PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Phil Coleman (ranked 79 p4p, 0 weight class) and Apolinario Mabini (ranked 400 p4p, 51 weight class). Mabini comes into a darkened arena with his song building. Noypi by Bamboo kicks in, the lights come on and the crowd goes wild! What a showman! Both fighters really staring each other down here, as Apolinario Mabini enters the cage!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 15 - 2 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Phil Coleman!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 11 - 3 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Apolinario Mabini!
The judges for this bout are Winston Alpacca, Daniel Franklin and Peter Branson.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Mabini misses with a looping left.
Coleman avoids the body shot from Mabini.
Mabini misses the jab.
Coleman misses with an uppercut.
Mabini swings away with a body shot that misses

and Coleman counters with a shoot takedown. Mabini fights it but they end up in guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Coleman is sitting in guard, working some ground and pound.
Coleman postures up in Mabini's guard and throws a big left but Mabini blocks it.
Mabini keeping moving, preventing Coleman from controlling successfully.
Mabini is adopting a defensive guard.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Mabini working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Coleman.
Coleman throws a big right hand that misses.
Mabini utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
Mabini is trying to keep Coleman in close.
Coleman lands a couple of elbows.
Mabini trying to keep a closed guard but Coleman is proving a slippery customer.
Mabini really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Coleman. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Coleman sitting in guard here, content to control.
Coleman has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
Mabini ducks right into an uppercut from Coleman.
Coleman staying out of range there.
Mabini looks to score with a jab to the body but Coleman is just out of range.
Apolinario Mabini is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Mabini scores with a crisp jab that stopped Coleman in his tracks.


It looks like Phil Coleman has been cut.
Apolinario Mabini seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Coleman lands a slapping body shot.

Mabini instigates a clinch.
Mabini throws a punch but it's blocked by Coleman.
Mabini misses with some punches.

Coleman manages to break the clinch.
Coleman wings a very wild body shot but it does the job and lands to the midsection.

and Coleman counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Coleman.
Coleman postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Coleman accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
Mabini has momentary wrist control but Coleman slips an elbow through the middle.
Coleman landing with the ground and pound.
Coleman throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Mabini works some decent striking defense from the bottom.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Coleman wants to control from the top but Mabini keeps moving.
Mabini is pulling down on Coleman's head. It's preventing any offense from Coleman, at least for the moment.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Coleman trying to control the position from guard on top but Mabini is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Mabini is avoiding any damage by keeping wrist control.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Coleman postures up.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's time! Coleman's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.


Mabini closes the distance looking to clinch

and Coleman counters with a nice double leg into half guard.
Coleman is trying to control. Mabini wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.
Mabini wants to control but Coleman is keeping busy.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Coleman working the head and body with strikes.
Coleman thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.
Mabini trying to keep hold of his opponent's head but Coleman manages to pass to mount!

Coleman lands with some vicious ground and pound - can Mabini hang on?
The referee warns Mabini that he has to improve his position here as he takes two more clean shots to the head.


Mabini is rocked!
Mabini takes a big shot to the dome and his eyes have rolled back in his head! Coleman's killer instinct has kicked in as he finishes the fight with more strikes. Impressive finish.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:35 of round 2, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Phil Coleman!
In his post fight interview, Phil Coleman started talking himself up. Luckily his charisma kept the crowd on side and gave him a good reception.
In defeat, Apolinario Mabini stepped up to the mic, saying 'A man can be destroyed but not defeated... I will pickup the pieces that I learned today and will grow from it.'.
