PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Royce Gracie (ranked 2896 p4p, 0 weight class) and Riley Johnson (ranked 20609 p4p, 0 weight class). Gracie comes to the cage accompanied by Jiu Jitsu by Smoke Serpent. The atmosphere really building for this one as we go over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 22 - 11 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Royce Gracie!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 5 - 8 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Riley Johnson!
The judges for this bout are Alexandre Firmino, Paulo Santos and Luis Engracia.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Both fighters are only really looking to counter, so after a good 30 seconds of circling eachother endlessly, the referee has stepped in and told them both to be more aggressive.
Gracie shoots for a takedown but Johnson saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Johnson scoring well with a low kick there.
Gracie with a lazy takedown attempt
and Johnson connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.

Johnson misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.

Gracie drives through with a takedown into guard.
Gracie stops Johnson from standing up.

Gracie decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Johnson, up you get!

Johnson swings away with a counter right hand but no contact made.

Gracie shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Johnson's guard.

Gracie stands and steps away. Johnson gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.

Johnson throws a sloppy head kick and Gracie moves out of range easily.
Gracie went nuts there looking for a big combo counter but none of the flurry connected.

Gracie shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Johnson manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.
Johnson controls Gracie momentarily but Gracie frees himself.

Gracie gets to his feet - Johnson follows without any prompting.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Johnson throws a body shot but no joy.
Johnson throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
Gracie appears to be looking for a big counter.
Johnson leaves Gracie with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Johnson only half commits to the counter leg kick.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Riley Johnson will probably get the nod.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!


Johnson tries to bum rush Gracie with a series of wild strikes but Gracie uses good footwork to avoid the assault.
As Johnson looks to move away, Gracie throws a big counter combo but Johnson just gets out of the way.
Gracie uses good head movement to avoid the hook from Johnson.
Gracie throws a big counter combination but Johnson scrambles out of danger and avoids any damage.
Johnson looks to land a right hand but Gracie moved out of range.

Gracie tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Johnson defends well and Gracie ends up having to push Johnson into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch.

Johnson tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Gracie was well out of range. Poor timing from Johnson.

Johnson gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.
Johnson is looking to stand back up... there's a bit of a scramble and Gracie dives into side control.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Johnson is looking for a sweep.

Gracie stands up and beckons Johnson to his feet.

Gracie fails with the takedown
and Johnson counters with a nice body shot.
Gracie keeping at a good range here, avoiding a leg kick.
Gracie drops his hands momentarily and Johnson takes advantage with a crisp shot to the head.

Gracie looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Royce Gracie. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Johnson tries to sprawl but Gracie drives through with a takedown into half guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Gracie decides to stand up and try his luck on the feet.
Johnson throws a wild combination but nothing lands.
Gracie appears to be looking for a big counter.
Gracie needs to keep his hands up - Johnson had a free shot at his head there.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Johnson tests Gracie's chin there with a solid looking shot.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Riley Johnson showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! This is the final round!


Johnson throws a hook to the side of Gracie's head but Gracie sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully.
Gracie throws a big counter combination but Johnson scrambles out of danger and avoids any damage.
Riley Johnson seems to be getting the better of the standup.
Gracie doesn't succeed with the takedown

Gracie shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Johnson defends it nicely.
A little jabbing left from Johnson on the counter but it doesn't find it's target.

Gracie darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.
Royce Gracie has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Riley Johnson is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.

Johnson is trying to control but Gracie manages to pass to mount!
Johnson tries to improve his position but instead Gracie has taken his back!
Gracie is looking cool and calm here, just waiting for a good opportunity to attack and finish the fight from this dominant position.

Johnson tries to escape but Gracie has the hooks in and won't let him break free.

Gracie is working on the RNC. He looks like he's got it but Johnson won't tap... Oh, he's out! The ref rips Gracie off his unconscious opponent!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:42 of round 3, we have a winner by way of Submission (RNC). Royce Gracie!
During a confident post fight interview, Royce Gracie thanked all his fans. He seemed very genuine when describing how motivated his fans keep him.
