PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Dao Sonnen (ranked 45 p4p, 6 weight class) and Lee Sin (ranked 286 p4p, 39 weight class). Sonnen comes to the cage accompanied by The Devil's Doorbell. Sin has chosen Original Nuttah as his entrance music. Both fighters look pumped up here. Let's hope this is a good fight!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 38 - 16 - 1, fighting out of Los Angeles, Dao Sonnen!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 31 - 14 - 3, fighting out of London, Lee Sin!
The judges for this bout are William Gold, Andrew Berry and Richard Clark.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
A swing and a miss from Sin.
Sin lands a right hook to the body.
Sin misses with a body shot.
Sonnen lands a leg kick and bounces back out of range.
Sonnen swinging wildly here.
Sonnen waving his hands out in front of him, looking to distract Sin.
Sin throws a nice inside leg kick.
Sonnen lands a nice looking body shot.
Sin ducks under a wild hook from Sonnen.
A chopping leg kick lands by Sonnen.
Sonnen thuds his right hand into Sin's forehead from close range. That could be painful for both fighters.
Sonnen has been working on his boxing with his coaches at Chakuriki LA Gym in the buildup to the fight.

Sonnen closes the distance and clinches.
Sonnen is working for a takedown up against the cage. He can't get it on this occasion though.
Sin lands with a light punch inside.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Sonnen throws a head punch that misses.
Sonnen is trying to drag Sin to the mat but Sin just about manages to keep his footing. He used the cage to his advantage there.

Sin misses with a shot to the kidneys.

Sonnen blocks a punch to the side of the head.
Sonnen blocks a couple of punches on the inside.
A right hook to the body lands for Sin.

Sin has his head snapped back a nice jab. A little nod from Sin there as he acknowledges the shot.
Sonnen has his hands up protecting his head but a hook from Sin finds it's way round the side to connect with Sonnen's head.

A kick lands to the mid section there for Sin.

Sin moves out of range as Sonnen strikes.
Sonnen takes a jab on the nose. He smiles like he loves it and keeps coming.

An inside leg kick lands from Sonnen.
Sin lands a glancing blow to the side of Sonnen's head.
Sin is looking to clinch but Sonnen is avoiding it.
Sonnen walks straight into an uppercut. Luckily it didn't land flush.
Sonnen uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Sin.
Sin lands a nice looking body kick.
Sin throws a leg kick
and Sonnen counters with a lovely straight right hand!
Sonnen throws a leg kick but Sin sees it coming and moves out of range.
Sonnen fakes a jab and throws a low kick but Sin checks it well.
Sin misses with a straight left.
Sin moves out of range of the body kick from Sonnen.
Sonnen connects with a high kick.
Sonnen throws a hook but Sin blocks it.
Sonnen fakes a couple of low kicks, before throwing one on the third attempt. It connects and Sin has to reset his feet before getting ready to engage.
Dao Sonnen seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Sin swings wildly with a right hand that was never going to find it's target.
Sonnen thows a left - swing and a miss!
Sonnen scores with a jab to the head.

Sonnen closes the distance and clinches.
Sin tries to throw a body punch but Sonnen avoids it by throwing Sin back against the cage.
Sonnen misses with a hook to the ribs.
Sin lands a body shot.
Sonnen tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Dao Sonnen. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Sin lands with a short head shot on the inside.

Sonnen lands punches inside but they're not really causing much damage.

Lee Sin is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Sonnen throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land.
Sonnen swings for the body but Sin moves out of range.
Sonnen uses good head movement to avoid the hook from Sin.
Sin throws a body kick despite being completely out of range
and Sonnen counters with a good, hard body kick but Sin shrugs it off.
Good exchange - Sonnen coming out on top.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Sonnen throws a lazy right hand but Sin sees it coming a mile off and sidesteps it easily.
Sonnen is really peppering his opponent's head with punches.
Sonnen throws a push kick but Sin slaps the foot to one side.

Sonnen fakes a jab and throws a low kick but Sin checks it well.

Sin rushes Sonnen and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.
Sonnen lands with a quick shot inside that doesn't really do much damage.
Sonnen tries a body shot but Sin blocks it.
Sin blocks a couple of punches on the inside.
Sin can't find room to land a body shot as Sonnen controls the action.
Sonnen misses with a punch to the body.
Sin throws a head punch that misses.
A right hand to the body from Sonnen.
Sonnen blocks a body shot from Sin.

Sonnen escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Sin defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Sonnen.
Sonnen shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
A swing and a miss from Sin.
Sin goes for a spinning back kick but it misses.
The crowd applaud the fighters' efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Sonnen displays some good footwork, moving neatly out of range as Sin throws out the jab.
Sin throws a front kick aimed at Sonnen's knee but Sonnen avoids it well.
Sin thumps Sonnen with a low kick.
Sonnen wants to slow Sin down by chopping away at his legs.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Dao Sonnen will probably get the nod.
Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin!


Sin moves away from the strike by Sonnen.
A slow jab from Sonnen misses its intended target.
Sin does a little shimmy and throws a leg kick. The leg kick missed by a considerable margin though, making him look a little bit silly for doing the shimmy.
Sin loads up on a big right hand but Sonnen slips the punch.
Sonnen takes a step back and watches a body kick go sailing past his mid section.
Sin throws an overhand right that lands on Sonnen's shoulder, as Sonnen tries to avoid the shot.
Sonnen is looking to counter punch.
Sonnen fails with the takedown
and Sin cracks him with a counter punch right on the button.

Sonnen cracks Sin with a right hand to the side of the head.
Sonnen misses with a body kick.
Sin is looking to score with low kicks.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Sin throws an uppercut from half a mile away. Sonnen sees it coming and avoids it easily.
A little feinted left hand from Sonnen on the counter but he doesn't commit to it.

Sonnen throws a leg kick but Sin sees it coming and checks it nicely.

Sin lands with a right hand.

Sin's jab looks to have found its range, popping Sonnen under the eye.

Sin jabs Sonnen to the body, keeping him at a distance.
Lee Sin seems to be getting the better of the standup.
Sonnen jabbing away but nothing is landing.
Sin appears to be waiting to throw a counter punch to the body.

Sin lands with a shot to the body.
Sin misses with an uppercut.
Sonnen looked to counter that last move with a leg kick but didn't pull the trigger.
Sin throws a push kick but Sonnen slaps the foot to one side.

and Sin counters with a good, hard body kick but Sonnen shrugs it off.
Sin lands with an overhand left.

The fighters are starting to get sweaty, which will make takedowns a bit more tricky.
Sonnen throws a right hand that misses
and Sin counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw.
Sonnen throws a body kick that digs right into the meat.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Sin comes forward and lands a shot to the body, then darts back out of range.
Left hook, right uppercut from Sin.

Sin fakes and then throws a beautiful body shot. Sonnen looks a bit winded and takes a step backwards to take a breath.
Sin misses with a straight left.
Sonnen drops his hands momentarily and Sin takes advantage with a crisp shot to the head.
Sonnen checks the leg kick nicely there.

Sonnen shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat.
Sin looking for a sweep. Not yet Sin, not yet.
Sin is doing well to control the posture of his opponent and prevent any damage.
Sin is trying to control the position but Sonnen postures up.

Sonnen drops back, looking for a kneebar! Sin looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Sin looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Sin!

Sonnen is trying to improve his position.
Sin is looking to take a break and control but Sonnen is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Sonnen is moving his hips around well on the bottom and has managed to get back to half guard.
Sin is looking to advance position but Sonnen won't allow it.
Sin is keen to just control but Sonnen is a slippery customer.
Sin seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.

Sin has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Sonnen wants to get back to full guard.
Sin takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Sin wants to pass to mount but Sonnen is defending the position.
Sin wants to lay and pray for a moment but Sonnen keeps working.
Sin perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.
If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup.
Sonnen is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Sin slows the pace down in half guard.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Lee Sin showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business. This is the final round!


Sonnen throws a half hearted mid kick.
Sonnen misses with a looping right.
Sin turns his hip over beautifully as he lands a nice leg kick.
A slapping body kick lands there for Sin.
Sonnen throws a solid leg kick but Sin takes the impact on his shin and smiles at Sonnen.
Sin ducks under a wild hook from Sonnen.
Sonnen shoots in looking for a takedown. Sin tries to sprawl out of it but Sonnen keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Sin manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Sin throws an uppercut from half a mile away. Sonnen sees it coming and avoids it easily.
Some bone on bone action there as Sin checks a low kick. Luckily it wasn't a particularly hard one.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

And Sonnen counters with a quick kick to the body but Sin blocks it.
Sin avoids a low kick by using good footwork.
Sin digs a good body shot into Sonnen's ribs.
Sonnen scores with a jab to the body.
Sonnen loads up on a big right hand but Sin slips the punch.
Crunch! Sin slams his shin into Sonnen's torso.
Sonnen moves out of range as Sin throws a body kick.
It looked like Sonnen wanted to counter with a hook but didn't fully commit.
Sin gets cracked with a nice right hand there by Sonnen.
A looping hook to the body misses from Sin. Sonnen does a little dance to reset his feet.
Sonnen avoids a lazy jab quite easily.
Sonnen throws an overhand right that lands on Sin's shoulder, as Sin tries to avoid the shot.

Sin with a nice looking leg kick. You could hear that one land in a back row.

and Sin counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Sin connects with a leg kick. He turned his hip over nicely there.
Sonnen rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Sin moves out of range and avoids them all easily.
Sin looks like he wants to counter punch here.
Sin throws a leg kick that is checked
and Sonnen counters with a nice uppercut.
Sin keeping a good distance there, avoiding the body shot.
Sonnen jabbing away but nothing is landing.

Sonnen feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.

Sonnen keeping moving, preventing Sin from controlling successfully.
Sin is stalling in the full guard.
Sin stands and throws Sonnen's legs to the side, diving into side control.
Sonnen is letting Sin control him for a moment.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Sin is continuing to stall.
Sonnen is trying to get back to half guard. He's pushing on Sin's leg. He's managed it. Nice work.
Sin passes to full mount!
Sonnen is looking to improve his position but Sin isn't that keen on the idea.
Sin looking to control and managing it successfully.

And that's the end of the fight!
Lee Sin comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Sin has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.

Our winner, Lee Sin, made sure he spent some time buttering up the crowd during his post fight interview, which will no doubt bring him a few more fans.
Dao Sonnen was interviewed post fight and said 'Wow! He was the fighter I've ever faced, hands down......as he holds up Shin's hand. "That Shin is the best"'.
