PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Sanka Coffie (ranked 927 p4p, 54 weight class) and Preston Mason (ranked 723 p4p, 40 weight class). Chooooooooon! I think Coffie might be my favorite fighter, now he's come out to Redemption Song. Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 11 - 6 - 0, fighting out of New York, Sanka Coffie!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 14 - 7 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Preston Mason!
The judges for this bout are , Timothy Bukovac and Jack Bonds.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Coffie avoids the head kick by Mason.
Mason cracks Coffie with a nice right hand that draws applause from the crowd.

Coffie bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
Coffie trying to control the action but Mason is working from the bottom.
Coffie wants to stand but Mason is controlling his arm.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Mason is positioning himself to get back to half guard.
Mason is not content to let Coffie control the position.

Coffie definitely looks more muscular than last time we saw him fight.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.

Preston Mason seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

The fighters are starting to get sweaty, which will make takedowns a bit more tricky.
Mason fakes low and throws an overhand right that catches Coffie on the side of the head.

Mason fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Coffie avoids it really well and circles away.

Mason loads up on a big right hand but Coffie slips the punch.

Coffie throws a right and a left that both miss.

Coffie closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.

Sanka Coffie has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Preston Mason.

The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

Mason looks like he'd prefer to be striking at range right now.
Mason's head jolts backwards as he takes an uppercut right on the button!

Mason pulls guard effortlessly.
Mason is still in real trouble! Can Coffie finish him?
Mason can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Coffie controls the pace.
Mason seems to have recovered his senses.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Mason is on top in guard.

Coffie bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Mason's guard.

Coffie wanted to stand there but Mason had control of the position.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Sanka Coffie dominated that round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


A telegraphed right hand from Coffie misses the target.
Mason feints a straight left to the body, then turns around with a flashy move and hits Coffies jaw with a dramatic spinning back fist!

Coffie closes the distance and gets a trip takedown into side control. Mason quickly recovers to half guard.
Mason felt the need to train up his defensive grappling in the buildup to the fight. Presumably he was expecting to be in a difficult position like this, so let's see if he can get out of it.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Coffie tries to pass to full mount but Mason defends it.
Mason works his way to full guard. Good work.

Mason is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Coffie is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Mason trying to mount his opponent but Coffie defends it.

Mason looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Coffie with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.

Mason pausing momentarily but resumes with a couple of decent strikes that do a bit of damage.

Mason cracks Coffie with a nasty head shot there - the crowd let out an audible gasp there, as the noise reverberated around the arena.
Preston Mason has got the better of the ground game so far.
Mason can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Coffie is looking to escape.
Mason lands a couple of nice shots there from mount.
Mason has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.

Mason lands an elbow that was bordering on illegal but the referee lets it go with a warning.


Coffie is rocked!

Oh Coffie is still in real trouble! Will he be able to recover?!!
Mason cracks Coffie with a big head shot that has him covering up instantly! He's rolled onto his side and the referee has seen enough - this one is aaaaaaaaaaall over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:29 of round 2, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Preston Mason!
