PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Sergey Burenkov (ranked 2128 p4p, 250 weight class) and Pedro Chang (ranked 2130 p4p, 251 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 5 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Sergey Burenkov!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 4 - 1, fighting out of St Petersburg, Pedro Chang!
The judges for this bout are Paulo Santos, Emerson Jorge and Matheus Silva.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Burenkov manages to get an easy takedown there - catching Chang on his heels. He'll look to pass Chang's guard now, I'm sure.
Burenkov pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Chang is keeping the position for now.
Chang pulls Burenkov in close to his closed guard and prevents Burenkov from doing any damage or advancing position.
Chang keeping moving, preventing Burenkov from controlling successfully.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Chang wants to stand but Burenkov is controlling the position.
Burenkov wants to control from the top but Chang keeps moving.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Chang wants to get back to his feet but Burenkov is in a dominant position and won't allow it.

No joy there for Chang, who threw a few shots but didn't land.

Chang tries to land knees in the clinch but Burenkov avoids the damage to the body.

Chang tries to land a knee to the body but he is off balance and Burenkov avoids it.
Burenkov blocks a punch to the side of the head.

Chang is looking to score with knees to the body. Maybe he'll change it up and go body then head. Burenkov is defending well for now.

I was talking to Burenkov's coach per-fight and he was telling me that they'd been working on the clinch in the runup to this fight.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Chang works for underhooks and lands a body shot in the process.

Chang is pressed up against the cage. Burenkov has hold of a leg and is looking to drag Chang down to the mat. Chang avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Sergey Burenkov. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Burenkov shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Chang as he avoids it easily.
Burenkov takes a solid shot to the body. That one hurt him but he's trying not to show it.
Burenkov comes forward and lands a shot to the body, then darts back out of range.
Chang fakes and then throws a beautiful body shot. Burenkov looks a bit winded and takes a step backwards to take a breath.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Burenkov is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Chang is just riding it out for now. Burenkov eventually gives up the hold.

Burenkov content to control rather than advance.

Burenkov is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Chang defends it well.

Chang sneaks a leg back under and regains half guard and is working straight away to try and get back to guard. He hasn't managed just yet though.

Burenkov wants to work for an arm triangle but Chang is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.
Burenkov wants to lay and pray for a moment but Chang keeps working.

Chang won't allow Burenkov to pass to mount.

We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.

Burenkov is in full mount, looking to secure a guillotine but Chang is surviving well by controlling Burenkov's body position as best he can.
Chang is squirming around, avoiding Burenkov's attempts to control the action.

Burenkov is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Chang has escaped the position, nice work there.
Chang gives up the full mount - oops, sloppy defensive grappling there!
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Chang is in all sorts of trouble here.

Chang lands a lovely overhand right.
A punch combination from Burenkov misses.
Chang lets it all go there with a big combo counter but none of the punches connected.
Nice sprawl there from Chang as Burenkov shoots in.
Burenkov dips down and scores with a jab to the body.
Chang throws a jab to the body, straight down the pipe. Boom. That sent Burenkov stumbling backwards but he manages to regain his composure quickly.
Chang takes a solid shot to the body. That one hurt him but he's trying not to show it.

Chang comes over the top with an elbow. That landed flush.

Chang has been looking to improve his clinch game in recent weeks. Burenkov seems to have the measure of him in the clinch so far, so let's see if Chang can turn it around.
