PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a super heavyweight MMA rules bout between Yen Askren (ranked 2658 p4p, 82 weight class) and Rustam Shakhbulatov (ranked 1376 p4p, 41 weight class). Askren comes to the cage accompanied by Hello from the Askren Side. Shakhbulatov has chosen Sabina Saidova - Dagestan as his entrance music, which hasn't gone down very well with the crowd. Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the super heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 13 - 14 - 1, fighting out of Sydney, Yen Askren!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 18 - 10 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Rustam Shakhbulatov!
The judges for this bout are , Jack Bonds and Don Winkell.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Shakhbulatov misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
It looked like Askren wanted to counter with a hook but didn't fully commit.
Askren swings and misses with a hook to the body.
Askren fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Shakhbulatov manages to avoid it.
Askren throws a right hand that misses
and Shakhbulatov counters nicely by changing levels and landing a hook to the body.
Shakhbulatov has been working on his striking defense in training and it's paying off as Askren is landing a low percentage of strikes.
Askren just misses with a punch to the body.
Shakhbulatov shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Askren as he jumps to the side.
Askren has been talking about how he's improved his wrestling in the run up to the fight so let's see if that's enough to sway the balance.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Askren thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Shakhbulatov's head.

Askren shuffles to his left behind two crisp jabs. Shakhbulatov eats them both and turns towards Askren to reposition himself and eats a stinging right hand-left hook combo.
Askren is looking to wear down Shakhbulatov with body shots, infact he's throwing more body shots than head shots at the moment.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Askren is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Shakhbulatov can do to turn this around?
Shakhbulatov shoots in looking for a takedown. Askren tries to sprawl out of it but Shakhbulatov keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Askren manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Shakhbulatov connects with a nice short shot to Askren's temple.
Askren wants to improve his position but Shakhbulatov is controlling well.

Shakhbulatov seems like he's working for an arm triangle here. He's freed his trapped foot and he's rotating nicely. Askren is in big trouble! He's tapping out! This one is aaaaaaaaaaaall over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:59 of round 3, we have a winner by way of Submission (Arm Triangle). Rustam Shakhbulatov!
Yen Askren was interviewed post fight and said 'I blame Bjorn and the Egg.'.
