PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Christopher Fry (ranked 24070 p4p, 0 weight class) and Greg Hunlin (ranked 3770 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 3 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Christopher Fry!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 5 - 2 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Greg Hunlin!
The judges for this bout are Dirk Anderson, Sandra Marshall and Santiago Holmes.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
A leg kick checked by Hunlin.
Hunlin is clearly trying to counter these attacks from Fry with a body shot.

Hunlin gets to the clinch - let's see what his plan is here.
Fry wants to take the fight to the mat but Hunlin manages to get underhooks and keep the fight in the clinch.

Fry is working on a leg, looking for a takedown but Hunlin is defending well.
Fry drops to a knee looking for a takedown but Hunlin gets the underhooks and prevents it.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
The pace slowing considerably in the clinch, as Fry takes a break from that fighting nonsense to think about the finer things in life.

Fry is trying to work for a kimura but Hunlin is defending well.

Fry passes the half guard and he's now in mount! Big trouble for Hunlin!
Fry lands a big shot there that rocks Hunlin but he's holding on and managing to survive for now.

Hunlin tries to hold on but Fry pushes him away.
Fry has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Fry looking to control but Hunlin is working nicely, looking to advance position himself.
Hunlin is in all sorts of trouble here.
Hunlin wriggling around on the bottom manages to avoid the strikes thrown by Fry.
Fry will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Hunlin tries to get back to half guard but can't.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Hunlin bucks up and manages to get a nice reversal! He's in guard on the top - nicely done!
Hunlin must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
Fry pulls Hunlin in to control the position.

Hunlin stands and steps away. Fry gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.
Fry avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
Hunlin has his takedown stuffed
and Fry counters with a right hand to the body.
Hunlin wants to clinch up but Fry keeps it at a distance.
Fry appears to be looking for a counter takedown.
Hunlin is looking to take this fight into the clinch.
Fry throws a quick counter head kick but Hunlin was just out of range.

and Fry counters with a nice low kick that buckles Hunlin's knee momentarily.
Fry has been working on his balance at Temp Spar Gym, so perhaps that has help him stuff some of the takedown attempts by Hunlin.
Hunlin throws a right and a left that Fry avoids nicely.
As Hunlin backs away, Fry returns fire with a leg kick that just misses.
Hunlin tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Fry manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Hunlin tries to clinch up but Fry circles away and keeps his distance.
It looked like Fry was looking amped, ready to throw a big counter but didn't commit.
Hunlin tries to clinch but Fry is having none of it.
Greg Hunlin seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Hunlin.
A little feinted left hand from Fry on the counter but he doesn't commit to it.
Hunlin shoots in looking for a takedown. Fry tries to sprawl out of it but Hunlin keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Fry manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Fry darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Hunlin moves into the clinch.
Fry wants to take the fight to the mat but Hunlin manages to get underhooks and keep the fight in the clinch.
Fry is looking for a takedown.
Hunlin is trying to pull guard but being pressed up against the cage enables Fry to keep the fight standing.
Fry can't get the takedown.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Christopher Fry. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Hunlin misses with a takedown attempt - Fry sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Fry throws a big counter combination but Hunlin scrambles out of danger and avoids any damage.

and Fry holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.
Fry is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Hunlin can do to turn this around?

Fry jumps guard and drags Hunlin to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back.

The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Hunlin is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Fry is trying to keep Hunlin in close.

Fry looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
Fry is looking to stand back up... there's a bit of a scramble and Hunlin dives into side control.

Hunlin wants to control but Fry is keeping him busy.

Fry is moving his hips around well on the bottom and has managed to get back to half guard.
Hunlin tries to pass to full mount but Fry defends it.
Hunlin tries to stand but his hand is stuck under Fry.
Fry is doing well to avoid being mounted. He's controlling the position at the moment.

If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup.
Fry is trying to control but can't.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Hunlin tries to close the distance and clinch but Fry swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
Hunlin tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Fry manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.

Hunlin gets in close and instigates a clinch.

Hunlin's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Hunlin is looking to take this fight into the clinch.
Hunlin tries to clinch but Fry moves out of range.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Fry slips under a jab.
Fry throwing a counter right hand but Hunlin manages to avoid it.
Hunlin tries to land a leg kick but Fry saw it coming and moves away.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close second round but Greg Hunlin will probably get the nod - 10:9.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. The crowd applaud as we get ready to start the final round!

Hunlin connects with a good right hand that stumbles Fry. Fry circles away out of range and recomposes himself.
Fry fails miserably with a takedown attempt.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Fry leaves Hunlin with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Hunlin tries to clinch there but Fry circles away.
Hunlin throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Fry.
It looked like Fry wanted to counter with a hook but didn't fully commit.
Hunlin has his takedown stuffed
and Fry counters with a nice body shot.
Christopher Fry has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Greg Hunlin.
Hunlin misses with a takedown
and Fry counters with a one-two to the body.
Hunlin tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Fry was well out of range. Poor timing from Hunlin.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Hunlin is defended easily by Fry.
Fry throwing a counter right hand but Hunlin manages to avoid it.
Hunlin takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Hunlin goes for a double leg but Fry avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Fry continues to drive forward.

Hunlin drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.
Fry sneaks a leg under to get back to half guard.
Fry is looking to control Hunlin's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Fry avoid being mounted?
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Fry is refusing to be controlled, as Hunlin sits in half guard.
Fry is trying to get back to full guard.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Fry manages to get to full guard.
Fry tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Fry is trying to keep Hunlin in close.
Hunlin wants to stand and escape but instead Fry has hit a sweep and he's now on top in guard.


That's four minutes gone in the round.
A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Fry working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.
Fry postures up.
Fry engaging in some classic timewasting tactics.
Fry won't allow Hunlin to sweep him here.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Hunlin is trying to control the position but Fry postures up.
Hunlin looking to hit a scissor sweep but Fry is one step ahead there.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
Hunlin tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Christopher Fry.
I think Fry has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
