PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Donte Bowen (ranked 6323 p4p, 0 weight class) and Dexter Flips (ranked 4072 p4p, 0 weight class). On his way into the cage it seems that Donte Bowen has been attacked by a crazed fan! It looks like it might have been the just bleed guy! Luckily Donte Bowen seems to be OK! I thought that lunatic was in prison!?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Donte Bowen!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Dexter Flips!
The judges for this bout are Ian Loll, Steve Smith and Gregory Folan.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Flips stuffs the takedown.

Flips takes the fight into the clinch.

Bowen jumps guard.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Bowen is on top in guard.

Flips trying to control the position here.
Bowen is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Flips working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Bowen doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Bowen manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Flips wants to get back to his feet but he's too absorbed in his own little project and Bowen manages to pass to side control.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Still in half guard, Bowen seems content to control.
Flips is trying to control but Bowen passes into side control!
Bowen takes a little break here. Flips wants to take advantage but he is being controlled well.
Flips tries to slip a leg under to move to half guard but Bowen presses down on the leg and jumps into full mount!

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Bowen controlling the position easily from mount.
Flips looks more muscular than last time we saw him. He must have been on the weights.
Bowen pausing momentarily but resumes with a couple of decent strikes that do a bit of damage.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

Flips tries to lock up and control but Bowen gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.
Bowen controlling the pace for now.
Flips looks winded!
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Donte Bowen dominated that round.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!


Nice sprawl there from Bowen as Flips shoots in.

Bowen scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice.
Bowen grinds an elbow into Flips's temple.

Bowen tries for a kimura but Flips is defending well.
Flips trying to remain calm as Bowen controls from the top position.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Bowen moving around in side mount but really he's just happy to control for now.

We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.
Flips is breathing heavily.
Flips is looking to slip a leg under and get half guard but Bowen is one step ahead and moves to full mount!

Flips wants to hold on but Bowen pushes him away.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

Flips tries to lock up and control but Bowen gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.

Bowen takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.
Bowen lands with some strikes.

Bowen is still in mount, landing shots to his trapped opponent. Flips can't stay in a position like this for much longer.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Bowen controlling the position easily from mount.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Flips really trying hard to get back to half guard here.

Bowen is working for a guillotine from mount but Flips frees his head quite easily.
Bowen is landing with some decent strikes but Flips is trying to advance his position so the referee is letting the fight continue.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Bowen takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Donte Bowen dominated that second round.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! This is the final round!


Flips tries to score a power double leg takedown but Bowen sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Flips somewhat.
Bowen tries to counter by clinching up but Flips breaks away and moves out of range.
Bowen dives in and grabs Flips's left leg, looking for a takedown. Flips pushes down on Bowen's head and hops out.
Flips drops down looking to force a counter takedown but Bowen defends it well.
Flips throws a push kick but Bowen slaps the foot to one side.
Bowen will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
Nice sprawl there from Flips as Bowen shoots in.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Donte Bowen. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Bowen defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Flips.
Bowen keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Bowen tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Flips defends well and Bowen ends up having to push Flips into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch.
Bowen leaves Flips with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Dexter Flips seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Flips fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Bowen, pushing him back against the cage.
Flips takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Bowen gets a trip takedown into half guard.
Bowen slows the pace down in half guard.
Donte Bowen overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Flips pushes Bowen off but Bowen dives into side control.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

Bowen thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.
Flips is positioning himself to get back to half guard.
Flips is letting Bowen control him for a moment.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Flips tries to wriggle free to get back to his feet but he's given up his back! Oops.

Bowen has his opponent trapped and is landing shots. Not a good position for Flips.
You know, I was talking to some of our celebrities at ringside tonight and they were split right down the middle on who was going to win this fight.

And that's the end of the fight!
Donte Bowen showed his dominance in that final round.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Bowen, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
