PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Clifford Bonner (ranked 23810 p4p, 0 weight class) and Ape Piru (ranked 3299 p4p, 349 weight class). The atmosphere really building for this one as we go over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Clifford Bonner!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Ape Piru!
The judges for this bout are Anni Minnemäki, Ben Zyskovitsi and Arvi Lind.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Piru gets to the clinch - let's see what his plan is here.

Piru turns his hips and lands a very nice judo throw into side control!
Bonner might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Bonner gets one leg under and gets the fight to half guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Bonner is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Piru's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Piru's back!

Bonner is working hard for the rear naked choke here.
Bonner is trying to stick to Piru's back but Piru is turning into Bonner. He's managed to reverse the position - now he's in Bonner's guard. Polite applause from the crowd in appreciation of some nice Jiu Jitsu by Piru.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

Bonner had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Piru defends it easily.

Piru is pushing down on Bonner's leg trying to pass to half guard. Bonner is fighting to maintain full guard but Piru has managed to sneak the leg through.
Piru seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime.

Piru working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that.
Bonner wants to improve his position but Piru is controlling well.

Piru stops Bonner from getting back to his feet.

Piru is pressing down on Bonner's thigh, looking to free his foot. Bonner is holding on for now.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Bonner is looking for a sweep. Piru is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Piru looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Bonner with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.
Piru tries to pass the half guard into mount. Bonner knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.
Bonner could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.
Piru seems to have lost interest with the ground game and is thinking about standing back up.

Piru wants to free his trapped foot but Bonner is holding on for dear life with his legs.
Piru wants to control but Bonner is keeping him busy.

Bonner is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Bonner is working hard here to advance position.
Piru wants to pass to mount but Bonner is defending the position.

The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Piru is looking to advance position but Bonner won't allow it.
Bonner really is built like a bowling ball. I wonder if he'd roll if you pushed him down a hill...

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Bonner is looking to escape.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.

Piru has closed the distance and engaged Bonner in a clinch.
Piru's corner are urging him to control the action in the clinch for a moment, rather than mount any serious offense. I'm sure the crowd appreciate those instructions... not.

Piru's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Piru closes the distance and after a bit of a stuggle, scores a takedown into Bonner's guard.

Bonner has managed to wall walk up one of the corner posts to get back to his feet. Piru is pushing him up against the cage, looking to control the position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Ape Piru dominated that round.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!


Bonner tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
Piru throws a sloppy head kick and Bonner moves out of range easily.
Bonner shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Piru as he jumps to the side.
Piru looked like he wanted to counter with a punch but didn't throw it.
Bonner tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Piru defends well and Bonner ends up having to push Piru into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch.

Piru shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in side control! That's better than Piru was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!
Bonner tries to buck Piru off but Piru is having none of it.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Bonner gets one leg under and gets the fight to half guard.

Piru has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

Piru is keen to just control but Bonner is a slippery customer.

Piru is working for a kimura but Bonner is defending it quite comfortably.
Piru takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Bonner is trying to get back to full guard.

Bonner wants to sweep but no luck.
Piru looking to control the position here, rather than advance.
Piru tries to free his leg and advance position but Bonner is retaining full guard.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.

Bonner clinches with his opponent.

Piru breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Ape Piru seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Bonner enables Piru to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Bonner manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.
Piru is breathing heavily.

Piru sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Bonner's guard.

Bonner has managed to escape just enough to sneak back to his feet but Piru is on him like a limpet, forcing Bonner back against the cage.

Piru has moved round to his opponent's back and is looking for a suplex! Oh snap! He's tossed Bonner clear over his head and slammed him to the mat!

Bonner is trying escape back to his feet. He turns into his opponent's guard and eventually finds his way back to his feet.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close second round but Ape Piru will probably get the nod - 10:9.
That's time! Back to the action! This is the final round!



Piru gets to the clinch - let's see what his plan is here.
Piru lands a shoulder strike.

Piru has double underhooks and is working for a body lock takedown. He's got it. The fighters land in half guard but Bonner regains guard immediately.
Bonner is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Piru stays in close to Bonner's body and controls the position.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Bonner wants to hit a switch here but Piru passes into full mount! Oh no, disaster for Bonner there!

Bonner manages to regain half guard. Good work.
Piru looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Bonner with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.

The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Piru connects with a nice short shot to Bonner's temple.

Piru content to sit in half guard and control for a moment.
Bonner trying to hold on to Piru's head to control him but Piru postures up.
Bonner is staying active underneath Piru, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
Bonner wants to improve his position but Piru is controlling well.

Bonner tries to regain full guard. Instead though, Piru has advanced to mount. Uh oh.
Bonner is trying to get back to his feet but can't.

Piru is going oldschool here, as he tries to force Bonner to tap using a forearm choke. This isn't 1993 though, so Bonner shrugs it off.

Piru is in a good position here but he's just trying to control... And he's not even managing to do that successfully.

Bonner is desperately trying to get back to half guard.
Bonner is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.
Bonner keeping his composure momentarily, calmly looking to get back to half guard.
Bonner wants to control but Piru is having none of it.
Piru prevents Bonner from getting the reversal.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Ape Piru is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.

Ape Piru comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Piru has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
