PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Zuillnic Canto (ranked 1594 p4p, 217 weight class) and Chris Harper (ranked 1197 p4p, 166 weight class). Chris Harper is the more experienced fighter, so let's see if that makes a difference tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 7 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Zuillnic Canto!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 13 - 12 - 0, fighting out of London, Chris Harper!
The judges for this bout are Wesley Smith, Stewart Dunkirk and Chris Downing.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Canto gets a double leg takedown into Harper's guard.
Harper keeping full guard, as Canto tries to pass.
Canto is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.
Canto has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.
Canto pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Harper is keeping the position for now.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

The fighters are tangled up in the ropes here. We might need a restart if the fighters can't break free themselves.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.
Harper ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Canto moves away.

and Canto takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles.

Canto feints and as Harper raises his hands in defense, Canto changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.

Canto is looking to advance position but Harper has hit a scissor sweep - now he's on top in mount!

Canto tries to get back to half guard but can't.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Canto wants to control but Harper is having none of it.

Canto bucks up and manages to get a nice reversal! He's in guard on the top - nicely done!

Harper really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Canto. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Canto tries to free his leg and advance position but Harper is retaining full guard.

Canto drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Canto jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Zuillnic Canto will probably get the nod.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!


Harper throws a shot to the body.

Canto shoots in and bounces Harper off the ropes to secure the takedown into guard.
Canto trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.

Canto stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Harper swivels though and keeps the full guard.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Canto wants to control from the top but Harper keeps moving.
Harper can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Canto controls the pace.

Canto has gone for a leg lock! Harper slips out almost immediately though and dives into Canto's guard.

Canto looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.

Canto moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.
Harper has been taking part in the yoga sessions down at Pablo's Boxing Academy. Presumably he's going to look for a slick submission... Or maybe he's looking to avoid one.
Canto wants to sweep but no luck.
Harper wants to control from the top but Canto keeps moving.

Canto is looking for a triangle but Harper pushes his legs off easily.
The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring.
Canto is trying to control the position from the bottom.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

Canto looks to be working for a triangle here. Oh, it looks like he might have it! Harper has picked Canto up and slammed him! Canto can't keep hold of the triangle and Harper manages to pass to side control!

Canto wants to control but Harper is keeping busy.

Canto actively working from the bottom here.
Canto is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Canto is not content to let Harper control the position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Zuillnic Canto will probably get the nod.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! And we move into the final round!

Harper walks straight into a jab right on the nose. That one stung - he's blinking and trying to clear his head.
Canto misses with a hook to the body
and Harper makes him pay by landing a nice hook to the body before moving out of range.
Harper is throwing a lot of body shots here, looking to wear down Canto rather than just go for the knockout.
Harper loads up on a big right hand but Canto slips the punch.

Canto throws an overhand right that lands on Harper's shoulder, as Harper tries to avoid the shot.

Harper lands with an overhand left.
Harper throws an overhand right that lands on Canto's shoulder, as Canto tries to avoid the shot.

Canto shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Harper's guard.
Canto advances position into side control!

That's one minute gone in the round.
Harper regains half guard there - taking advantage of Canto's attempt to lay and pray for a moment.
Canto wants to take a breather but Harper is having none of it.
Canto stalling.

Canto is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Harper defends it well.
Canto is thwarting Harper's attempts to control the position.
Chris Harper has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Canto is trying to control the action in half guard but Harper is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.

Canto is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.
Canto is trying to control. Harper wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.
Harper wants to get back to full guard.
Canto seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Harper does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
Canto has freed up his trapped foot and advances to mount.
Zuillnic Canto overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Canto has hold of Harper's left arm, perhaps looking for a submission. The two fighters tussle over control of the isolated limb and Harper manages to get his arm back to his side and away from danger.

Harper staying busy and making it hard for Canto to control.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

Harper trying to control the hands but Canto won't let him.
Zuillnic Canto is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
Harper is in a world of trouble here. He's outmatched on the ground here and he'd better get Canto off his back sharpish unless he wants to be submitted.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Zuillnic Canto showed his dominance in that final round.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Canto, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.

Zuillnic Canto was full of energy after the big win and talked about how he thinks he can do big things in this sport. The crowd were appreciative of his determination to succeed.
