PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Iain Reilly (ranked 2295 p4p, 280 weight class) and Jodi Joe Fjera (ranked 2001 p4p, 252 weight class). Reilly's ring entrance music is that housewives' favourite, Dubliners - Fields of Athenry. Fjera is bobbing his head along to his entrance song: Tito & Tarantula . Jodi Joe Fjera has the better chin. Will he look to stand and bang today?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 20 - 24 - 0, fighting out of New York, Iain Reilly!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 12 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Jodi Joe Fjera!
The judges for this bout are Lou da Vinci, David Schapiro and Eddie Farnsworth.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Reilly misses with a two punch combination.
Fjera looking to throw a kick but he's pulled out of it.
A jab from Reilly does it's job there.
Reilly uses decent footwork to sidestep a right hand from Fjera.
Fjera swings wildly with a right hand that was never going to find it's target.
Fjera misses with a straight right.
A leg kick checked by Reilly.
A little feinted left hand from Reilly on the counter but he doesn't commit to it.
Fjera throws a head kick but Reilly moves out of range.
Fjera tries to score a power double leg takedown but Reilly sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Fjera somewhat.
Reilly tries to counter with a takedown but Fjera is quick to defend against it.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
A looping hook to the body misses from Reilly. Fjera does a little dance to reset his feet.
Fjera misses with a looping right.
Reilly lands three nice shots there - that looked like it hurt!
Reilly throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.

Fjera uses good head movement to avoid the hook from Reilly.

and Fjera counters with a left and a right that stings Reilly.
A slapping body kick lands there for Fjera.
Reilly throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land.
Fjera uses good footwork to avoid the strikes from Reilly.
Fjera misses with an attempted mid kick.
Reilly dips down and scores with a jab to the body.
Nice defenses there by Fjera.
Fjera misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
Fjera closes this distance looking for a takedown but Reilly circles away.
Iain Reilly has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Jodi Joe Fjera.
Reilly looks to throw the jab but Fjera is out of range.

Fjera throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Reilly's waist but Reilly gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Fjera off to one side.
A slapping body kick lands there for Fjera.
This has been an exciting period of action!

Reilly shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat.
Reilly postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Fjera is on top in guard.

Reilly can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Fjera controls the pace.
Fjera pushes down on Reilly's leg and manages to get into half guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Reilly is looking for a sweep. Fjera is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.

Fjera controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.
Reilly keeping moving, preventing Fjera from controlling successfully.
Reilly wants to sweep here but Fjera controlling him for the moment.
Reilly is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Fjera is pushing down on Reilly's leg trying to pass to half guard. Reilly is fighting to maintain full guard but Fjera has managed to sneak the leg through.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Reilly wants to sweep here but Fjera controlling him for the moment.
Reilly has a butterfly guard looking to sweep but Fjera has passed into side control.

The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Fjera working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.
Reilly tries to slip a leg under to move to half guard but Fjera presses down on the leg and jumps into full mount!
Fjera looking to control but Reilly is working nicely, looking to advance position himself.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Jodi Joe Fjera will probably get the nod.
That's time! Reilly's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.


Fjera throws a combination that misses
and Reilly counters with a nice uppercut.
Reilly misses with an uppercut.
Fjera throws a nice hook to the body that draws an oooh from the crowd.
Reilly takes a shot right to the liver - Bas would have been proud of that punch.
Fjera throws a mid kick that lands with a slap.
Reilly throws a lazy right hand but Fjera sees it coming a mile off and sidesteps it easily.
Reilly slips under a jab from Fjera.
Reilly seem to be loading up, looking for a big counter.
Fjera paws at his opponent with the jab and then lunges in with a straight, right on the button.
Fjera has a takedown stuffed.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Reilly clobbers Fjera with an overhand right that has the crowd gasping. That made a horrendous noise.
No joy there for Fjera, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Reilly changes levels looking for a counter takedown but doesn't commit.

Reilly gets tackled into the cage by Fjera. Fjera maintains the clinch.
Reilly misses with a shot to the kidneys.
Fjera fails to land with a short punch on the inside.

Reilly's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Fjera ducks under a wild hook from Reilly.
Fjera unleashes a big counter combination but Reilly bobs and weaves and avoids any damage.
Reilly scores with a sloppy right hand. Fjera should have avoided that one.
Reilly lands the left hand.
Fjera fails with the takedown.
Iain Reilly has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Jodi Joe Fjera.
Reilly shoots for a double leg takedown but Fjera sprawls well. He's pushed Reilly's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
Reilly misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from Fjera.

Fjera's corner calls for a 1-2. Fjera obliges with the 1 part as he scores the single shot and moves back out of range.
Reilly catches Fjera with a nice straight right. He seems pissed - ooooh, it's on now! On like donkey kong!
Jodi Joe Fjera seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Fjera shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Reilly half commits to a counter takedown before pushing away, out of range.

Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Reilly lands a really nice looking cross but Fjera seems unphased.
Fjera throws a right hand that Reilly ducks under and follows up with a left that Reilly also avoids with ease.
The fight stays on the outside here - Fjera looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
Fjera misses with a shot to the body
and Reilly counters with a quick right hand to the jaw.
Fjera misses with a hook. Reilly ducked under it nicely.
Fjera slips a jab and a cross from Reilly.
Fjera defending well as Reilly loads up on a big left hand.
Nice takedown defense from Fjera. No joy for Reilly on that attempt.
Fjera defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Reilly.
Fjera lands a head kick. Reilly smiles back at him and beckons him forward.

It looks like Iain Reilly has been cut.

Fjera catches Reilly with a right, a left, a right. It's raining punches and Reilly forgot an umbrella! Another punch and he's down. This one is over!
