PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Mantak Garuda (ranked 210 p4p, 27 weight class) and Jan Sobieski (ranked 403 p4p, 59 weight class). Garuda comes to the cage accompanied by Djiin Djiin. Jan Sobieski told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the light heavyweight championship of the world!
Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 8 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Mantak Garuda!
And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 8 - 1 - 0, fighting out of London, Jan Sobieski!
The judges for this bout are Andrew Berry, James Atkins and Sam Margolis.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
A telegraphed right hand from Garuda misses the target.
Garuda throws a jab to the body, straight down the pipe. Boom. That sent Sobieski stumbling backwards but he manages to regain his composure quickly.

Sobieski looking to score a takedown here. Garuda is defending well but Sobieski drives through and ends up in Garuda's guard.
Sobieski controlling from the top position.
Garuda tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Garuda is pulling down on Sobieski's head. It's preventing any offense from Sobieski, at least for the moment.
Sobieski sitting in guard, not really doing much.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
It looks like Sobieski might be adopting somewhat of a lay and pray gameplan here, which I'm sure won't go down too well with the paying fans in attendance... Or the ring announcers come to think of it.

Garuda wants to stand but Sobieski is controlling the position.
The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
Garuda avoids the body shot from Sobieski.
And Garuda counters with a quick kick to the body but Sobieski blocks it.
Sobieski scores with a shot to the body.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Garuda comes forward and lands a shot to the body, then darts back out of range.
Garuda throws a big shot that misses.
Garuda throws a low kick but Sobieski avoids it.
Jan Sobieski seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Garuda throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Sobieski attempts a low kick but it misses it's target.
Garuda throws a nice hook to the body that draws an oooh from the crowd.
We've been told by Garuda's head coaches at The Wild Beasts Zoo that he's been working on his takedown defense in preparation for this fight.
Garuda misses with a body kick.
Sobieski with the counter takedown but Garuda avoids it easily.
Garuda misses with a low kick.
Garuda wants to land a leg kick but Sobieski is out of range.
Garuda looks for the body kick but Sobieski saw that one coming.
Mantak Garuda is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.

Sobieski tries to score with a low kick but Garuda moves his leg out of the way.

Sobieski darts in and out, connecting with a jab.
Sobieski misses the shot to the body.
Garuda throws a body kick but he was well out of range there.
A big right from Garuda misses.
Some bone on bone action there as Sobieski checks a low kick. Luckily it wasn't a particularly hard one.
Garuda throws out a leg kick but Sobieski moves out of range and Garuda only half commits.
Sobieski misses with a two punch combination.
Sobieski fails miserably with a takedown attempt.

Garuda misses with a hook.
Sobieski throws a leg kick but Garuda sees it coming and moves out of range.
Garuda misses with a body kick.
Sobieski takes a nice looking leg kick right on the meat of his thigh there.
Sobieski on the wrong end of a vicious looking body shot.
Garuda lands a jab-cross combination.


It looks like Jan Sobieski has been cut.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Sobieski does a little shimmy and throws a leg kick. The leg kick missed by a considerable margin though, making him look a little bit silly for doing the shimmy.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Sobieski scores with a body shot.
Garuda chopped to the floor by a nice leg kick but he springs right back up before Sobieski can pounce on him.
Sobieski misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!

It looked like Garuda wanted to counter with a hook but didn't fully commit.

Garuda clobbers Sobieski with an overhand right that has the crowd gasping. That made a horrendous noise.

and Garuda counters with a solid body kick.

A head kick by Sobieski misses
and Garuda comes in over the top with a devastating right hand! Sobieski stumbles back against the cage, looking to regain his senses but Garuda is on him like rabid pit bull! Sobieski slumps to the ground under a storm of punches and this fight is over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:10 of round 2, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Mantak Garuda!
Mantak Garuda retains his light heavyweight title!
During a confident post fight interview, Mantak Garuda thanked all his fans. He seemed very genuine when describing how motivated his fans keep him.
