PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Demetrius Shaffer (ranked 4718 p4p, 0 weight class) and Alex Kent (ranked 4841 p4p, 0 weight class). Kent is bouncing up and down as he enters the arena, backed by Ready for war. Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Demetrius Shaffer!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Alex Kent!
The judges for this bout are , Jack Bonds and Don Winkell.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Kent closes the distance and after a bit of a stuggle, scores a takedown into Shaffer's guard.

Shaffer has butterfly guard. He's looking to stand up here. He pushes Kent off him and springs to his feet nicely. The crowd applauds.
Shaffer is looking to clinch but Kent is avoiding it.
Kent is looking for the big counter here.
Alex Kent seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Kent leaves Shaffer with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Shaffer has a takedown stuffed.

Kent throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Shaffer tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Kent is in Shaffer's guard.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Kent is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.
Kent scores with a decent looking elbow strike.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

Shaffer tries to keep at a distance but Kent has taken the fight into the clinch.
Shaffer is trying to push Kent away but Kent has him pressed against the cage, so he's going nowhere.

Kent breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
A combination from Kent does no damage.

Kent drives through and clinches with Shaffer against the cage.
The referee calls for Shaffer to work.
Shaffer could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.

Kent has hold of one of Shaffer's legs. Shaffer is fighting the takedown attempt but Kent gets the trip and lands the takedown into guard.

Shaffer is edging up against the cage. He's using the cage to get back to his feet. Nice work there - the fighters are clinched.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
An uppercut on the inside fails to land for Shaffer.
Shaffer goes for a takedown in the clinch but Kent prevents it.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Demetrius Shaffer. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Kent manages to break the clinch.
Kent tries to land a leg kick but Shaffer saw it coming and moves away.

Kent drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.
Kent is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Shaffer keeping moving, preventing Kent from controlling successfully.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Kent decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Alex Kent dominated that round.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!



Kent takes the fight into the clinch.
Shaffer scores with a nice hook to the head.

Kent works for the underhooks and manages to get a trip takedown into guard.
Kent trying to pass the guard. He's being very persistent here but Shaffer manages to land a sweep and now he's on top!

Kent wants to sweep here but Shaffer controlling him for the moment.
Kent has a closed guard, preventing anything of note from happening. Perhaps he's looking to stall.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Shaffer postures up in Kent's guard and throws a big left but Kent blocks it.

Kent is pulling down on Shaffer's head to control his posture.

Kent is scooting his butt against the cage and has managed to get back to his feet. Shaffer presses him back against the cage, presumably looking to take the fight back to the mat.
Shaffer blocks an elbow strike.

Kent jumps guard and drags Shaffer to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back.
Shaffer trying to stand up but can't free himself from Kent's guard.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Shaffer accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
Shaffer content to strike from guard, landing some decent shots.
Shaffer throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Kent works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
Kent avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.

Shaffer got a little sloppy there for a moment and Kent has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Shaffer has managed to get both his arms back between Kent's legs - danger averted.
Shaffer throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Kent works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
Shaffer has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Shaffer in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.

Shaffer stops Kent from standing up.
Kent avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
Kent working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Shaffer.
Shaffer working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.
Shaffer postures up and scores with a shot to the body and a follow up elbow to the head.
Kent is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.
Shaffer might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Kent holds on and takes a little breather.
Shaffer throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent.
Kent seems keen to control rather than go for a submission, at least for now.
Shaffer loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.

Shaffer fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Kent, pushing him back against the cage.

Shaffer connects with a nasty looking knee right to Kent's face.

Kent gets a nice trip takedown into half guard.

Kent is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Shaffer doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Kent.
Kent is breathing heavily.
Kent tries to pass to full mount but Shaffer defends it.
Shaffer controlling the position well.

Kent seems to have lost interest with the ground game and is thinking about standing back up.
Kent wants to stand up but Shaffer manages to regain full guard.
Shaffer keeping moving, preventing Kent from controlling successfully.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Kent wants to pass the guard but Shaffer is keeping the position.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Demetrius Shaffer will probably get the nod.

Kent moves into the clinch.

Kent pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.

Kent shoots in for a takedown and gets it.

Shaffer manages to escape and get back to his feet!

The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

Kent decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.
Shaffer has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Kent is working away from the top position though.

Kent seems to have lost interest with the ground game and is thinking about standing back up.
Kent is taking a breather. Shaffer says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.
Kent throws a strike but Shaffer avoids it easily and moves to full guard.
Kent scores with a decent looking elbow strike.
Hammerfist, elbow! yells Kent's corner. There ya go! There ya go!
Kent is stalling in the full guard.
Shaffer preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Shaffer is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Kent seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.

Kent shoots in and scores a nice double leg takedown into half guard.
Alex Kent has got the better of the ground game so far.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Kent is just sitting in half guard, waiting for something to happen.

Kent's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.
Shaffer preventing any damage for now, controlling his opponent's head.
Kent is figuring out what he wants to do next.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Kent missing with some ground and pound from the half guard.
Shaffer is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Kent's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Kent's back!
Shaffer thows a huge left but connects with the canvas and not his opponent.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Kent manages to reverse the position and now he's in Shaffer's guard. Nice work there by Kent.
Kent postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Shaffer utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Demetrius Shaffer.
I think Shaffer has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.

Alex Kent decided to go for the less than humble approach in his post fight interview, telling everyone how he is going to conquer the world. The crowd seemed to like it when really that sort of approach could have gone either way.
