Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Shoju Bayushi (ranked 833 p4p, 104 weight class) and John Starman (ranked 1167 p4p, 144 weight class). Bayushi comes to the cage accompanied by Scorpions - Always Somewhere. Starman comes into a darkened arena with his song building. David Bowie - Starman kicks in, the lights come on and the crowd goes wild! What a showman! The crowd giving both fighters a great reception on their way into the arena. That's good to see.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 6 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Shoju Bayushi!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 15 - 10 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, John Starman!
The judges for this bout are , Don Winkell and Jack Bonds.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
A telegraphed right hand from Bayushi misses the target.
Bayushi misses with a hook. Starman ducked under it nicely.
Starman tries to clinch but Bayushi moves out of range.
Bayushi has been working on his boxing with his coaches at Rokugan in the buildup to the fight.
Starman connects with a crisp jab.
Nice defenses there by Starman.
Shoju Bayushi seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Bayushi blocks a jab.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Bayushi enables Starman to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Bayushi manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.
Bayushi is looking to stand back up... there's a bit of a scramble and Starman dives into side control.

Starman advances to full mount.

Starman jumps to the side looking to secure the arm triangle…. Ooooh, that looks tight… Bayushi is gargling but he's managed to escape! Nice work there by Bayushi and Starman has given up the dominant position trying to land that submission.
My spies in Team Beta Fail inform me that Starman has been getting involved in the gym's BJJ sparring sessions. Let's see whether that pays dividends!
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Bayushi tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Starman wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.

Starman lands a decent elbow from side control.
Bayushi knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Starman on the ground.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Starman tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.
Starman postures up a little and throws a couple of hammerfists but they don't connect properly.
Starman is chipping away with strikes.
Bayushi tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Starman wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Bayushi taking punishment in the form of punches.
Bayushi tries to improve position but can't.
Bayushi tries to control the position but he's not in luck - Starman easily slips into full mount!
Bayushi is working to get back to half guard.
Bayushi is working hard here to advance position.
Starman has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
Starman lands a heavy elbow.
Bayushi is looking to improve his position but Starman isn't that keen on the idea.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Bayushi takes a big shot to the head but keeps on trying to improve his position.


Bayushi is rocked!
Starman connects with a bit shot that sees Bayushi covering up! More strikes from Starman and the referee jumps in to stop the fight! Starman is our winner by TKO!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:32 of round 1, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). John Starman!
An out of breath John Starman thanked his loyal fans in his post fight interview, giving them credit for his success over the course of his career.
Shoju Bayushi was interviewed post fight and said 'The biggest thing I learned from losing? Winning is better.'.
