PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Hamza Keita (ranked 3370 p4p, 401 weight class) and Mike Smith (ranked 2593 p4p, 0 weight class). Keita's entrance music is Secka - Pointure . A fine choice. Smith has chosen Therion - Sitra Ahra as his entrance music. Mike Smith told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 6 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Hamza Keita!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 37 - 39 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Mike Smith!
The judges for this bout are Ian Loll, Gregory Folan and Robert Douchet.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Keita looking for a takedown here - he's got it.
Keita trying to control the position from guard on top but Smith is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Keita works a leg free and moves into half guard.
Keita wants to take a breather but Smith is having none of it.
Smith wants to get back to his feet.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Keita wants to work for an arm triangle but Smith is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.

Keita is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Smith has managed to free his arm - good work.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Keita is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Smith is just riding it out for now. Keita eventually gives up the hold.
Smith tries to roll over but Keita keeps him under control.

Smith makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Smith.
Keita trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.

Keita drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Smith manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Keita has Smith in his guard.


Keita is active off his back here, looking for submissions.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Keita striking off his back but it's not causing Smith any problems.
Smith trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.
Keita seems to have improved his submission grappling technique since last time we saw him. Let's see if he can pull off a submission.

Keita had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Smith defends it easily.

Keita is looking for a triangle but Smith pushes his legs off easily.
Smith stays in close to Keita's body and controls the position.
Keita looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Smith is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.

Keita is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Smith is aware though and is defending well.
Smith controls from within his opponent's guard.

Keita looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.

Keita working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Smith doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Smith manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Smith looking to control the position here, rather than advance.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Keita looking to sweep here. No luck so far.

Keita has his foot on Smith's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Smith works his way back into a safe position though.

Keita keeping moving, preventing Smith from controlling successfully.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
Keita throws a hook to the side of Smith's head but Smith sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Keita tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Smith swivels and escapes.
A head kick misses from Smith.
Keita shoots in but Smith avoids the takedown attempt easily.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Hamza Keita dominated that round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.

Smith tries a quick counter leg kick but Keita is wise to it.
Keita throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Smith scores with a nice body kick.
Keita changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Smith tries to avoid it but Keita manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Smith to the ground. Smith escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Keita moves in looking to clinch but Smith pushes him off.
Smith raises up his leg as if looking to counter with a high kick.
Keita shoots in but doesn't get the takedown
and Smith counters with a nice uppercut.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Hamza Keita. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Keita moves forwards but Smith connects with a nice, crisp jab.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Smith lands with a cross to side of his opponent's head.
Keita lands an overhand right.
Keita takes a head kick and keeps coming.
Smith connects with a lovely right hand, straight down the pipe.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Keita tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Smith manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
Mike Smith is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Keita slips under a jab.
Smith lands a big head kick that sends Keita to the canvas! Smith follows up with strikes from the mount that forces the ref to step in and stop the fight!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:20 of round 2, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Mike Smith!
