PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Rick Piano (ranked 104 p4p, 16 weight class) and Doug Bell (ranked 199 p4p, 29 weight class). Piano 's entrance music is Rick going ham on a bitch. A fine choice. Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 21 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Rick Piano !
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 21 - 8 - 0, fighting out of New York, Doug Bell!
The judges for this bout are Sam Margolis, Steven Brown and William Gold.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
The fighters circling - Bell throws out the jab but it was never going to land.
Bell takes a solid shot to the body. That one hurt him but he's trying not to show it.

Bell changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Piano looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.
Bell tries to land with some ground and pound but misses.
Bell sitting in side control, looking to soften his opponent up with elbows and hammerfists but Piano is avoiding damage well and looking to escape the position.
Bell lands a knee to the body and follows it up with some ground and pound to the head. That will wear Piano down.
Piano takes a nasty elbow to the side of the head.
Bell has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.

Bell creates some space and throws a big elbow, but Piano sees it coming and moves his head just enough to avoid the strike.

Piano parries the strikes from Bell easily there. Bell is wary of posturing up too much because it might enable Piano to escape.

Bell connects with a decent looking elbow from side control that caused Piano some visible discomfort.
Bell tries to score with some ground and pound. Piano controls his posture well this time though and the shots don't do any damage.

Piano dodges the ground and pound from Bell.
Bell lands a knee to the body and follows it up with some ground and pound to the head. That will wear Piano down.

Bell looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything.

Piano manages to work his way to half guard, despite Bell's best efforts.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
Piano gets cracked there but stands up to it.

We've been told by Piano 's head coaches at Power Shark Gym that he's been working on his takedown defense in preparation for this fight.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Bell lands a jab followed by a nice looking cross.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Bell is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Piano 's half guard.
Piano keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Doug Bell dominated that round.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!


Piano takes a swing at Bell's ribcage but misses.
Bell looked like he wanted to counter with a punch but didn't throw it.
Bell throws a hook but Piano blocks it.

Bell shoots in and gets a takedown into Piano 's guard.
Doug Bell has got the better of the ground game so far.

Bell stands up over Piano , holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head.

Piano looking for a guillotine here but Bell defends easily.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Bell throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent.

Bell makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard.
Bell lands a couple of elbows.

Bell postures up in Piano 's guard and throws a big left but Piano blocks it.
Bell is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
The step up in weight doesn't seem to be a problem for Bell. He's performing admirably here against the bigger man.
Sloppy strikes from Bell. Those never looked like landing.
Bell has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Piano throws a hook to the side of Bell's head but Bell sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully.

Doug Bell seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

A punch lands to the side of Piano 's head but he takes it in his stride.

Bell lands a beauty of a right hand that gets the crowd cheering.

and Piano counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw.
Bell takes a step back and watches a body kick go sailing past his mid section.
It seemed like Bell was going to counter with the hook but didn't fully commit to it.

Piano shakes his hands off, looking to compose himself, but takes a jab to the jaw whilst he does it.

Bell misses with a few strikes there.
And Piano counters with a quick kick to the body but Bell blocks it.
Bell scores with a punch to the gut of his opponent.

Bell throws a right hand that misses
and Piano counters with a nice body kick.
Bell is breathing heavily.
Piano slips under a jab.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Bell is defended easily by Piano .
A jab lands there for Bell.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Doug Bell showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business. Let's hear some noise people - this is the final round!

Bell punishes Piano 's body with a nice straight punch.
Piano takes a punch right to his stomach. That took the wind out of him momentarily.

Bell has his head snapped back a nice jab. A little nod from Bell there as he acknowledges the shot.

Piano pivots as if he's going to throw a leg kick but stops half way.
Piano loads up on a big right hand but Bell slips the punch.
Bell connects with a lovely right hand, straight down the pipe.

Bell lands with a right hand.

Piano closes the distance and clinches.
Bell throws a blind hook that connects with the side of Piano s head.
Bell presses Piano against the cage and delivers a mid-strength body shot.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Piano 's head jolts backwards as he takes an uppercut right on the button!
Rick Piano has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

Bell misses with some punches.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

Bell escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Piano is using his height advantage well here, landing a good percentage of his punches.
Piano tries to clinch but Bell is having none of it.
Doug Bell seems to be getting the better of the standup.
Piano on the wrong end of a decent looking cross there.
Piano is pinned up against the cage taking some big shots here. The referee is looking closely deciding whether he should stop the fight.
Bell throws a body kick that misses.
Piano appears to be looking for a counter punch to the body.
Piano avoids the head kick by Bell.
Piano gets cracked with a nice right hand there by Bell.
Bell lands a lovely overhand right.
Bell clobbers Piano with an overhand right that has the crowd gasping. That made a horrendous noise.
Bell swings wildly with a right hand that was never going to find it's target.

and Piano counters by moving into the clinch.
Bell struggles to land a body shot inside as Piano controls his hands.
Bell has a couple of punches blocked by Piano .
Piano throws a nice elbow but it doesn't land.

Bell stays in close to his opponent and throws a right hand to the body.

Bell is trying to break the clinch but Piano is controlling him.
Bell lands with a short shot to the head.

It looks like Doug Bell has been cut.
Bell gets through Piano 's defenses to land a nice punch to the side of the head.
Bell tries to land a shot to the body but it's blocked.
Bell lands a hook to the side of the head.
Piano throws a nice elbow but it doesn't land.
Piano lands a damaging elbow.

Bell breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Piano looks like he's developed a pretty tasty lump over his left eye. He'll need to avoid taking much more damage to that.
Bell's corner calls for a 1-2. Bell obliges with the 1 part as he scores the single shot and moves back out of range.
Doug Bell is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.
Bell connects with a crisp jab.

Bell scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Piano is looking for a sweep.
Bell moving around in side mount but really he's just happy to control for now.

Bell's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.
Bell grinds an elbow into Piano 's temple.
Bell working the ground and pound.
Bell looking to control but instead Piano has slipped a leg in, to regain half guard.
Bell takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.
Bell passes the half guard and he's now in mount! Big trouble for Piano !
Piano is working to get back to half guard.

And that's the end of the fight!
Doug Bell comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Bell has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
