it doesn't land.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Hek trying to control the action but Harris is working from the bottom.

Harris wants to get back to his feet.
Harris manages to land a sweep and he's now on top! Lovely Jiu Jitsu!

Harris stands and throws Hek's legs to the side, diving into side control.

The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Harris is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Hek knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.

Harris decides to stand back up.

Harris pulls Hek in to control the position.
Hek lands a couple of elbows.
Harris is trying to control the position but Hek postures up.
Hek wants to pass the guard but Harris is keeping the position.

Hek avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
Hek stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Harris swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Hek decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Harris, up you get!
Nice takedown defense from Hek. No joy for Harris on that attempt.
Hek shoots for a double leg takedown but Harris sprawls well. He's pushed Hek's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
Hek looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Harris is fending him off so far but Hek persists. Nope, Harris circles away and we're back to standing.
Harris misses with a takedown attempt - Hek sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Romeo Harris. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Harris forces Hek back against the cage and clinches.
Harris gets underhooks to prevent Hek's takedown attempt.
Hek wants a takedown.
Hek tries a knee to the head but he's missed.

Harris has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Hek avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.
Harris on the defensive, avoiding the knees to the body.

Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Harris is trying to break the clinch but Hek has him pressed against the cage.
Hek has dropped down and is looking to force the takedown but it's defended by Harris after a bit of a struggle.
Harris has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. Hek is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet.
A frustrated look appears on Harris's face as he tries to break the clinch.

Hek is looking for a takedown up against the cage. Harris gets underhooks though and prevents the takedown attempt.
Harris has had enough of the clinch but Hek keeps him there for the moment.
Harris is working on a leg, looking for a takedown but Hek is defending well.

Hek has dropped down and is working for a takedown. Harris is trying to keep an underhook but Hek manages to get the takedown into half guard.
Hek with a momentary lay and pray from half guard.
Hek is looking to take a break and control but Harris is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Harris holds on for dear life, maintaining half guard for now.
Harris wants to sweep but Hek has passed to side control!

Hek decides to take the fight back to the feet.
Harris closes the distance and clinches up with Hek, looking for a takedown. Harris pushes Hek against the cage but Hek circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Hek unleashes a big counter combination but Harris bobs and weaves and avoids any damage.
Some wild striking there from Hek.
Harris changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Hek tries to avoid it but Harris manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Hek to the ground. Hek escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.

Hek fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Harris, pushing him back against the cage.
Harris is looking to take this one to the mat.
Hek has Harris pressed up against the cage and is working for takedown. Harris manages to improve position though and keeps the fight standing.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Harris jumps guard but Hek stands there with Harris around his waist. Harris gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.

Hek gets the body lock takedown. After a quick scramble, Harris regains guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Ho Hek showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business. This is the final round!



Hek fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Harris sprawls well initially but Hek persists and gets the takedown into half guard.
Harris is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Hek is looking to stand up but he'll have to free his leg first. Instead, Harris manages to get to full guard.

Harris is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Hek defends well.

Hek got a little sloppy there for a moment and Harris has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Hek has managed to get both his arms back between Harris's legs - danger averted.
Hek passes easily into side control. Nice work.

Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Harris manages to get back to half guard.
Hek content to control rather than advance.
Hek is trying to control the action in half guard but Harris is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.
Hek scores with a couple of good hammerfists.
Hek is just sitting in half guard, waiting for something to happen.
Harris is not content to let Hek control the position.
Ho Hek has got the better of the ground game so far.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Well, if Hek is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.
Hek is trying to control the action in half guard but Harris is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.
Hek stalling away here and it's allowed Harris to slip out his trapped foot and regain full guard.
Hek really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Harris. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.

Hek shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Harris but Harris pushes him off and we're back to square one.

Harris darts in and clinches Hek up against the cage.

Harris has hold of one of Hek's legs. Hek is fighting the takedown attempt but Harris gets the trip and lands the takedown into guard.

Harris is pushing down on Hek's leg trying to pass to half guard. Hek is fighting to maintain full guard but Harris has managed to sneak the leg through.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Hek can do anything to dispel that myth.
Hek is doing well to control the position and prevent Harris from advancing to side control.
Harris trying to control the action but Hek is working from the bottom.

Hek is looking to improve his position.
Harris content to sit in half guard and control for a moment.
Hek moves into full guard.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Romeo Harris.
I think Harris has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
