PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Hobert Vance (ranked 7109 p4p, 0 weight class) and Hunter Boles (ranked 4364 p4p, 385 weight class). Boles comes into a darkened arena with his song building. Neva Cared kicks in, the lights come on and the crowd goes wild! What a showman! Hobert Vance has a significant reach advantage - let's see if he can make it count.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Hobert Vance!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Hunter Boles!
The judges for this bout are Jack Bonds, Timothy Bukovac and Frank Antenori.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Boles drives through with a takedown into Vance's guard. Let's see what he can do from the top position.
Boles won't allow Vance to sweep him here.

Boles is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! Vance is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! Vance has escaped and now he's on top!

Vance not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.

Vance thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.

Boles is looking for a triangle but Vance pushes his legs off easily.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Vance got a little sloppy there for a moment and Boles has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Vance has managed to get both his arms back between Boles's legs - danger averted.
Vance controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.

Boles has his foot on Vance's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Vance works his way back into a safe position though.

Vance content to stall in guard here.
Boles looking for a sweep. Not yet Boles, not yet.
Vance is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.
Boles is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Vance avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Boles.
Vance works his way to full guard. Good work.
Vance is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Vance will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Vance is on top in guard.

Vance looking to control the position here, rather than advance.
Vance has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.
Vance's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.
Boles is trying to control the position but Vance postures up.
Boles tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Vance cracks Boles with a solid left hand.

Vance with a couple of shots to the head there. Not particularly brutal.
Vance makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard.
Vance looking to control the position here, rather than advance.
Boles keeping moving, preventing Vance from controlling successfully.
Vance is stalling in the full guard.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.

Boles feints and as Vance raises his hands in defense, Boles changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.

Vance not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.

Vance has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Boles can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
Vance really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
Boles stopping the sweep attempt from Vance.
Boles trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.
Boles postures up in Vance's guard and throws a big left but Vance blocks it.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Vance avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up.
Vance bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Boles's guard.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Hunter Boles will probably get the nod.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!


Boles punishes Vance's body with a nice straight punch.
Boles tries to clinch up but Vance circles away and keeps his distance.
Nice body punch from Boles.
Boles connects with a looping left hand that seems like it dazed Vance momentarily.
Boles tries a head kick but it misses.

Boles shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Vance's guard.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Vance trying to keep a closed guard but Boles is proving a slippery customer.
Vance looking to hit a scissor sweep but Boles is one step ahead there.
Boles must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

Boles is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
Boles looking to sit in guard and control but Vance gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Vance is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.
Vance wants to control from the top but Boles keeps moving.
Vance is stalling in the full guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

Boles is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Vance drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Vance jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.
Vance slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Vance wants to sweep here but Boles controlling him for the moment.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Boles throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Vance circles away from the clinch attempt.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Boles tries to close the distance and clinch up but Vance swats him away and circles back towards the center.

Vance gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Boles to score an easy takedown into full guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Hunter Boles showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! Let's hear some noise people - this is the final round!


Boles moves in looking to clinch but Vance pushes him off.
Boles has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

Boles shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Vance is trying to defend but Boles finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.
Vance is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Boles throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.

Boles takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.
Boles is pressing down on Vance's thigh, looking to free his foot. Vance is holding on for now.
Vance regains full guard. Nicely done.

Boles controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.
Vance lands a good elbow from the bottom.
Hunter Boles has got the better of the ground game so far.
Boles wanted to stand there but Vance had control of the position.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
Boles moves away from the strike by Vance.
Boles misses with a low kick.

Boles closes the distance and after a bit of a stuggle, scores a takedown into Vance's guard.
Boles takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Vance looking for a sweep. Not yet Vance, not yet.
Vance with a couple of shots from the bottom there - nothing Boles can't handle though.
Vance trying to control the position.
Boles won't allow Vance to sweep him here.
Boles wants to control from the top but Vance keeps moving.
Boles throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent.
We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.
Vance thows some rabbit punches from the bottom but they don't do any damage.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

Boles drives through with a takedown into Vance's guard. Let's see what he can do from the top position.
Boles wants to control from the top but Vance keeps moving.
Boles trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
Vance lands a beautiful sweep and he's now moved into his opponent's guard.

Vance keeps in close for a moment and lands a decent shot to the side of Boles's head.
Vance controls the pace of the fight for a moment.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Boles looking for a sweep. Not yet Boles, not yet.

Vance forces his way into half guard.
Vance takes advantage of the dominant position to land a couple of big hammer fists.
The referee calls for the fighters to work.
Boles is trying to stand back up but Vance is controlling him
Vance is just sitting in half guard, waiting for something to happen.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Vance wants to work for an arm triangle but Boles is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.
Hobert Vance has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Hunter Boles is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.

Vance is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Boles has managed to free his arm - good work.

Hunter Boles comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Boles has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
