PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Judas Priest (ranked 1464 p4p, 187 weight class) and Charles Hawtry (ranked 461 p4p, 69 weight class). Hawtry has chosen The Rain as his entrance music. Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 5 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Judas Priest!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 13 - 9 - 1, fighting out of Las Vegas, Charles Hawtry!
The judges for this bout are Robert Twigg, Alan Glass and George Francis.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Hawtry throws an ugly left hook that misses
enabling Priest to counter with a crisp jab.
Hawtry works the jab nicely.


It looks like Judas Priest has been cut.
Priest shoots in for a double leg but Hawtry sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.
A little jabbing left from Hawtry on the counter but it doesn't find it's target.
Priest gets cracked with a nice right hand there by Hawtry.
Priest swings and misses with a hook to the body.
Hawtry waving his hands out in front of him, looking to distract Priest.
Priest drops down looking for a counter takedown but Hawtry sprawls and moves away.
Hawtry works Priest's body with a nice hook.

Priest closes the distance and clinches.
Hawtry has Priest pressed against the cage.
Hawtry comes over the top with an elbow. That landed flush.
With the fighters clinched against the cage, Priest creates a bit of distance for himself and scores with a nice uppercut.
Priest blocks a body shot from Hawtry.
Hawtry blocking some punches.
This has been an exciting period of action!

Hawtry pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
A punch combination from Hawtry misses.
Priest throws the left hand but Hawtry avoids the punch easily.

Hawtry throws a jab but it's blocked by Priest.

and Priest holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.
Priest working aggressively here.
Priest has been talking about how he's improved his wrestling in the run up to the fight so let's see if that's enough to sway the balance.
Priest lands a right hand that snaps the head of Hawtry backwards.

Priest drags the fight down to the ground.

Priest working for a triangle but Hawtry defends it easily.
Hawtry showing good wrestling skills to control the position.

Priest not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Hawtry throws a big elbow that misses.

We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.
Hawtry slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.
Hawtry takes a step towards his opponent and connects with a left hand, before circling away.
Priest throws a half hearted mid kick.

Priest on the wrong end of a decent looking cross there.
Priest doesn't react quick enough there as he takes a shot to the body.
Charles Hawtry seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Hawtry misses with a wild body shot.
Hawtry uses good head movement to avoid the hook from Priest.
Hawtry gets cracked there but stands up to it.
Hawtry displays some good footwork, moving neatly out of range as Priest throws out the jab.
Priest takes a swing at Hawtry's ribcage but misses.
Priest loads up on a big right hand but Hawtry slips the punch.
It seemed like Hawtry was going to counter with the hook but didn't fully commit to it.
Hawtry slips in close and lands a nice hook before moving back out of range.

Priest throws a head kick that misses.
Hawtry tries to counter with a clinch but Priest shakes him off and moves away.

and Priest counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Priest.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Hawtry bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Priest's guard.

Hawtry postures up and lands a big shot to Priest's brow.

Hawtry controls the pace of the fight for a moment.
Hawtry works a leg free and moves into half guard.
Hawtry is nestled in close to Priest, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.
Hawtry looks to score some points with some ground and pound.


Priest is rocked!

Oh Priest is still in real trouble! Will he be able to recover?!!
Hawtry prevents Priest from improving his position.
Priest is trying to control but can't.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Charles Hawtry will probably get the nod.

The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.

Priest seems to have got his legs back now.
Sloppy strikes from Hawtry. Those never looked like landing.
A looping hook to the body misses from Priest. Hawtry does a little dance to reset his feet.
Priest swings and misses with a hook to the body.
Hawtry thows a left - swing and a miss!
Hawtry lands a nice looking body shot.
Hawtry jabbing away but nothing is landing.
Priest darts in looking for a takedown but Hawtry gets double underhooks and turns Priest into the cage.
Hawtry swings wildly with a right hand that was never going to find it's target.

Priest clinches up against the cage.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
A frustrated look appears on Hawtry's face as he tries to break the clinch.
The pace slowing considerably in the clinch, as Hawtry takes a break from that fighting nonsense to think about the finer things in life.
Priest avoiding damage as Hawtry throws knees to the body.
Hawtry has Priest pushed against the cage.
Priest has dropped down and is looking to force the takedown but it's defended by Hawtry after a bit of a struggle.

Hawtry struggles to land a body shot inside as Priest controls his hands.

Priest manages to pull guard.
Hawtry content to stall in guard here.
Let's hope that Hawtry has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.
Priest is striking off his back. Hawtry thinks nothing of it though and passes easily into half guard.

Priest wants to improve his position but Hawtry is controlling well.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Hawtry wants to take a breather but Priest is having none of it.
Hawtry has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
Hawtry thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.

The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Hawtry connects with a nice short shot to Priest's temple.
Hawtry wants to lay and pray for a moment but Priest keeps working.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Come on Hawtry - let's have some action - none of this stalling nonsense.
Hawtry lands a right hand that snaps the head of Priest backwards.
Hawtry blocks an uppercut.
Hawtry has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Hawtry works for underhooks and lands a body shot in the process.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Hawtry gets underhooks to prevent Priest's takedown attempt.
Priest has a couple of punches blocked by Hawtry.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Charles Hawtry showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
