PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Duke Johnson (ranked 3610 p4p, 381 weight class) and Jack Holloway (ranked 3180 p4p, 352 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Duke Johnson!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 2 - 0, fighting out of New York, Jack Holloway!
The judges for this bout are Timothy Bukovac, Don Winkell and Frank Antenori.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Johnson misses with a body shot.
Holloway shoots in looking for a takedown. Johnson tries to sprawl out of it but Holloway keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Johnson manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.

Holloway darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.
Holloway seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Johnson is looking for a sweep. Holloway is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.

The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Holloway connects with a nice short shot to Johnson's temple.

In the pre-fight buildup videos we saw Holloway working his ground and pound in the gym. So far it seems to be working well.

Holloway postures up and cracks his opponent a couple of times before moving back into close ground control. Johnson looks a forlorn figure.

Johnson is desperately trying to get back to half guard.
Holloway has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.

Holloway swats away the attempt to clinch by Johnson.
Johnson lands a slapping body shot.

Holloway throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Johnson tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Holloway is in Johnson's guard.

Holloway drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Holloway jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.

The step up in weight doesn't seem to be a problem for Holloway. He's performing admirably here against the bigger man.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

Holloway is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Johnson defends it well.

Holloway decides to stand and escape the position.
Holloway looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Johnson is fending him off so far but Holloway persists. Nope, Johnson circles away and we're back to standing.

Holloway tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Johnson paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Holloway fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Johnson avoids it really well and circles away.
Holloway closes the distance and clinches up with Johnson, looking for a takedown. Holloway pushes Johnson against the cage but Johnson circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Duke Johnson has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Jack Holloway.
Holloway will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
Johnson stuffs the takedown attempt from Holloway. Holloway gets slowly back to his feet.

Holloway bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.

Johnson tries to get back to half guard but can't.
Holloway looks up at the clock and then as Johnson takes his cue and looks up at the clock too, Holloway smacks him right in the chops with a big elbow! How rude!
Holloway has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

Holloway is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Johnson knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.
Holloway is chipping away with strikes.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Jack Holloway showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! This is the final round!

Holloway decides to stand back up. Holloway steps back and let's Johnson get back to his feet.
Johnson shoots for a double leg takedown but Holloway sprawls well. He's pushed Johnson's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.

Johnson moves into the clinch successfully.
Holloway blocks a knee to the body. He'll have a nicely bruised forearm in the morning.

Holloway has moved round to his opponent's back and is looking for a suplex! Oh snap! He's tossed Johnson clear over his head and slammed him to the mat!

Johnson just trying to survive but Holloway is wriggling into a better position, looking to finish.
Holloway controlling the position well here. Johnson rolled but Holloway kept the hooks locked in and stayed in the dominant position.

Holloway wants to control but Johnson is keeping busy.

Holloway is looking cool and calm here, just waiting for a good opportunity to attack and finish the fight from this dominant position.

Holloway really has the hooks in deep now - there seems like no escape for Johnson.
Duke Johnson has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Jack Holloway is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.
