PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Douglas Dannis (ranked 4500 p4p, 0 weight class) and Joe Stevens (ranked 5728 p4p, 0 weight class). Stevens has chosen Woke Up This Morning as his entrance music. Joe Stevens is the more experienced fighter, so let's see if that makes a difference tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Douglas Dannis!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 6 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Joe Stevens!
The judges for this bout are Timothy Bukovac, Frank Antenori and Don Winkell.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Stevens gets a double leg takedown into Dannis's guard.
Stevens stopping the sweep attempt from Dannis.

Stevens has gone for a leg lock! Dannis slips out almost immediately though and dives into Stevens's guard.


Stevens throws his legs up looking to secure a triangle. Oh, that looks pretty tight, I gotta say! Dannis escapes and throws Stevens's legs to the side, diving into side control!
Dannis is looking to take a break and control but Stevens is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Dannis prevents Stevens from escaping the position.

Stevens tries to buck Dannis off but Dannis is having none of it.
Stevens is putting a lot of effort into getting back to his feet here.

Dannis is looking to take a break and control but Stevens is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Stevens wants to control but Dannis is keeping busy.
Stevens is looking to get full guard. It looks like he might be successful but at the last minute Dannis jumps into side control!
Stevens tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Dannis wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.

Stevens prevents Dannis from improving position.
Stevens dodges the ground and pound from Dannis.
Stevens is positioning himself to get back to half guard.
Stevens can't do much from the bottom here.
Stevens sneaks a leg under to get back to half guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Stevens is looking to control Dannis's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Stevens avoid being mounted?
Dannis is trying to control. Stevens wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Dannis wants to pass the guard but Stevens is defending well.
Stevens has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Dannis is working away from the top position though.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Stevens shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Stevens tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Dannis swivels and escapes.
Dannis throwing a counter right hand but Stevens manages to avoid it.
Stevens looks winded!
Stevens shoots in and drives through. Dannis sprawls well.
A little feinted left hand from Dannis on the counter but he doesn't commit to it.
Douglas Dannis has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Joe Stevens.

Dannis drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.
Dannis trying to control the position but Stevens is working away.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's time! Dannis's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.


Stevens changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Dannis tries to avoid it but Stevens manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Dannis to the ground. Dannis escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Stevens gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily
and Dannis makes him pay by landing a nice hook to the body before moving out of range.

Stevens drives through with a takedown into Dannis's guard. Let's see what he can do from the top position.
Dannis is trying to keep Stevens in close.
Stevens trying to control the position from guard on top but Dannis is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Dannis wants to sweep here but Stevens controlling him for the moment.

Stevens postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Dannis is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Stevens, into his guard.

Dannis is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.

Dannis passes easily into side control. Nice work.
Stevens manages to get one leg in to regain half guard.
Dannis seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Stevens does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.

Dannis is trying to control the action in half guard but Stevens is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.
Dannis is looking to pass the guard... He's managed it - he's now in full mount!
Douglas Dannis overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Dannis can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Stevens is looking to escape.
Stevens tries to lock up and control but Dannis gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.
Stevens is looking to improve his position but Dannis isn't that keen on the idea.
Stevens holding onto his opponent's waist for dear life, as Dannis tries to land some strikes to get him to release his grip.
Dannis content just to control the position here.

Dannis wants to take a breather but Stevens is having none of it.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

Stevens is looking to control Dannis's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Stevens avoid being mounted?

Stevens is breathing heavily.
Dannis wants to control but Stevens is keeping him busy.

That's time! Dannis's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. Ladies and gentlemen, this is the final round!


Stevens gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily
and Dannis counters with a stiff right hand.
Dannis wants to clinch.

Stevens throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Dannis tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Stevens is in Dannis's guard.
Stevens must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
Dannis is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Stevens is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Dannis pulls his head out easily.

Dannis is going oldschool here, as he tries to force Stevens to tap using a forearm choke. This isn't 1993 though, so Stevens shrugs it off.
